no chance you could take a vacation day? or call in sick? nice thing about it being sunday is you could have the weekend in Madison and only have to take off or call in sick the one day. Bot's mom would be happy to give you the clap if you need a real illness to call in about ;)

I can't believe I'm still up. What a great show. Easily one of the best Ryan shows I've attended. Great setlist, long show, nice interplay between the band, Ryan's voice being top notch, all factors to a good night.

great show. he made fun of a guy for requesting some whiskeytown. that was funny.
was out back after the show and i got two more signatures for my poster from the minneapolis show last fall. i saw neal before the show getting coffee and mentioned i saw them at that show. he apologized for the ending. when brad signed the poster and saw when it was from, he mentioned something similar. when ryan saw it he talked about "that fuck face" paul westerberg and how they can never go back to minneapolis. that was funny, also.
the only negatives was some girl took my sharpie to get her donor card signed and wouldn't give it back as she asked ryan about whether this house is not for sale is a beetle juice reference so i missed getting spacewolf to sign it and driving back because i have class in an hour and a half.
It really didn't seem like they played 31 songs.
The only new song I didn't enjoy was "Like Yesterday". I think the rest sounded good, and I'm excited for the new album.

I'd agree, I haven't gotten as 'into' Like Yesterday at the shows I saw as i have some of the other newbies - I too think it was better on the blog, solo Ryan. But I stick by Sink Ships and Color of Pain being my least favorite of the new songs so far. Sink Ships after the 2nd chorus, I like, but the job application lyrics really irk me. Glad you enjoyed the show Rob! I'm assuming you were much happier than after that MKE show we saw last year?
Yeah, Ryan was in a much better mood. He didn't do much talking early on, but seemed to loosen up later. I still think it's weird that there is absolute silence in between songs (except for the shouters). You'd think there would be some random chatter in the audience. It may have been because I was so close to the stage, and the balconies were pretty far back in this venue.
La Cienega
10-06-2008, 10:46 AM
it probably wasn't just your seats... I think people who "know" ryan shows are a little in fear of making noise between songs even. I'll admit I'm in that boat. I'm afraid I'll either miss something since he is so quiet often with the banter, or I'm afraid if everyone starts talking, they won't stop and ryan will get upset. Not necessarily the way it should be, but maybe the way it is.
Seriously glad to hear you had a good show and are excited about the album, though. I was a little worried about you for a while there, Rob ;)

You were up close like me right Rob? I didn't even think about what was behind me while I was watching the show. I just thought the venue was a nice contrast to some of the old theaters that he usually plays. I love old ornate theaters, but this place had a very pleasant modern beauty.

No, sorry, did you have on the green jacket?

No jacket for me. I had on a plaid shirt.

You must have been one couple down.
The dancing guy was just enough to my left that he didn't bother me. I couldn't believe that guy. You have front row with a completely open view and you feel like to you need to stand and block peoples views. Then his buddy would stand and not move at all. Just stand. At least the bald dude was dancing. Hard to fault him for that.
I like the fact that Ryan shows are very chill. I like to sit and really listen and watch. Everyone sitting just cuts down on all the crowd bullshit that happens at most shows.

Yeah I was 5th row a little left of center.
I think it's a great venue. It just didn't feel like I was at a rock show.
I think I saw you, Rob. We were 3rd row. First 2 seats on the left. I was gonna come say howdy after the show, but frankly, I had to pee so I didn't linger too long. :lol

OMG, he was cracking me up. Why is it that the people that dance the most seem to have the least rhythm?

I was out of there pretty quick too..I was starving since I didn't eat dinner before it.

It was amazing how he would dance the same whether it was a fast or slow song.
He can play a mean air guitar though.

:lol His drums were pretty stellar too. I seriously think I caught the band laughing at him a couple of times.

the only negatives was some girl took my sharpie to get her donor card signed and wouldn't give it back as she asked ryan about whether this house is not for sale is a beetle juice reference so i missed getting spacewolf to sign it and driving back because i have class in an hour and a half.
Ryan has your sharpie! I think after that girl took it, then some guy had it, because I asked him to borrow it, and he said it wasn't his, and nobody knew whose it was, so everyone was using it, and when Ryan was done signing everything he was trying to figure out who it belonged to, so we were like, "nobody knows, now its yours" and he put it in his pocket. What is up with the whole donor card thing anyway? Do some states have you carry a seperate card? In MN it is just on your driver's license, so I thought Ryan was totally signing her driver's license. Why didn't she just have a ticket for him to sign like everyone else? Then again, she also talked about another time after a show when she was really drunk and talking to Jon, and kept calling him the keyboard player.
Show was super-excellent!!
Bcart, yourpictures are so great! The Nazi security DID pounce on me, practically ripped my camera out of my hands right at the first song, so I never got any pictures. It was mostly my fault though, as I was a little chemically imbalanced at that point and totally did not even notice that security were in the venue in addition to the ones out in the lobby.

