Robotulism, Ewok's Groupie, and I got our tickets this morning!
Had a bit of a scare when Botch and I were 5th in line at the Fillmore box office (since 9:30am) and were told it'd sold out... But we grabbed them when they went up on Live Nation later in the day.

Had to make sure the finances were in place to buy a couple tickets. Medical bills + family emergency airplane flights + 2 funerals & burials in 2 years + rising gas prices = tighter belts. :\

I'll have my camera and a new bigger memory card I got for this purpose, so if I can focus through my excitement enough to do so, I'll take some pictures and try to video a song or two. Me, Bot, Way, and EG should be right up front :D
Ryan's blog today made me really happy and excited... he sounds so genuinely pumped to be getting back on the road, trying new jams out, rocking some crazy shoes... His last show at the Fillmore was a great one and he turned out that fantastic "Welcome to the City" improv song about SF. Hopefully we'll get another fantastic show. Start of a new tour, new album, Saturday night in SF, GA venue with an awesome rock history feeling to it... I'm feeling really optimistic.

Yeah, I know sometimes they didn't announce live-streams until fairly last minute due to the possibility of technical problems or whatever... Crossing fingers here~ the 1st show of a tour would be a huge treat to hear after the lapse!

sorry I'm being lame and need to get to bed so I'm just reposting what I just wrote over on the other board:
I agree, the Wonderwall was divine... really intense... and Sweet Lil' Gal came damn close to ripping my heart out. That was the best I heard Ryan's vocals all night. It seemed like Ryan might dive into another solo tune on the piano after Sweet Lil' Gal, then he turned around to one of the stage guys and said "have you seen my friends?" in a sorta sad, cute voice, then turned back to the piano and started the little improv song about how he wishes his friends the cardinals would come back. That's when the band came back for Nightbirds.
The new song that I also thought was called "Go Easy" was dedicated to 'Bug' 'who is also playing a show tonight' (like foggy mentioned). I'm no good at describing songs so I can't try to relay what it sounded like... But I really, really liked it. Chorus had a line about "go easy on yourself."
The Danzig banter was mostly about a Danzig show he went to, and how there were 'ladies of the night' dancing topless on stage, and the funniest part was watching them try to pole dance to Danzig. Then he was commenting that their album title Lucifudge wasn't very badass and sounded chocolatey, or like sex candy.
Easy Plateau was intense... Went pretty spaced out in the middle, with Ryan screaming over and over into the mic "I want an easy plateau." For whatever reason it made me sad, it was just this very intense/begging scream "I want an easy plateau!" over and over... then went all the noise and reverb shut off and it quietly eased back into Easy Plateau.
Elizabeth was gorgeous but seemed slightly faster/more upbeat than I recall hearing it much (not that upbeat is ever a good word to capture that song).
I could not stop dancing when Shakedown came on.
Pearls was awesome too - more rocked out, really different from the album or the Letterman performance. In fact, there wasn't an acoustic guitar played all night as far as I could tell. There were two organs on stage but sadly those didn't get touched.
When some people started shouting song requests, Ryan politely told them it'd make no difference since they have a setlist and that he likes to go on the fly (paraphrasing here) so it makes for a better vibe... Then he said something like if you don't like the setlist, why don't you go make your own band. He completely seemed in a great mood all night, he and the boys were sharing smiles and laughs on stage (Brad's faces while Ryan's talking or tinkering with his guitar between songs are great), I caught Spacewolf jokingly petting Neal's hair... Ryan made a poke at Neal for being cool for his guitar-playing stance and did a hilarious imitation of it... Ah, and a personal highlight was when Ryan was tuning his guitar and said he wished he just had a saxophone, because then he wouldn't have to tune it, he could just jam. And that the show was brought to us by cheez-its and diet coke, and someone should tell those companies to give him a million dollars so he can build a helicopter out of unicorn feathers.
For what it's worth, the only "--->" I noted on my setlist was Peaceful Valley --> Beatiful Sorta.
Can you tell I'm still on a giddy post-show high and need to come off it before I can try to sleep? (being on here isn't helping)
La Cienega
08-24-2008, 07:49 AM
I took videos of Wonderwall (it was awesome), half of Why Do They Leave (batteries died)... then Bot's camera came to the rescue and I stuck my memory card in there and got videos (some might be partial, I can't remember) Like Yesterday, Games, Evergreen, and Cobwebs. No idea yet how the videos came out or how the audio is. I hope I'm not getting anyone's hopes up for nothing!
What that setlist called Windowpane was on either the blog or youtube as "Like Yesterday," back in the post-JJ days around when Evergreen, Broken Arrow, and Cobwebs all went up too.
Several rad new t-shirts at the merch table (mostly Cardinology or space themes), as well as some old designs - me and Way got 29 ones. One had some constellations on it, a bright blue one with the new peace sign/cardinal symbol, another was black with what looked like a heart monitor line across the front that formed the cold rose on one side. I also saw stickers and a few CD's, that was it.

