what will this mean for his fans? Let a poll show us the way.

I'm not sure. It'll probably make him more concentrated but whether that's what's best for his music who know? It could be that the best stuff he's done has just sort of happened rather than being "planned".
I'll plump for the less erratic one though.

Yea, I guess it comes down to whether or not you believe that the booze etc somehow contributed to his ability and his approach to songwriting. I've had this discussion with plenty of people who think exactly that, but I'm not so sure.
You can either write songs or you can't, and he certainly can. I think being sober can only help his concentration and focus and that's got to be a good thing.
Assuming he stays on the wagon.

I chose less prolific, but only because it included the words jesus and yoga. Damn, I just noticed the choice above it "find yoga, macrobiotic food, and Jesus". Jesus, yoga, and macrobiotic food - ding ding ding! That's the one.

Well, your performance in this poll has been disappointing to say the least.

That is your fault. The thought of Ryan eating macrobiotic food, doing yoga, and reading the Bible before bed is just too good. I'm almost willing it to happen.

according to an interview a read of him in rolling stone right around when cold roses came out, he said that certain "substances" help him in song writing. I think that he just writes different songs when he is under some influence. Cold Roses definitly has a different sound than any other ryan album...and maybe it contributed to that
in his "grizzly" days

tempted by the "find yoga, macrobiotic food and Jesus" choice...
But I had to go with "make the shows duller"
While I do agree the gigs will probably be less erratic and better quality as a general rule, that does not make for a truely interesting show, where you have absolutely no idea what will happen next. The highest possible high or a totally train-wreck.
That's my prediction, anyway. But this all assumes he STAYS off the sauce. Which seems like a pretty big if to me.

This is probably relevant again in the light of Easy Tiger and the greater role of the Cardinals.

makes the shows duller, no one can argue otherwise.
but if making it a bit duller means coherent playing and singing and less meltdowns then it cant really be a bad thing completely can it?!

If he's managed to stay off the drugs and alcohol during his break-up with Jessica Joffe, and subsequent nervous breakdown, I'm sure he'll be able stay off it for good.
I think a sober Ryan is a better Ryan, and it'll only help his performance and his writing.
Too bad he wasn't a sex addict. :lol

Yeah, but he quit cold turkey, so thank god he wasn't a sex addict, you mean.

This topic has always bothered me for some reason - mainly because I'm selfish about it. It is generally amazing when someone is able to overcome addiction like that and then here I am bitching about his shows not being as exciting and his albums being to clean.
I guess I just need to appreciate the fact that he's still alive..

I think we'll have to wait a while to know for sure. We've only had one album now where he's been sober, and sure, it may not have been great...but there have been sub-par Ryan albums in the past as well. And from what I've heard (and what little I've seen on Youtube) his live shows have become more solid, and more consistent. I can't see how that's worse than before...
