View Full Version : Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (May 15)
From wikipedia:
On May 8, 2006, Glenn Kotche said that the band was in the writing and demoing stages of creating a new record, and that four or five of those songs had made it in to the band's recent live sets. The new songs include "On and On and On," " The Thanks I Get" "Walkin'," "Impossible Germany," "What Light," "Let's Fight," "Either Way" "Let's Not Get Carried Away," "You are my face," "Patient with Me", "Sky blue Sky," "Shake it Off," and "Side With the Seeds." Kotche also said that some of the new songs were written on the spot in the studio by the band as a whole, as opposed to Tweedy fleshing out the song and bringing it to the rest of the band.
Following the fall tour, which ended with Nov. 24 and 25 shows in the band's hometown, Wilco will go back into the studio to finish recording its album, due out in April.
Jeff Tweedy also commented in Rolling Stone that the band has several songs up to record for their next record.
In a June 2006 interview, guitarist Cline revealed that the band would be writing and demoing new songs in August, followed by recording sessions in November[3] The band's next album is currently slated for a May 2007 release.[4]

In what is becoming something of an unfortunate tradition, Wilco's new Nonesuch album, "Sky Blue Sky," has leaked online, more than two months prior to its May 15 release date.
The group's 2002 album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" was online for nine months before it was eventually released in stores, and 2004's "A Ghost Is Born" also hit the Internet well before street date. In the latter instance, Wilco fan site Justafan.org asked fans who had downloaded the album early to donate money to Doctors Without Borders, a fund which eventually grew to $15,000.
"There's probably some good argument to be made that it will prevent a few people from buying the record," Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy told Billboard yesterday (March 8) at the band's Chicago loft. "But there's also the idea that I believe is true for us, which is, it's people listening to our music."
"We feel very proud of our record and we want people to hear it. Ultimately, that's the goal," he continued. "I think most people will do the right thing and support us and buy the record, even if they have downloaded it."
"Frankly, I would like to have people get a head start on knowing the material before we come to whatever town they live in," bassist John Stirratt added with a laugh.
To stem the tide, the group will stream "Sky Blue Sky" from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. ET this Sunday (March 11) on its official Web site.
"We've always viewed the whole thing as similar to radio," Wilco manager Tony Margherita tells Billboard. "We were prepared for it to leak as soon as the first advance CD went out. That's just part and parcel of the deal. As with previous records, our plan was and is to give people another way to hear the record besides the download, since these often sound like crap and are a pain in the ass for people who don't have a lot of time or are not super tech-savvy."
Wilco will get busy on the road beginning April 16 in Brisbane, Australia.

And for the doubters, You will end up paying around $24 for the vinyl in stores anyway, so its not like you are paying more for some cleverly disguised combo pack.

I'm liking this album. It's very stripped down...not as much experimental stuff like A Ghost Is Born...

It seems that Pitchfork didn't like it so much -- 5.2:
Charged up and bursting with eccentric and experimental talent, Wilco Mk. 5 seemed poised to generate the band's finest-- or at least most interesting-- music yet. Instead, it produced Sky Blue Sky.

I haven't heard any of this album yet, so I can't offer an opinion.
Having said that, I wouldn't place too much weight on Pitchfork's opinions seeing as they awarded Justin Timberlake the #1 Track of 2006.

Stylus gave it a B-, but the letter grade seems too high for the review they gave:

Based on the stuff I've heard on Wilco's website, I like it. And my copy of the LP /CD will hopefully be here tomorrow. :banana

got the cd in the mail tuesday,
and by the third listen i compeltely fell in love with it,
it's definitely a grower and it's amazing. at first the album
felt calm, a little too calm but it's also quite explosiv and has simple,
beautiful textures. it really does feel the most honest album wilco has put out. i'm already gonna say that this along with andrew bird's 07 album are definitely in my top 5 albums of the year. bright eyes & arcade fire are in the top ten..somewhere, i have yet to hear albums by the national, white stripes, rufus or ryan, but i'm quite anxious, especially for ryan's, naturally.
