Maybe.

Authorities believe they know what killed the 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith and say criminal charges are possible but are awaiting a toxicology report to confirm their findings, -the Bahamas coroner said today.

Her Majesty's Coroner Linda Virgill said that, once the coroner's office receives the toxicology report of David Wayne Smith, it could launch a formal inquiry and there is the possibility his death on Sunday could result in the filing of criminal charges.

"We do know the cause of death," Virgill said. "But we need to confirm it with a toxicology report."

She declined to disclose details but said there was no sign of physical injury to Smith, who died while visiting his mother, a reality TV star and former Playboy playmate, in a hospital three days after she gave birth to a baby girl.

Deepening the mystery, Virgill said there was at least one other person in the room when Smith died. She refused to elaborate.

If a formal inquiry is launched, officials will not publicly disclose their findings until after it is completed, Virgill said in an interview.

Police were reconstructing Smith's steps since his arrival on Saturday in the Bahamas, said Reginald Ferguson, the assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamian Police Force.

Ferguson told the AP that no drug paraphernalia or traces of illegal drugs were found on Daniel Smith, in the hospital room or near the room.

"We haven't found any illegal drugs or anything of that nature in the course of this investigation," he said.

Police believe Smith went directly to Doctors Hospital in Nassau, where his mother was, after flying in to the Bahamas, Ferguson said.

Criminal charges? Holy crap. I thought Anna was in the room with him when he died, wasn't she?

Yep, and the police are now saying there was someone else in the room as well. Very mysterious. She's certainly had an eventful life - if that's the right expression. She also appears to be bat shit crazy most of the time.

She is a train wreck, yeah. I feel so bad for her son. The few times I watched her reality show he seemed like such a sweet shy, kid. Really quite grounded. I always felt bad seeing him on there amidst the drama and shenanigans of his Mother.

She came out here for some promotional work last year and was completely hideous. Drunk, slutty and breathtakingly stupid. It must have been horrible having her for a mother; unless she miraculously returned to normal off-camera or something.

Update on this:

Controversial former Playboy Playmate and reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith tried frantically to revive her 20-year-old son even after he had been pronounced dead by officials at the Bahamas hospital where she had given birth just days before, her attorney said yesterday.

She was then so traumatised by the sudden death on Sunday morning of Daniel Smith, which local authorities have termed "suspicious," that she experienced memory loss, and had to be reminded of what had happened, according to a statement from Michael Scott.

Mother and son, along with her longtime attorney and spokesman Howard Stern, had spent Saturday night together in Smith's room at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, where the reality TV star was recovering from the birth of a daughter last Thursday.

When Smith noticed, about 9:30a.m. on Sunday, that Daniel did not appear to be breathing, she awoke Stern, who checked his pulse and immediately summoned hospital personnel.

"Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the medical staff was not able to revive Daniel," Scott said. "Even after Daniel had been pronounced dead, Anna Nicole and Howard frantically continued resuscitation efforts."

Anna Nicole Smith was so distraught by the death of her son that she had to be sedated, her lawyer in the Bahamas said today.

"The devastation and grief over Daniel's sudden death coupled with the sedation has been so extreme that Anna Nicole experienced memory loss of the event," Michael Scott said.

Twas drugs after all.....

Anna Nicole Smith's 20-year-old son died from a lethal combination of methadone and two antidepressant drugs, a pathologist who conducted a private autopsy on the body said today.

Toxicology tests showed Daniel Smith had methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro in his system when he died on September 10 in a hospital room in the Bahamas where his former Playboy playmate mother was recuperating after giving birth to a daughter, according to Cyril Wecht.

"The fact that we have these drugs and the levels of the drugs overwhelmingly and most logically point to this being a tragic, accidental, drug-related death," Wecht said from his home in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.
