View Full Version : The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism

One of the best of 2007 for me so far. This is the sort of album you'll still be listening to, and enjoying, ten years from now.

North Carolina roots trio takes a transcendent stand against postmodern emptiness

In the late ’60s, The Band’s earnest roots rock helped topple nonsensical hippie credos like, “Don’t trust anyone over 30.” Similarly, The Avett Brothers—still unjaded after half a decade in the music business—do their best to combat modern-day hipster detachment and pseudo-coolness with Emotionalism’s simple, poetic story-songs and bittersweet, introspective laments. The album—down to the title itself—is a celebration of unselfconscious passion. It’s also a huge step forward musically: The relative sonic polish works magically in contrast to the Avetts’ jagged edge; they go beyond their core of acoustic guitar, banjo and upright bass (a change foreshadowed by Four Thieves Gone’s “Colorshow”), adding piano, B3, drums, electric guitar and mandolin; the vocals feel more carefully arranged, relying less on energetic screams and shouts and giving the melodies room to breathe; and the influences peeking through are more varied than ever, the music sporadically reminiscent of everything from Help!-era Beatles to Chopin nocturnes. The Avetts, long deemed “promising” by critics, are now unflinchingly—unguardedly—delivering on that promise

I've been meaning to look into them forever, would the new album be a good place to start?

I haven't heard much of their earlier stuff, but judging from what I've read, yes. This album is a bit more polished apparently, but it still sounds pretty earthy and authentic to me.

No, I like the album. But I have been listening to The Avetts for 4 years now, and the album is a bit too watered down for me, but that is just me.

I would start with, Mignonette, that is a bit harder to find, so if not that, go with Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions. Both are insane and totally represent the band at their best and most powerful.

Sorry, I f'n love the band, hence the rambling post...

And see them live, for the love of god, see them live.

I love this album!

Oh, and yes, I'd do something really strange if that would make me see 'em live!

Went to my local record store to purchase this, and its not there. :(

I'm gonna have to do some searching, or wait until my Minneapolis trip in September.

That good live, yeah? They're playing a small GA show near me and tickets are only 15.00 so I might go and check them out, even though the album didn't really grab me, to be honest. I'm gonna give it a few more listens, maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. Anyone else on here see them live?

What is hilarious is, the House of Blues show I was at in Chicago was taped. And in the middle of the video and the preview snapshot, it is totally, ME in the shot. I didn't even freakin notice the guy with the video camera right behind me...

Note: I have no idea how to post YouTube video on the board, just links, if anyone wants to let me know that would be great...

You use the yt tags:

[ yt ]utube clip number[/ yt ]

But with no spaces.

The numbers you use are what's after the = in the utube url. Example, use what's in bold:

I'll just post your clip here too while I'm at it:

I haven't been able to get into this CD. Need to give it another spin tonight.