The show was awesome. A few new songs - all of which sounded great. Very Cardinals-ish (of course). All very catchy and in the same vein as "Easy Tiger" (don't groan) and even a little "Cold Roses" sounding. I liked them all. Ry's voice was in top shape, as was Neal's. Spacewolf was looking especially sexy. Ryan was in a great mood and talked to the audience a bit - mostly about Danzig and Christopher Cross meeting in imaginationland.
That is as much of a show review as I can give in short form.

Why is it funny? A 30 song set with new material is pretty good.
Because outside of the 5 new songs, the set is no different that what they have been playing the last 2 years. And with the amount of complaining over the past few years, the addition of 5 new songs upgrade it to a great set. I find that funny.
I think its a great set. That being said, I haven't been complaining about how boring the sets have been the past few years.

New songs will always dramatically increase people's interest. I'm sure by the end of the tour we'll be complaining again.

I agree and I've been complaining but I've had a change of heart after listening again to the shows from January and I think it's a good set.
Using the blog to have pictures from the set is a great idea. It would be nice if they did a live setlist on the blog.

So from the shows I've been to and the live ones I have from various sources, I can say, probably yet again, that I don't get the complaining. I burned a cdr of Rescue Blues live from a variety of venues, backup bands, years, and every one of them sounds different. I've been listening to that song-- and a lot of the others-- for years and years, and I have yet to get tired of any of them. Maybe that just means I'm weird, but I could repeat that with a truckload of other RA songs and get the same result--they sound different almost every time-- and never get bored with any of them. That said,
I think some of the 07 shows toward the end of that tour started to sound like the band were getting tired (not surprising). But I also thought the Jan 08 shows sounded really good again. Good to hear new songs, of course.

I know, haha, Ryan Adams has been to Utah twice and the last time I didn't get to fucking see him, so I would never fucking complain about what the guy plays. In fact, I wouldnt want to dictate it to him, I'd wanna be there for his journey and the Cardinals journey. I dont see myself getting off his train any soon, especially since I just discovered Suicide Handbook and 48 Hours (I know, how could I miss them?).
Let's just say these are the holy grail.
But complaining about a 3 hour set?! You should be fucked by your own grandma and flogged in public! Theres only like 4 bands who would dare play a show on their own with no opener anymore, and then the list thins when you're talking bands who would play a 3 hour set. My Morning Jacket would. Radiohead goes about 2 hr 40.
So I'm not saying that you should shut up if you complain, but seriously when Ryan, Neal, Chris, Jon, and Brad come back after 7 months and play 5 new songs, and a 3 hour show and kick ass their first date back, you should really consider yourself an occupation with pitchforkmedia.

i know man, I'm listening to Cry on Demand for the first time and lets just say epic. Cracks in a Photograph was amazing as well, shame on Lost Highway for not releasing this.
Is it just me or should Lost Highway seriously just let Ryan run the show? It seems like almost every good album he made was rejected by the label at first.

I 100% believe 48 should have been the follow-up to Gold, as was originally planned.
And I highly doubt LH would turn down 48 hours. That album is right up their alley.
I bet is has more to do with Ryan wanting to change it up, rather than stick with one thing.
...which in this case, he should have done.

