Was that good Woody Allen or the mediocre one? His last few films have been disappointing I think, but I haven't caught this one yet.

Last movie in theatre: You, Me and Dupree (not my choice). Awful - Owen Wilson's nose was the funniest thing in it.

On DVD: Audition - freaky Japanese horror film. It's pretty good if you like scary movies.

Last movie: Snakes on a Plane
Last DVD: The Grateful Dead - Still Alive & Well

Fantastic. Just fantastic.

Although the Dead thing was pretty messed up. They had two concerts; one from the early 80s/late 70s and one from the 90s. They kept changing concerts after every song and so the sound quality kept changing. And they didn't even say which two concerts they were! Still, I only got it for a fiver.:imp

Yea, SOAP kinda rocked quite hard. Shite storyline, though. Samuel L. Jackson makes it totally worth the 105 minutes of your life and the ticket price. There's something about that mans voice...

On DVD: Little Fish with Cate Blanchett. Fantastic film about battling drug addiction.

Cinema: Well, its not even released yet, but The Last King of Scotland - a biopic about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin - is getting rave reviews and there's already (very) early Oscar hype. The book it's based on is brilliant and the author wrote the screenplay; usually a good sign.

I watched the saddest, most amazing film last night that I've seen in ages.

It's called Turtles Can Fly and it is about a group of Kurdish children who live in a refugee camp along the Turkish/Iraq border. They disarm land mines and sell them to survive. Most of the cast are non-actors, many really missing limbs from land mine accidents in the region.

Its not a pity-fest though, its a really intelligent, thought provoking film.

I'm looking forward to the new Christopher Nolan film, The Prestige.

Fantastic cast and seems like an really interesting story idea.

From acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan ("Memento," "Batman Begins"), comes a mysterious story of two magicians whose intense rivalry leads them on a life-long battle for supremacy full of obsession, deceit and jealousy with dangerous and deadly consequences.

From the time that they first met as young magicians on the rise, Robert Angier (HUGH JACKMAN) and Alfred Borden (CHRISTIAN BALE) were competitors. However, their friendly competition evolves into a bitter rivalry making them fierce enemies-for-life and consequently jeopardizing the lives of everyone around them. Full of twists and turns, THE PRESTIGE is set against the backdrop of turn-of-the-century London, the exceptional cast includes two-time Oscar® winner Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie.

The story line is actually quite clever - and as I said - takes a little bit from Memento I think in terms of style. Its hard to say too much without spoiling the plot but basically Bale is a guy who hasn't slept for a year, is troubled by something that he can't remember and gets fired after he causes an accident at his factory job that leaves a guy without an arm. Then, his mysterious guy starts following him everywhere and someone leaves strange notes on his fridge.......and much mystery follows.

I think its going to great too. Its pissing off the gypsies though....

A German group representing Gypsies says it has filed a suit to try to stop British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen showing his latest film in Germany.

"We are accusing him of defamation and inciting violence against [Gypsies]," said Marko Knudsen, head of the European Centre of Antiziganism Research.

Antiziganism refers to hostility to gypsies.

The group said it had filed a complaint to prosecutors over the film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, saying it treated violence and discrimination against Gypsy peoples as acceptable behaviour.

State prosecutors in Hamburg will investigate the allegations before deciding whether to take action.

In the satirical film, which is due to open in Germany on November 2, Cohen, creator of the comic character Ali G, plays Borat Sagdiyev, a fictional Kazakh television journalist who travels to the United States to report back on the American way of life.

The film's comic barbs also target Gypsies, Jews, women and many other groups.

Its got a non-linear narrative so it takes a while to put the various strands of the story together, but once you do, its brilliant. Babel follows the same format I believe.

Ha, I don't know if that is necessary. I've seen 21 Grams three times I think, and you do pick up more each time because the plot is quite detailed. But I think you can "get" it from the first viewing.

I'm not fond of the James Bond films but the new one, Casino Royale is getting very solid reviews. So is the new Bond himself, Daniel Craig, who apparently plays the character more as a grim killer than a sophisticated playboy.

NY Times review:

I've been looking forward to this movie since I heard about its development. I am a big fan of the Bond movies and have been disappointed with most of the Brosnan movies. Goldeneye is the exception to this being in my top 5 of all the Bond films. Glad to see such good reviews and I can't wait to get out to see it. The problem will be trying to convince the fiancee to go with me.

Daniel Craig looks like he will be as good as Sean Connery was - and much better than Brosnan. I'm going with a girlfriend next week and can't wait to see it. It's supposed to be much closer to how Ian Fleming described James Bond - cold, sadistic etc

Superficially,it's a mystery/thriller but it's also an indepth character study of one man's hidden guilt. Not an easy film, but fascinating. Haneke won Best Director at Canne for this one.

Yea, im still planning on seeing it. But now, everytime he starts talking about a movie i havent seen, i cover my ears.

I just saw "The Proposition" a western starring Guy Pearce. It's set in the Australian outback during the colonial period. I really enjoyed this movie. The conflict between the white and aboriginal populations as well as the landscape play a very important role in the film. I highly recommend it if you enjoy western films.

