This was under the "Book Now" section in the Sunday papers and made me smile:
"The back on form alt-country ICON has his Cardinals in tow for a new tour beginning 11 November Millennium Centre Cardiff"
I hadn't actually thought of him that way. :guitarsolo

i·con [ kòn ] (plural i·cons)
noun
Definition:
1. image of holy person: a holy picture, carving, or statue of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, or a saint, especially an oil painting on a wooden panel, of a type revered in the Eastern Orthodox churches
2. somebody famous for something: somebody or something widely and uncritically admired, especially somebody or something symbolizing a movement or field of activity
Icon is up there with "hero" and "legend" in the lexicon of overused and misused phrases. Dylan or The Beatles could rightfully be described as musical icons. At this stage of his career, describing Ryan as an icon is a pretty big stretch, imo.

I wouldn't consider him an icon at this point either, he's great yes, but I don't think he's been around for long enough to be considered an icon.

Well, if you consider that Ryan has been one of the leading stars of the "alt-country movement" (which, as defined by those folks who define such things, started in 1990 with the publication of No Depression), I suppose he could be considered an alt-country icon.
There's a lot of semantics involved there. One may be more more inclined to consider alt-country icons to be the Byrds, the Dead, Gram Parsons, etc, even though they were doing their thing 20+ years before the "creation" (cough cough) of "alt-country" (as defined).

me neither.
i think ryan's just a dude. i highly doubt he'd be comfortable being an Icon.
he already seems uncomfortble enough having fans.

I think that just about sums it up. I think we embarrass the life out of him.

well you are right, I don't think he's an icon, and I'm pretty sure that he doesn't think he is, but he fully knows, since he's an artist (lucky one at that of getting semi-famous) he knows he's going to put up with fans, its part of what an artist has to do... along with making music and performing it you know? and yes we do embarrass him, but yet again he has to love his fan base at the same time, its just an on-going circle if you think about it
but I honestly can't wait to see what kind of music he makes 6-10 years from now
only time will tell
