View Full Version : Cold Roses - Too much filler???

Sydneyfan

Lets argue about the perennial question - Does Cold Roses have too much filler or not?

Rob

You can vote both yes and no? :)

The problem I see is the definition of filler.

Nix
08-21-2006, 04:32 PM
I think that filler is defined as anything not by The Adams.

:boohoo This is shaping up to be my most successful poll ever.

Everyone just vote for one or the other. Thanks.

I'd say there are only 2 or 3 songs that I would have wanted him to leave off the album.

When I first listened to it I would have said yes because of most of the 1st side, but now I love it all.

Rosebud and Blossom are the first two I would get rid of as well. When Will You Come Back Home would be negotiable. I think its pretty naff lyrically, but the melody is okay.
There are a couple more I'd axe as well - need to give it some thought.

I love Rosebud and When Will You Come Back Home as they play them live, so it's tough.

And Tonight should have been on a different album (and yes I know it is a bonus track)

Pretty happy with the album on the whole thanks. Least favourite at the moment is probably Meadowlake St, just because of that U2y sounding build up bit. Tonight is kind of throw away as Nix pointed out but I'm not counting bonuses.

I've always loved the entirety of CR. Tonight is a bit wasted stuck on the end as it ruins the whole feeling of 'Friends'. 'Blossom' has a really good verse melody but the chorus, excuse the language, is a bit shite. But I love them all, really. I'd axe not one of 'em off.

For those of you who think there is too much filler what double albums do you think work as a whole and don't have too much filler? Just curious.

blueone
08-27-2006, 04:03 AM
Are we talking vinyl double albumns or CD double albumns?

If it's CD double albumns then could we include vinyl triple or quadruple albumns?

foggy
08-27-2006, 12:57 PM
Yep, either vinyl or cd. As long as it's a proper album and not a compilation or something of that sort. I'm just curious if the people who think there's too much filler on CR simply prefer their albums short and concise, same sort of person who often prefers singles to albums.

I'm more of an album person myself. I love The Beatles White album start to finish, but I'm sure there's people who think it's filled with a lot of throwaway tracks. Not comparing The White album to Cold Roses, but you know what I mean.

blueone

I consider an entire albumn as a book. What silly bastard skips chapters in a book? So what, you're favourite character dies in a certain chapter? The book still goes on and what happens in a certain chapter effects the ambience of the entire book.

In albumn terms, try this one on for size;

Bob Dylan's biggest selling albumn ever was Desire. It has a song on it called 'Mozambique', which is by no means a really great song. It sits slightly above average. Now, if you skip that song and then get to the end of the albumn then the albumn won't feel complete. 'Mozambique' offers a certain exoticness to the albumn. Another chapter in the book, if you will.

I love CR and I would never axe a song off. Another great double albumn is CSN & Y's 4 Way Street. Half acoustic, half electric. But perhaps the best double record of all time is the Dead's Live/Dead. You axe a song off that then, boy, are you in deep trouble.

foggy
08-27-2006, 02:35 PM
Yes, exactly. I see it all the same way. Same feeling about Mozambique on Desire too. I think some people get locked into wanting all the songs to be strong enough to stand on their own otherwise they're throwaway. Whereas I feel that some songs form a bridge to the next song in the song cycle, remove it and the album loses some of it's heart, some of it's emotion. For me, CR is perfectly realized work. Throwing away songs like Rosebud (which also happens to be a top favorite of mine) and Blossom would absolutely destroy the feeling of the album. Sure, there are a lot of double albums that don't work at all, are disjointed and so forth, but CR isn't one of them, imo.

Sydneyfan
08-27-2006, 04:01 PM
OKay, I've given this some thought and realised that I may in fact just prefer shorter albums with fewer, stronger songs. I can't think of a double that I don't consider has too much filler in it. I could even name at least three songs off "The River" by Springsteen that should have stayed in the can.

So, while I appreciate "the album as book" metaphor, I don't think it works that way for me.

its a strong album the way it is, and theres only 2 or 3 songs i actually dislike. however, it could have been a true classic had ryan just picked the best 11 or 12 songs...but there we go.
personally im glad we got 19 songs or whatever it was coz im always happy to hear ryan songs, but i guess theres two ways of looking at it.

It is a perfect length for a double album. And this is coming from some one who thinks that almost all double albums are too long.

Is it true you could squeeze it onto a single CD if you were so inclined?

Breaking it up into two CDs improves the pacing multi-fold. Plus the gatefold packaging makes it the best Ryan Adams CD to roll a joint on. :)

Yeah, I knew it was a bonus track though the version I downloaded had it on there when I bought it. It's obvious that it is since it really doesn't blend in at the end after Friends.

If I skip tracks, it is only Rosebud and Blossom, but I know lots of people who swear by those. So, you know, I like the album completely.

And, yeah, my friend put both discs on one for me, which I enjoy very much. So, they fit.

For me, Cold Roses isn't complete without some of the tracks. I mean, sure, there are some songs that aren't brilliant, or could be classified as "filler" but without them it kinda takes away from the album's identity. For me, Cold Roses works best almost like atmosphere music. Some songs will grab you and be obviously brilliant while others simply work to forward where the album is heading. I'm sure that all sounds very vague and nebulous...but that's how I look at it.

my favorite RA record of all time (though it would be nice if a future album could replace it cause then it would mean he stepped up his game and is still making soul drenching and kick ass tunes), the album that completely turned me from a casual fan to an obsessed neurotic. there's like a neverending reserve of songs on here, and i find them all to be good, like seriously good. 29 is the other album i think comes second in perfection.
seriously, Cold Roses blew my mind with the lyrics, his voice and the killer slide guitar. it was spooky, romantic, heartbreaking, lonely and enjoyable. every phrasing in each sentence hit me on a personal level, while leaving me utterly confused that honest and gut wrenchng music was being made in 2005. seriously, i owe a lot to the album. definitely one of my favorite records of all time, right up there with blood on the tracks, marquee moon, and darkness on the edge of town.

this has to be one of my favorite albums of all time...the songs i do find myself skipping is blossom and rosebud, but have lately found some good in them...ill get some whiskey and put that cd on and i will have a good time...its just one of those rare moments when everything comes together so perfect IMO...if only Catherine and JP were still with the band...

i do too.

i don't mind the song, but if i'm actually listening to the album, rather than just having it on in the background, i skip that song.

but some people really love it, so i wouldn't take it off the album. i just don't really like the style of it, i don't really relate to the subject matter and i don't really like the grateful dead that much. but it's nice that he's made a tribute to a hero ('s guitar?) of his anyway. i'd have preferred a song about einstein or something, if it was going to be about a hero of ryan's.

actually, he's written some good songs about his idols. the anne frank one, and the judy garland one. are there any others?

I always skip Rosebud when I listen to Cold Roses. I can't seem to love it.

After hearing him perform Rosebud live back in 2005, it really elevated that songs appeal for me. It made me appreciate the recorded version more somehow.

There's a neat little story in the lyrics too.

A friend of mine told me that hearing Blossom for the first time practically brought him to tears. He has young children and it really made him think about them growing up and how no matter how much you love them, you don't really know and you can't really control what the future will bring them.

And now that I have a daughter, I can't help but be moved by Blossom now too...
