Crowded House - Time on Earth

ATO Records has set July 10th as the U.S. release date for Crowded House's Time On Earth. It’s the band's first new studio album in 14 years, and features original, founding members Neil Finn and Nick Seymour, along with former member Mark Hart and new drummer Matt Sherrod. The band's original drummer, Paul Hester, passed away in 2005. The album is the band’s first since 1993’s Together Alone. The band will debut the new line up and material in America for the first time since 1996 at the Coachella Festival. Further tour dates will be announced soon.

Time On Earth was recorded at Roundhead Studios, Auckland, NZ, RAK Studios, London, and Real World Studios, Bath, and was produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ryan Adams) and Steve Lillywhite (U2, Morrissey). Johnny Marr features on two tracks, lead-off single “Don’t Stop Now” and “Even A Child,” a song he co-wrote with Neil Finn. Another album track, “Silent House,” was co-written by Finn and the Dixie Chicks, whose own version of the song appears on Taking the Long Way.

Both Johns and Lillywhite (especially) are terrific producers. They have certainlly bought out the big guns.

Review of Crowded House at Coachella.

AS out-of-town try-outs go this was a doozie. After an 11-year absence the newly reformed Crowded House chose the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the desert of Southern California as their first major show.

The band played at sunset and underneath a full moon on the final scorching day of this three-day celebration of alternative rock, hip-hop and electronica.

The venue was perfect in a way, because the festival - held at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio - is playing host to several reformed legends. They include the agit-prop rockers Rage Against The Machine and Scottish noise-pop merchants the Jesus And Mary Chain.

While the Americans have been focused on Rage and their notoriously fractured relationship - and to a lesser extent the equally fractious J A M C - they can't have missed the obviously good relationship on stage between original Crowded House members Neil Finn and bass player Nick Seymour. They were joined by longtime member Mark Hart, the new drummer Matt Sherrod and Finn's son, Liam, on acoustic guitar, vocals and with a bushranger beard.

The nervous start was understandable as the band faced 10 rows of Rage Against the Machine fans who had staked their positions at midday, remained unmoved through the hottest part of the day - the temperature at Coachella often rises to more than 38 degrees - and were ready to explode. Adding to their nervousness was the question of how many in the audience would remember the Australian band more than 20 years after their big American hit.

But the nervousness disappeared and the familiar sound and style soon arrived as that first American hit, Don't Dream It's Over, eased the passage. Two new songs sung in comfortable harmonies arrived without flaws (a five-part harmony graced the end of Private Universe) and there was an outbreak of singing and dancing in the audience.

If this was an out-of-town try-out you would have to say the show looked like it has legs.
