If he wasn't the headliner on Thursday, but on Friday or Sat, I would have so gone..bummer though. I have some friends going, so maybe they'll at least snag some pics!

I had a ticket bought for me for this event, and thought I couldn't go....maybe I can/ should if the ticket is still out there. EEKS this is very close now... Somehow I see Ryan bailing out though.... ??????

Maven
06-15-2008, 03:15 PM
That would be lame if Ryan bailed out on this. He's the headliner that night and I'm sure lots of folks bought tix for this just to see him and the Cards. I think he could get into some legal trouble with the festival if he bails at this point, unless he had some really good excuse (like he did for the Cowboy Junkies gig supposedly).

Faded Rose
06-15-2008, 03:19 PM
I hope he turns up for all the folks who've paid to see him but it's a known fact he doesn't really like festivals and this is not connected to a tour in any way. Presumably the band would have been rehearsing but there's been no news of any kind that I can find - only pictures of him with miserable Mandy (I have never seen a girl look so miserable when she's out with a chap she's supposed to fancy). Could be a convenient illness on the horizon but I do hope not - besides I'd like to see what songs he decides to sing. Hopefully not the same old same old he was churning out last year on tour.

Maven

I dunno. I heard it was just RAA that Ryan gave "shout-outs" too. Makes me sad, as I think that board's rather boring. Too many folks being so careful in what they say -- it's pretty obvious.

What's so wrong with ths setlist? I would be very, very, very happy to see Ryan perform that set!

Of course, I've only been fortunate enough to have seen one of his shows so far, so perhaps I'm a little too parched when it comes to his concerts to be a good judge.

Sunny44
06-20-2008, 09:31 AM
I wouldn't mind something different, but I know from the January shows that I'd still be happy to hear this setlist because I still love how he sounds, and I still love those songs.
(well, any of his songs). It'll be interesting to see if the Oasis openers are the same. Somewhat of a different audience.

There are reports that the Cards were tighter than ever.

Seems as if they don't have much room to get even tighter.

Tim Simmons
06-20-2008, 10:12 AM
I'll take 30 tunes played tightly cycled through a tour than 60 tunes played between varying degrees of sloppy and tight.

Seeing as I am only seeing one show per tour, what difference does it make.

I think going into a show knowing exactly what is going to be played is a little bit boring. It would be nice to go expecting a chance of surprise.

But that is partly our fault for following setlists online.

Faded Rose
06-20-2008, 11:00 AM
I'm with Rob on this. If you're actually at the show I guess it's OK but he's been playing this setlist with a few variations for a very long time now (I think we could go back to 06). He could do it in his sleep. It's not as if he doesn't have any other tunes. It smells to me a bit like complacency. There's not much effort required to keep bringing out the same old setlist. And hey, I agree with Rob again, I can't believe the Cards can get any tighter - are folks saying that cos there's nothing else to say.

Rob

And hey, I agree with Rob again, I can't believe the Cards can get any tighter - are folks saying that cos there's nothing else to say.

I'm with ya, Timmy. Really, what can you tell about the vibe and energy of a show just by reading the set-list? Absolutely nothing!

Plus, the environment created by the venue and the people there really has a lot to do with how enjoyable a show is. In Dallas a couple of years ago, I suspect most of you would have considered the set list really amazing - "edgy", "rockin'". However, due to the general douchbaggery associated with most Dallas crowds, the show ended up being sort of a drag and Ryan was completely pissy.

Last summer in Austin the set list was what some of you here have been calling "boring", "same old", and "safe". But, I gotta tell you, that well go down as one of the best concert experiences of my life. A few weeks later in MPLS, similar set lest, very disappointing show.

I guess my point is, that it's sort of ridiculous to sit here and play arm-chair quarterback for a show that none of us attended. Really, we know nothing about the quality of the show from that little list of words.

littleamen
06-20-2008, 11:15 AM
In fact I'd like it if they loosened up a bit - got more edgy and less predictable.

I don't - but I'm tired of his churning out the same old songs show after show. That's my opinion is all. Just from listening to his live shows I can't say that I'd noticed the vibe and energy being that much different from show to show. His mood can be different but that doesn't always affect the production of the tunes. You can only do so much with the same song surely?

If you love it that's fine by me.

First, I didn't say I loved it. What I am saying (or trying to, at least) that there's a lot from a show that is lost in translation when listening to a recording or reading a set list. We all know there's a lot about a music experience that isn't necessarily cognitive.

