Aussies want own umpires
Cricket Australia (CA) want to use their own umpires for the upcoming Ashes series against England.

CA's head of communications Peter Young believes the best two umpires in the world should be used, regardless of nationality.

Australia currently have three representatives on the International Cricket Council's (ICC) 10-man elite panel of umpires - Darrell Hair, Daryl Harper and Simon Taufel (pictured) - leading Young to claim the best decision makers are Australian.

"If we lived in a perfect world it would be great if the forthcoming Ashes series, played between the best two teams in the world, could have the best umpires in the world officiating," said Young.

"At the moment the best umpires officiating are Australians."

The ICC have appointed neutral umpires for all Test matches since the formation of its elite panel in 2002 and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are unlikely to agree to break that system.

"The ICC have a well-established principle of appointing neutral umpires for Test matches," said an ECB spokesman.

"It's a process that the ECB are extremely comfortable with."

The first Test of England's Ashes defence gets under way at the 'Gabba in Brisbane on November 23.

:lol This might be our greatest cricketing idea since underarm bowling.

Seriously though, we cannot get a Pakistani umpire or we're doomed.

Here's me getting an enthusiastic about the Ashes already - we've got a while to go yet. :\

Well all we've got left here are one-dayers, and I can't get too excited about them.

That's partly it, and partly because we suck at them.

Im not sure I can get into this 20/20 thing though. Haven't really watched enough of it yet but it all seems a bit hit and giggle to me.

It's fun though. One days seem to have a set pattern though, hit-out for the first 15 overs, do nothing, then go at it for the last 10.

Yep, I'll agree that the one dayers can get a bit too predictable in that regard. I'll have to make an efffort to watch more 20/20 this summer - its probably something I should actually make an effort to go out to see rather than watching on telly.

Do they have anyway to watch this on the internet? I am a big fan of most sports and think that I would maybe like to watch some cricket, however it certainly won't be carried on TV here in the states.

I don't know to tell you the truth. I'll check the Cricket Australia website out sometime today when I have the chance and get back to you if you like.

Be warned though - watching Test cricket is a bit like watching paint dry if you don't udnerstand what's going on.

What is "test" cricket? Is it somehow different?

Yep, there's a world of difference between the different types of games. Test cricket is the serious stuff - it goes for five days and often ends without a result.

If you're new to cricket, I would recommend starting with the one day matches - they are shorter, easier to follow and always have a result at the end.

I'll believe that when I see...no when it happens I'll believe it. As long as England's middle order holds we have a good chance.

Such is our greatness that even when we lose we still give the appearance of having won.