Well, this thread is all talking about something else entirely now, but anyway. Uh, I gave Ryan a present and he talked to me a bit.
The story:
Well, um, I met him in January of this year, during that west coast tour. And we talked about the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab remaster of Heartbreaker. He said he liked the MFSL stuff because the cds sound like vinyl. So, I tracked down the vinyl remaster of Sonic Youth's Goo that MFSL did in 1990. I believe it was in a limited release of 1000.
Anyway, that took forever to find a sealed one that I would not have to give up my first born for, because, I mean, I love Ryan and all, but, I was not going to go super crazy when he probably would not even be that appreciative of it.
Anyway, so I finally got it, and just in time, Went to the city with the gals, and then we were scrambling to find wrapping paper. We settled for a poster with a wizard and dragons on it, which actually looked pretty rad. Wrapped it, I made a card and drew a robot and we went to stand on the street outside the Fillmore.
Ryan and the guys passed by, and the other Cardinals returned, but Ryan was gone for a while. When he came back, I crossed the sidewalk so that I would be on the side that he was on, and kinda shoved the gift in his chest when he walked by and told him to take it, as it was for him. He answered, "Aww, I didn't get you anything" and I told him I really didn't expect that he would.
Anyway, so he was walking back into the venue, and he yelled back some sort of "Hey, thanks" or something. Wait, I don't remember very well after this, I think I had some sort of stroke. Girls, what did he say after that?!?!
Why did you have to shove it in his chest?
robotulism
08-26-2008, 01:28 PM
He was in a group of people talking in a line, and he was purposely trying not to see us before, I think. He definitely ignored us during his first passing.

08-26-2008, 01:29 PM
After she gave him the gift, she came back over and sat by us, as he walked away. He was reading the card, and then stopped and turned around to look for her and said "Hey! Thanks!" and she yelled "Open it!!" and he said "I read the card, I am pretty sure I know what this is!" and she said "Open it anyhow!" and he looked lovingly (I mean it, I am pretty sure he loved the hell out of that wrapping) and said "But I don't want to ruin the wrapping paper", and she said "Its a poster" and he yelled "Oh WOW!" and said he'd open it later or something like that. Then he went inside :) Thats how I remember it. It was kick ass. Bootch rules.

yup, the Wonderwall and Why Do They Leave (sadly cut - my batteries died) are ones I took. I'm uploading vids of three of the new songs right now! I had quite the drama and thought I'd fucked up and lost the videos... When my batteries died, Bot (yay Bot!) lent me her camera and I put my memory card in there and got videos of Like Yesterday, Cobwebs, Ever-Green, Games, and maybe some banter, and a bit of Kiss Before I Go... But after trying four friends' computers + 2 Walgreens + one internet cafe + one camera store yesterday afternoon I was convinced I couldn't get those videos off, or maybe had never recorded them in the first place 'cause I was unfamiliar with her camera. I think my memory card is disgruntled/corrupted too.
Good news is I found a camera store this morning that pulled them off and burned them to DVD for me! So there'll be videos of the last 3 new songs soon... Stupidly I dialed a friend so he could hear the first 2 new songs so I don't have videos of them... I wonder if he saved the voicemails...

Went to the show & liked it. Didn't love it but maybe was just tired. (The week before showtime my household was crowded with houseguests; I was & am dealing with estate stuff after a relative's passing including some family dramaz.) Ryan's voice was in good form & it was fun to get a glimpse into his universe. Arrived after the doors opened, left before 1AM 'cause I went with my cousin and she was ready to depart back to bed at her apartment then.
Ladies -- groupies? -- hope you all had a fantabulotastic partyriffic 23rd. I think I may have heard some of you folks over the rest of the crowd. :D

These girls were a class act. Before the show even started, security came over to talk to them b/c they'd already gotten a complaint. I never saw them in line, so they must've just shoved/stumbled their drunk selves up to the front.
it was terrible. When other people cheered at the opening notes of a song or when it ended, these chicks were screaming like they were having orgasms. I seriously thought to myself several times "I'm glad ryan's going deaf and probably can't hear them"
