THE BOHEMIANS: Ryan Adams, Patty Griffin, Alejandro Escovedo, Tift Merritt, Steve Earle, and Dan Zanes. The term "alt.country" has gotten hazier since it was coined, in the 90s, to describe music that draws on folk and country but is produced and consumed outside the Nashville-L.A. pop machine. But these artists get to the essence of the term: country that is cerebral, devoid of anything hick.