I totally get that you don't want to listen to the boots from all of these shows (at least I don't) and the recordings probably sound pretty similar. What I was trying to get across is that 2 shows that have a similar set list and probably sound pretty much the same on a recording can be vastly different when you're actually there. So, for us to sit here and say all of these shows must be boring is probably a bit of a stretch.

La Cienega
06-20-2008, 12:41 PM
I think it's understandable if for a festival crowd (read: mostly not huge cardinals fans) they didn't want to go experimenting around with new songs or new old songs that aren't super well-rehearsed. But if that's what they were thinking, my fear is they'll go with the same philosophy when playing for Oasis crowds. Then why would they bother working on anything new for Boston and SF, if those are really the only two straight-Cardinals shows on tap this year.

Not that I'm not trying my hardest to get to the SF and Boston shows, but I am not going to hold my breath for wild setlist variations, that's all.

ewok.online
06-20-2008, 12:44 PM
I'm gonna go listen to 7-21 Santa Cruz from last year. Maybe then I'll feel better.

Faded Rose
06-20-2008, 12:47 PM
And surely even if we only go to one show per tour (and I only manage that at best) we don't want to hear virtually the same set list as we heard at the last show. It doesn't have to be radically different (although that would be nice) but just mix it up a bit and OK I confess, I think I'm getting a bit bored with the Cards stull.

littleamen
06-20-2008, 12:57 PM
And there's the catch with Ryan allowing all of his shows to be taped and so many people following so closely... :\

While it seems like a great service, it's also easy to get bored pretty quickly.

Rob
06-20-2008, 12:59 PM
I think it is absolutely impossible to please fans who follow every set.

Doesn't mean I won't complain. :)

taparoo
06-20-2008, 02:07 PM
Wow, I also don't get the bitching about the sets. It's not like they keep playing songs that most of the 'fan community' think sucks - most of these are solid tunes. And I'm fine if he keeps playing them. Like Tim mentioned, most people only see one show when he comes around, so I don't see the point in bitching about repetitive set lists that can still rock the flesh right off your face.

TELLURIDE, Colo. -- On several occasions during the first day at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival on Thursday (June 19), I saw this odd-looking fellow walking around. He looked content to be there, and considering the laidback vibe of this festival for the last 35 years, very few people probably noticed him, besides me and the excited girl in the snowboarding shop. He was wearing a colorful Black Sabbath T-shirt, chunky black spectacles and hair that stuck out like an over-brushed Barbie doll. My jaw dropped when it turned out to be Ryan Adams, rocking a new look, not to mention the big stage at the foot of the San Juan Mountains later that night.

Yes, you read that right -- the rock 'n' roll bad boy was headlining a very famous bluegrass festival, but it's easy to see why he accepted the invitation. (Adams praised the beauty of the state as soon as he walked on stage. At the time, I had my camera pointed at one of his bandmates, thinking to myself, "Wow, Ryan looks good in that hat.") I can see why musicians love it here, because the stage looks straight out on a mountain range. Plus, there are no other stages in the park, so they have the crowd's full attention. Unlike other music festivals, there is no constant wandering. You plant yourself wherever there's enough room for a tarp and make a day of it. What took me so long to finally get here?

Nashville singer-songwriter Darrell Scott opened the festival with a solo acoustic set featuring several new songs, as well as reliable standbys like "With a Memory Like Mine" and "It's a Great Day to Be Alive" (which Travis Tritt turned into a hit). One of his traditional country songs about drinking and cheating, "Too Close to Comfort," suddenly made me wish Patty Loveless was playing the festival, too, but no such luck. Two up-and-coming bluegrass bands, Cadillac Sky and Uncle Earl, constantly told the audience how overwhelmed, honored and grateful they were to receive an invitation to perform at Telluride this year. Teenage mandolin picker Sarah Jarocz, former teen prodigy Chris Thile and a few songwriters also played way off to the side of the stage during the transitions, keeping the afternoon moving right along.

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie, who talks as much as he sings, made his first appearance at the festival this year as well. His earnest rendition of "Nobody Seems to Care These Days When a Soldier Makes It Home" prompted the guy behind me to say, "Whoa. That's heavy." And it was. On the lighter side of things, I saw a guy leap to his feet at the opening notes of the Del McCoury Band. "I'm dancing! Who's dancing?" he asked, before dashing off to the mosh pit up front. Watching the esteemed, clean-cut bluegrass band through the eyes of certain members of this audience (that is to say, fans of jam bands) shed a whole new light on the McCourys' musical appeal. In other words, when the band hits its mark, which is pretty much always, it really does feel good to shuffle around in circles. The moment he asked for requests, somebody hollered out for "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" -- my kind of crowd. His repertoire is simply astonishing. After being in the music biz for 50 years, McCoury can still play just about any song you shout out.

