Crikey, he's cactus. :[

Apparently skewered by a giant stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef earlier today.

Yeah, it's all over the news here. Mad bugger was living on borrowed time wasn't he?
Apparently the barb pierced his chest. Nasty!

BTW - A thread like this on the .org has turned into a Britain vs Aus Thread, that I can't quite believe.

To be honest I don't know, but two people ended up arguing over the monarchy.

In honour of Steve's memory, I hope the Aussies won. Just had a guy on telly saying that no-one has been killed by a sting ray in Australia for more than 10 years - and even then they died from heart failure, not injuries caused by the actual barb. He was incredibly unlucky, the barb pierced his heart and killed him instantly. Sad.:(

Woah...that's unlucky.

A bit better than what it said on Ceefax over here:

"...killed by a fish"

Hard to believe really. Especially for a guy who was constantly putting himself in dangerous situations for him to die in such a freaky way. Very sad. :(

This has just dominated everything over here. Its funny, because while he was obviously very well known here, he was probably more widely liked in the US. Many here (including myself at times) were a little embarrassed by his full-on Australianess. He was like a throw back to our old ocker days ala Paul Hogan.

Only in death are we really beginning to appreciate the guy's contribution to the environment and education - and look beyond all the "crikeys".

What do you suppose the chances are that we will be able to see that? I hope they release it...I've never seen a sting ray goring before.

Now why would you want to see that? Yuck. I think the chances of it being released are sweet FA - unless someone manages to bribe a policeman or something.

You should watch that documentary about the American guy who gets eaten by the bear - I forget this name, but the doco has got audio of him and his girlfriend being killed. There's a thread about it somewhere in nRAC.

This just came through on the net - article quoting Irwin's manager saying the footage is "shocking". Apparently Irwin pulled the barb out of his chest before he passed out.

i still feel bad for him and his family, but i think we all kind of saw him dying doing this kind of thing

Yep, he certainly pushed the envelope. A snake bite or a croc attack would have seemed more likely though than this. Getting killed by a sting ray is virtually unheard of.

Oh okay - I heard the audio on some special that was on a couple of years ago - it was horrible.

There's some debate over releasing the Irwin footage here at the moment, but the word is it won't ever happen - at least not officially.

There was some debate on the local AM talk radio station here in Milwaukee this morning about whether or not the video of Steve dying should be released to the public. Does this mean that its release is actually being contemplated by the family?

foggy

I highly doubt it. From what I read, John Stainton, Irwin's friend and filmmaker, said the footage will be destroyed once the coroner has finished with it. (Although I doubt that myself) Still, he seemed pretty firm that the footage will never see the light of day. I can't see why the family would ever release it, it wouldn't serve any positive purpose.

The callers on the show were claiming that it would be educational to show people the dangers of wild animals as a warning to amateur "crocodile hunters"

I wonder if he might have had a chance to survive had he not pulled the barb out himself. From what I gather the barbs are serrated like a knife, he might have made the wound worse when he yanked it out.

Yea, perhaps. Although given that the point had pierced his heart, I doubt anything could have saved him. He's been offered a state funeral - which is a big deal here. Apparently though, his family look like they will turn the offer down because they say he was just an ordinary bloke and wouldn't want all the pomp and ceremony. Nice.

Germaine Greer lost the plot a couple of decades ago...

Expatriate Australian academic Germaine Greer should "back off" and keep her "stupid" comments on Steve Irwin to herself, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie says.

Ms Greer last night told the Nine Network that the crocodile hunter, who died on Monday when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, had embarrassed millions of Australians with his cruelty towards animals.

The comments came as she defended a column she wrote for The Guardian newspaper in Britain in which she said the animal world had taken revenge on "self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin".

Mr Beattie today told the Nine Network it was unbelievable Ms Greer had so publicly put her own ego first while the family of Mr Irwin struggled to cope with their loss.

"Germaine Greer is just wrong and I just can't imagine anyone being more insensitive and, frankly, stupid," he said.

"This argument is just extreme radical rubbish from Germaine Greer and it couldn't come at a more insensitive time.

"Any suggestion that he (Mr Irwin) mistreated animals is just rubbish ... he educated a generation."

Mr Beattie said he wished he could triple the tax on Ms Greer's Queensland rainforest property in retaliation to the comments.

"We should double the taxation," he said.

"If I could do it I would double it or triple the taxation on it."