Shop Girl. I really recommend it, Great story, characters, acting. Sure Steve Martin does get a little self indulgent in parts, but he does redeem himself. Its such a beautiful look into the mind, heart and life of a young woman, very raw and honest I thought, My hat goes off to him. (it was a short story by steve martin btw)

I quite liked this as well. Although, it took me a while to get my head around the fairly unlikely nature of their relationship, especially given the big age difference.

Some early indicators for Oscar nominations this year. I'm hoping to see Babel this week.

VETERAN film-maker Martin Scorsese and Briton Stephen Frears have been named among the nominees for the Directors Guild of America awards, a key Oscars indicator.

Scorsese won a nod for his bloody crime thriller "The Departed'' while Frears was nominated for "The Queen,'' the critically acclaimed drama set in the days following the 1997 death of Princess Diana.

Other nominees for the DGA prize for outstanding directorial achievement in 2006 were Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Babel'' and Bill Condon for the musical "Dreamgirls.''

There was also a joint nomination for Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the makers of smash-hit independent comedy "Little Miss Sunshine.''

"Each of these five nominees has demonstrated a remarkable ability to blend craft and vision in the pursuit of masterful storytelling,'' DGA president Michael Apted said.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on February 3.

The DGA award has been one of the movie industry's most accurate indicators for who will win the best director Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Fifty-one out of fifty-seven times since the DGA Award's inception in 1949, the winner has gone on to take the Academy Award for best director.

Just got back from seeing The Pursuit of Happyness...... I was actually surprised at how good this is. I expected it to be one of those corny "rags to riches" tearjerkers, and while there is an element of that in the story; it's actually quite an intelligent look at poverty and social discrimination.
Will Smith is terrific.

I thought that that was excellent....until it fulfilled the "rag to riches" thing at the end with the corny celebrations of clapping in the street.....but other than that one scene, it was excellent...:upyours

The kid who plays Will Smith's onscreen son is actually his real life son.

I think it could be and I'm pretty sure Will Smith has a good chance of being nominated for Best Actor. It's that kind of "playing against type" dramatic role the Oscar judges always seem to love. His son is gorgeous and manages to be cute without being cloying.

Yes I agree, a couple of times it did start to stray into being overly sentimental, but overall it wasn't nearly as corny as I thought it was going to be. The credits said "inspired by a true story".... I wonder how much of it was fact? It seems like a remarkable story if it's true.

`Instinct,' `Little Man' lead Razzies

By DAVID GERMAIN
AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- At least someone was happy Sharon Stone reprised her notorious femme-fatale role with "Basic Instinct 2."

The box-office bomb received seven nominations Monday for the Razzie Awards that mock the bottom of Hollywood's barrel, among them worst picture and worst actress of the year.

Also receiving seven nominations was the Wayans brothers comedy "Little Man," about a thief posing as a baby, including worst picture and director for Keenen Ivory Wayans.

Shawn and Marlon Wayans shared a worst-actor nomination, while sisters Hilary and Haylie Duff shared a worst-actress nomination for "Material Girls."

"We stuck the siblings together to allow room for more dreck," said Razzies founder John Wilson.

The other worst-picture nominees were the fantasies "BloodRayne" and "Lady in the Water" and the thriller "The Wicker Man."

Winners will be announced Feb. 24, the day before the Academy Awards.

Joining Stone and the Duffs in the worst-actress category were Lindsay Lohan for "Just My Luck," Kristanna Loken for "BloodRayne" and Jessica Simpson for "Employee of the Month."

Stone previously won a Razzie as worst-actress for 1994's "The Specialist" and "Intersection."

"She's what we call a Razzie repeat offender. Perhaps even a recidivist," Wilson said.

"Basic Instinct 2" also had a nomination for worst screen couple for Stone's "lopsided breasts." Also nominated were co-star David Thewlis for worst supporting actor and the movie's director, Michael Caton-Jones.

Along with the Wayans, "Little Man" co-star Rob Schneider had a worst-actor nomination. The other nominees were Tim Allen for "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause," "The Shaggy Dog" and "Zoom"; Nicolas Cage for "The Wicker Man"; and Larry the Cable Guy for "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector."

The Razzies added a new category, worst excuse for family entertainment. The nominees were "Deck the Halls," "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties," "RV," "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" and "The Shaggy Dog."

The big surprise for Wilson was that all-time Razzies champ Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky Balboa" was not nominated. Stallone, who has 30 Razzie nominations and 10 wins, surprised many skeptics by delivering a sequel that was well received by audiences and earned better-than-expected reviews.

"At the first of the year, you could not have convinced me it wasn't going to be a Razzie contender," Wilson said. "I would like to publicly say that Stallone has made a good movie."

The Wicker Man is one of the worst big-budget films I have seen for quite a while. Nicolas Cage wears a toupee that looks like a mammal has been stapled to his head. He punches several angry lesbians in the face while wearing a bear suit. True story. It's so bad it's funny in places.
