Could be mistake. The guy already does everyhing else on the field.

Flintoff was named at the helm of the 16-man touring squad announced by chairman of selectors David Graveney at The Oval today, exactly one year after England won cricket's prized urn at the same venue.

"We had to make a very tough decision in choosing between Andrew Flintoff and Andrew Strauss for the captaincy and we were fortunate to have two such outstanding candidates available to us in Michael Vaughan's absence," Graveney said.

Regular captain Vaughan was ruled out of the tour some time ago as he continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery.

Strauss, after a 5-0 one-day series loss at the hands of Sri Lanka, led an injury-depleted England to a 3-0 Test series win over Pakistan, including the controversial forfeited fourth Test, and a 2-2 one-day series against the same opposition.

He was in charge of the side while Flintoff recovered from ankle surgery.

Flintoff, who led England in India and at home against Sri Lanka before he was injured, said he was pleased with the way his recovery was progressing and was looking forward to facing Australia.

"I'm very proud, excited about having the chance to lead the side in Australia,'' Flintoff said.

"I relish the challenge, relish the opportunity to do it.''

Also named in the squad was spinner Ashley Giles, who is continuing his rehabilitation from a lengthy hip injury.

England: Andrew Flintoff (capt), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Chris Read, Geraint Jones, Ashley Giles, Monty Panesar, Stephen Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Sajid Mahmood, Liam Plunkett, James Anderson.

Yeah the same thing happened to Botham when they made him captian...when they replaced him his bowling came back to form.

Not many can captain and be all rounders. Richie Benaud was one, Imran Khan another. Can't think of too many others though.

Well I guess we will know in a few months when we start the Aussie whitewash down under. Not much sleep for me for a few months.

This is the downside of Uni...no Sky Sports. And I doubt any pups will be open in the early hours to cater for me. But I will try to find one.

The main benefit of my job is the free Sky TV plus tvs in the office. I don't intend to miss any of the games.

I think my best bet is to befriend the landlord of an Aussie pub.

And the mind games start now - thanks to Professor Warne.

LONDON: England's squad for this summer's Ashes series is stronger than the one that beat Australia in 2005, says Shane Warne.

Warne has dismissed talk that England have gambled on too many injured players, and backed the decision to appoint Andrew Flintoff as captain.

"One thing that leaps out … is the number of players who are not fit at the moment, but I can't see why this is such an issue," Warne said in the The Times.

"By my reckoning, the first Test is 10 weeks away and, with the cricket ahead, the break could be the best thing for the likes of Ashley Giles and Steve Harmison.

"I don't agree that England are weaker than a year ago. In a couple of areas, I feel that England are actually stronger. Chris Read is the best wicketkeeper in the country and Monty Panesar is a more dangerous and aggressive spin bowler than Giles."

Warne agrees with the appointment of Flintoff to replace the injured Michael Vaughan as skipper ahead of present captain Andrew Strauss, and has likened the choice to the one between himself and Steve Waugh when Mark Taylor bowed out.

"He will lead by example and somebody of that ability is bound to have the respect of the team," Warne said.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Johnson has taken a significant step towards living up to the glowing appraisal he once received from Dennis Lillee, with a blistering spell to propel Australia to victory against the West Indies.

Lillee called the strapping left-armer a "once-in-a-generation bowler", and for a time it seemed that tag would become a millstone around a career beset by injuries and inconsistent form.

I'll be leaving cricket balls scattered around Glenn's jogging route.

No, we've provided Ooh AAh Glen McGrath with a seeing eye dog for this tour. Just in case.