Since I don't know much about Ani DiFranco, I strolled through the festival to scrounge up a dinner of Asian dumplings and chilled edamame. I liked hearing DiFranco's music in the background, though, since she opted for a laid back, acoustic approach and told quite a few stories about herself. With a satisfied stomach, I investigated the vendors on the other side of the field, which mostly offered organic clothing. So far, I have only acquired a big water bottle from local radio station KOTO, a free pair of wool socks from Point 6, a tiny Clif Bar and a few beer cups that we're encouraged to reuse all weekend. Volunteers are scattered across the park to help you decide whether that trash in your hand is really trash or whether it could be separated into the compost bin or recycle bin.

I have never heard the word "sustainable" so much in my life, and I am duly impressed by the efforts of the festival to reduce the carbon footprint of such a massive undertaking. There are no bottles of water. Instead, you refill your own container with fresh mountain water as often as you want -- at no charge. And I have been drinking lots of water, to help me adjust to the high altitude. Back in Nashville, I run three or four days a week. Here, I was out of breath just walking from our lodge to the gondola station. But I will be grateful to a friendly "festivarian" for guiding me to the box office once I got off the gondola from Mountain Village and, more importantly, leading us to the fresh muffins and croissants at the well-known eatery, Baked in Telluride.

At the end of a long first day, I wish Ryan Adams had chosen an acoustic approach with his band, the Cardinals, because I still personally enjoy the vibe of early records like Stranger's Almanac (from Whiskeytown days), Heartbreaker and Gold. Hardly a week goes by that I don't listen to his music. However, I like a lot of stuff from Cold Roses as well, so not all was lost. If only I had recognized him earlier in the day, maybe he would have taken requests, too.

The Telluride Bluegrass Festival continues through Sunday (June 22) with a lineup that includes Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bιla Fleck, the Frames, Leftover Salmon, Tift Merritt, Punch Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, String Cheese Incident and the Swell Season.

I actually would have really loved to have been there yesterday. Darrell Scott is amazing and love uncle earl as well. Need I mention that I sorta dig that Ryan Adams guy too?

Speaking of Darrell Scott, he may be a brilliant song writer, but the poor man is in desperate need of a stylist. This photo I snapped during his set at Hayes Carll's Stingaree festival earlier this spring. MC Hammer called and he wants his britches back.

Oh, Ryan. Please change the setlist somewhat for any late summer/fall shows. This one was a fantastic group of songs to do, but from tour to tour the fans like to hear different songs.

Found this:

So I hung out with Ryan Adams today.

So we're out in telluride, CO for the Bluegrass festival - today we were super excited because Ryan and the Cardinals were playing. We got there at about 12, and were just hanging out for a while. My husband had gone to wander around, when fucking Ryan Adams comes and sits on the tarp next to ours. I am freaking out but of course, trying to look cool. The husband comes back and introduces us to Ryan, and then we leave him alone. Well, the people who's tarp he was on come back, so he asks if he can sit with us. He hung out with us for over TWO HOURS. He was the nicest fucking guy ever.

He was making up the set list and says that he likes to keep things pretty open, because you never know who you'll meet before the show or whatever. Later, my husband mentioned that his cover of Wonderwall was the our first dance at our wedding. Now, I'm not saying the two are related, but he did play Wonderwall. So, we're secretly hoping it was for us.

Here's Ryan and me:

Oh, and he is not dating Mandy Moore, or anyone else. He is on the prowl.

I can't believe this gal and her husband actually got around to discuss who Ryan was dating! I would never have the nerve to bring it up if I met him. I wonder if Ryan himself said he was "on the prowl."

It's odd how few thorough reviews there are of this show at ANY of the Ryan Boards. Maybe just coz people were so disappointed by same old songs? There was one interesting post at RAA, that said something about robots and Ryan reacting to that and that people cleared out when Ryan and the Cards played. WHAT?!?!

The last festival he did in the UK was the End of the Road (I think 2006 but I could be wrong) and I don't think there were a lot of people at that show either. I'm puzzled as to why he was playing this festival anyway. I understood he didn't like playing festivals. I know I've a downer on this set list but was it the right set list for this venue? I'm sorry but it was a tired old set list. Lucky this fan met him before the show and not after then.

