It's a national day of commemoration.
It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

I listened to And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda by The Pogues like I do every every Anzac Day. The number of Aussies doing the Gallipoli vigil seemed bigger than ever this year too.