Here's my sweetly condensed Madison story. My boyfriend had to hear the 8 hour version... I don't want to type that much;)
I left home later than planned and not in the best of moods despite my excitement~ the day just had not been coming up roses thus far. Got to Madison and wandered around State St. ~ there I found an awesome window display that just screamed one of a member of another board. Simple things can be huge pick-me-ups and this lifted my spirits. My friend and I went for a couple drinks, then some food (very cool city!!!)
Talked to a a board friend on my friends phone being I no longer have a cell~ planned to talk later to arrange a meeting spot at the venue. Close to doors open time, so started walking towards the venue. Saw the most amazing Ryan Adams look-alike of all time: I was mind-blown... especially when I saw this guy even took it as far as to have the same boots. When I saw Spacewolf walking next to this look-alike my knees went to jelly and I fell against a streetlight, fully realizing how wrong I was about the look-alike factor. I turned around and cought up with them~ chatted briefly, got hugs, the promise of a good show, then I let them be on their way. Cloud MF 9, lemme tell ya!
A moment of panic when the ushers told me there was a problem with my ticket (felt my nightmare coming true.) My seat had been where the soundboard needed to be, but it all worked out good~ I got moved forward rather than back. I figure no kid has ever been as excited on Christmas as I was~ the day had turned from bad to simply amazing already.
The show... holy firecrackers Batman!!! So exciting to see the harmonica come out again!!! And Go Easy~ I hadn't heard that one yet, and I fell in love with it very quickly! Other highlites were Kiss B4 I Go, Off Broadway, Peacefull Valley, Wonderwall, G'nite Rose (cuz that is my song my son sings with me when he doesn't want to go to sleep and he knows how to prolong bedtime with that), etc... oh and Shakedown whooo!!!!
Ryan totally got the WT shouter to be quiet for the remainder of the show when he lit into the guy, then said he wasn't trying to be a prick~ wanted to play for all the openminded people who'd come~ then said OK, maybe just a little bit of a prick... a very firm and solid lecture, but funny too. There was also a little chatter about how usually they do a Brittany Fox sorta theme; pink coats, sport shorts, long socks~ then Neal jumped in and added glowsticks to the list. Ryan said Neal won that one. The boys all seemed to be enjoying themselves... very good energy and spirit going on. I cried; I smiled. Beauty and joy just does that... And so blessed to have the show go over like it did... could have never asked for more!!!!
Ran into a couple peeps from my home town outside, so we met up with my friend and went out for a couple drinks. They left, my friend and I did shortly later to end the night. He and I had just gotten out there and he heard a familiar voice, looked back and said, they're behind us. I opted to ignore and not be an annoying fan-girl: once is enough. Then Ryan called out "We're following you; we're gonna steal your wallets.) Can't ignore that~ I told him he wouldn't get much cuz I spent most of my money at his show. Anyways, we stood there talking a bit, then they asked us to walk with them. My friend and Brad pulled up a bit ahead and Ryan and I just totally shot the shit about all kinds of things. My friend told me later that we seemed like old friends who have known each other forever. I wish we had had more time... I could have talked forever. We went back to the waiting bus, stood and chatted out there a little more. Ryan compared his feet with mine~ I explained sandals with socks is a fashion-no, but it was all about needing height, yada yada ya... Anyways, they posed for a couple pics with me, offered handshakes and hugs, wishes for safety and whatnot, then they got in the bus and my friend and I started walking.
A couple blocks away, the buses drove past us. Ryan was sitting behind the driver waving to us from the window...
Beautiful.....
Thank you Cards!!!

I thought littleamen and I had the perfect experience, but yours tops it wings! I'm an idiot when I talk to people I admire though so it's probably for the best we didn't run into them. Did this happen on State St. or where? The hotel we stayed in seemed so the Cardinals's style (plus it was right next to the Cardinal Bar!) that I really hoped we be sleeping under the same roof, but it wasn't the case. Regardless, I feel sooo lucky to have seen that show.

Thanks again twisted. I didn't think they were going to turn out very good. I had the perfect gap through the crowd in order to get Ryan though. No matter how hard I tried I could not take a single pic of Spacewolf in focus. Drove me crazy.