This is the longest post I can find about the show, from RAA:

Re: 2008-06-19 Telluride - Setlist & Reviews

Lo and behold, someone found my wife's LJ and the photo I took of her and Ryan. Thanks for the "nice photo" comment, it really speaks to the power of my iPhone and my meager skill with a camera.

Ryan was extremely gracious with us and all the people that came up and asked for pictures with him. He couldn't have been more of a gentleman.

We talked about a lot of things: music/bands, books, his upcoming plans, and the generalities of the setlist. (I wanted to be surprised) I could go into furious detail about everything we talked about but then I'd be as bad as a Spin journalist (although I'd love to write for them in the future). The whole affair was so easy-going and he was engaging from the start.

I got tremendous insight into Ryan Adams the person during our whole exchange. Simply, he is a person deeply committed to his music/band and the life that music has created for him.

As for the show, it was exactly what I wanted out of my first Ryan show. (He never comes to Florida) It was messy at parts, confrontational, beautiful, jammy, straight-ahead, and LOUD.

Some of my favorite things about the show were the reactions from the crowd. The casual fans and the unbelievers seemed to be driven bonkers. There were a bunch of diehards remaining, but a large part of the crowd seemed to run away as if a whole ocean was about submerge a herd of cats.

The absolute caustic feedback mess that Easy Plateau devolved into was on par with Jerry Garcia shoving his whole guitar through an amp during a space. I loved it.

The twirlers couldn't follow the music. But those kids generally have the musical knowledge of a dingbat and not enough drugs compared to their parents' generation. (Back when 30 minutes of space was "an experience" and not filler)

He also dropped some F-bombs during the stage banter. That may have had an effect on the family-minded or just gave them an excuse to get the hell out.

To paraphrase some choice quotes from the best of my memory:

"Robots for sale? Did they really say that... W-T-Fucking-F. That means "What the Fucking Fuck." ...If you really have robots for sale then I want one."

(I met the kids who shouted "ROBOTS FOR SALE." It really took the lid off the stage banter and things got a little more jokey from that point on)

"I'm just not Fergilicious... ...Did you hear that she sent poop to someone in the mail. How is that possible?"

"I needed/had? my body aligned with unicorn feathers. Or Manticore feathers"

And other great lines.

Song by song it did not disappoint me. I loved just closing my eyes and letting it all wash over me.

I also loved watching my wife sing every lyric that she knew and she knew a bunch. (My memory is filled with sports stats and arcane knowledge about comic books so i kept my mouth shut mostly)

A lot of the post-show discussion I overheard concentrated on what Ryan didn't play. Some even went as far as singing whatever cut off of Gold that really got their rocks off in college. Or helped them get laid, whatever selfish pursuit it may have been.

The fucking people just DIDN'T GET IT.

Sorry that I don't have my picture with Ryan to post alongside this but it's on my wife's camera and she forgot the cord to help upload it. We won't be home for another week so that will be bothersome.

Please, if possible, someone find a recording of this show. I know it was recorded (the ROBOTS FOR SALE kids were recording but I didn't have a chance to ask for a copy) Some random strangers swore that Wonderwall was dedicated to my wife and me. Neither her or I heard said dedication because he got a little mumbly in the introduction. I would like confirmation either way.

Thanks for reading!

-Matt

Well, it was a BLUEGRASS festival and Ryan's music, while it still has a toe in Country, is a far cry from "Bluegrass." So I guess I can imagine why some folks in the crowd just up and left. From the lack of reviews of this show on any of the Ryan Boards, it seems not that many avid Ryan fans even made this Festival. Probably cost a bunch of money, and think of all those bands you'd have to sit through until Ryan hit the stage. Plus, festivals for me are icky coz of lack of intimate setting. I prefer seeing that musicians I like in clubs that hold no more than 300 people (like when he plays The Catalyst in Santa Cruz).

I liked it a lot. Including the Bartering Lines. Yeah there's some echo, the sound at the
open air venue isn't perfect for recording but I really liked the whole set. As for bartering lines, i think he's doing something like what dylan does, breaking open his old songs and trying to find a new way to do them. works sometimes, doesn't work other times and not everyone will like it, but i thought it was cool. is it the best show of his i've ever heard? obviously not. but i wouldn't have been disappointed if i'd been there, and i'm enjoying the recording.

I think, and this is just a hunch, that maybe Ryan's monitor had a slight delay on it so he sang everything slightly late. This has happened to me when I try and set up recording on my computer, it's called latency. I think this might be why Ryan's vocals sound a little off.

The vocals on this are very odd.
