The length of the show really doesn't bother me that much but I do agree that the setlists have become very samey. There doesn't seem to be much thought going into them. Basically it's the same old songs in a different order with the odd different 2 or 3 in the mix. That's a shame for a man with such a large catalogue of songs to choose from. It's an easy option. I imagine if anything different is going to crop up it will be at the Halloween show.

I agree, but I was just thinking yesterday how I think it would be tough to remember all of his songs (music & lyrics) to be able to switch it all the time. Maybe it's because I'm not a musician, but it seems like a lot to do.

Okay, this report has a bit more detail...
I must say it was a little absurd for him to flip out like that. At the same time people know he is very immature and should avoid yelling for Halloween Head after every song. After his rant no one really yelled for anything but it was too late by then. It was pretty sad. I keep hoping Ryan will grow up and find a better way to deal with these things but he isn't going to. I am just thankful I didn't have to pay for tix. I hate to say this but it is no wonder his record label was not interested in re-signing him. He is just hard to deal with. That said what little bit was played was excellent. I enjoyed it tremendously but I doubt I'll pay to see him unless he is at a festival because there is just too much risk involved.

So the show ended early again and I am convinced that ryan adams is a fucking bitch for walking off stage early!! This is the third time that I have seen him and the second time he has left early! You have to expect that people are going to yell for songs considering the enormous song catalog that he has. The requests were not that bad either. It was certainly no reason to end the show early and walk off.

I disagree. The guy yelling for halloween head was very annoying. He was such a douche in his non stop requesting that it pissed me off. I knew it was coming. I saw it coming. Ryan is Ryan and he doesn't put up with shit like that. But they persisted and ruined it for all. Had they just STFU and let him play what he wanted he would probably be calling it quits right about now. Instead they kept on and he walked off. After the first request you should just shut up. I just hate someone didn't drag the jackass requester out and kick the living shit out of him before Ryan walked off.
Totally agree. People who shout out song requests at a concert should be beaten to death. :upyours

Couldn't have said it better. There are just some things you have to deal with. And from accounts at the Archive it sounds like most of the audience was very attentive and respectful, with only a few jackasses. It's a pity.

i mean, stories like the Nashville Summer of '69 guy at The Ryman, that's understandable, or any other acoustic-themed performance. that's a whole different world.
big room rock show?
it's gonna happen. he said it himself (in an interview i read once, around the time if the aforementioned SO'69 thing. it was in Spin, maybe?) that he focuses on the bad more than the good, and he needs to remember that, i think.

Exactly. They handled it well in Charleston, even made jokes about and asked people to get it out of their systems. Why not take the same approach everywhere else you play. It's a rock show, not a ballet.

Anything is possible I guess, but it's a pretty high risk strategy for a touring band.
And Ryan must be an outstanding actor. I remember the look on his face (they upped the lights at the end) and his tone of voice just before he finished the Sydney show - if he wasn't really pissed off he should be auditioning for movies.

Dear Ryan Adams,
I really love your music. I don't think Cold Roses will ever be played like it was tonight in Birmingham. Seriously, it was that good. I even feel like the way you played Shakedown on 9th was better than on Heartbreaker. Rescue Blues was incredible and What Sin was possibly the coolest I'd ever heard you do it. My wife really got excited when you played "I Taught Myself How To Grow Old." That's one of her favorites.
I'm not at all disappointed in your music tonight (I can't wait to get my hands on the bootleg). I'm disappointed with how you handled yourself on stage and how I was robbed of hearing you play because other people were yelling out songs for you. Dude, they were your songs too... I didn't hear anyone heckle you with Summer of '69 until you started whining about it. I can't tell you how many nights I've had to put up with people yelling for me to "Play Freebird!" or, my personal favorite, "Do You Know Any Ryan Adams?!?!". I would do a lot to be in your shoes professionally and if you're so miserable on stage being asked to play songs that you wrote and that people love then it makes me think you're undeserving. Not all of us get a shot like you got so be thankful for what you have while you have it.

Isn't this all self-perpetuating? The more the fans yell out the worse he acts so the fans yell more and round we go and Ryan storms or skulks off stage and everybody loses. It's not true that there's no such thing as bad publicity. At least drunk on stage he was entertaining for all the wrong reasons maybe.
It should have been a good show - he'd mixed up the songs a bit more.
He seems to be "losing it" more and more often on this tour and I find that very disturbing. Boards like this are usually peopled by his most devoted fans and if we're getting pissed off he should be wary of pressing the self destruct button in this way.

Review from The Birmingham News.
Frontman gets testy, music remains terrific at Alabama Theatre Review rating: Four out of five stars
Will fans ever leave a Ryan Adams concert completely thrilled and satisfied?
Not likely, unless Adams gets a personality transplant and loudmouths in the audience are fitted with silencers.
Monday's 8:30 p.m. performance at the Alabama Theatre contained flashes of brilliance, spurts of anger and a rather abrupt end, possibly caused by requests and obnoxious comments shouted from the balcony.
But it was business as usual for Adams, a volatile and eccentric artist who keeps ticketholders on the edges of their seats, waiting to see what might happen.
Musically, there was little cause for listeners to complain. Adams, 32, remains an astonishingly talented singer-songwriter, capable of effortless transitions from rock to folk to country to psychedelia and back again.
He and his four-man band, the Cardinals, played two short sets (about 70 minutes total) that were dynamic despite their brevity, pulling more than a dozen songs from albums such as "Easy Tiger," "Jacksonville City Nights," "Heartbreaker" and "Gold."
The Cardinals watched Adams closely throughout the concert, following his lead during powerful renditions of "Cold Roses," "Please Do Not Let Me Go," "I See Monsters," "A Kiss Before I Go," "Goodnight Rose," "Bartering Lines" and "Peaceful Valley."
The tightly wound frontman sang with passion and played guitar with intensity on the darkened stage, and if his vocals rode low in the sound mix, it must have been because Adams wanted it that way.
Monday's performance seemed precisely calibrated to emphasize the strength and fluidity of the instruments, each of which could be clearly distinguished.
Of course, it's always a guessing game with Adams, who didn't trouble to explain the presence of Big Bird from "Sesame Street" (a cut-out of the character peeked from behind the gear on his side of the stage) or elaborate on an odd comment about "optical illusions and the card catalog system."
For most of the first set, he held his inner brat at bay, keeping his head down and focusing on the music.
Cocky, sure. But Adams' demeanor was tame compared to his last appearance here at the 2005 City Stages festival, when the audience was forced to endure his derision and wait for songs that came far too seldom amid bitter, spacey monologues.
Perhaps Monday's crowd at the Alabama -- a near sell-out, it appeared -- exhaled in relief and became overconfident when Adams approached the microphone and promised more music after the break. "The gig's not over," he said.
As it turned out, the second half was peppered by pique -- the result of an overzealous guy who yelled for "Halloween Head," one of the tracks on "Easy Tiger." Other audience members bellowed their own remarks and requests. Adams, seated at a red piano, bent over and plopped his head onto his arms in frustration.
His mood blackened thereafter, although the music didn't stop immediately and its quality didn't diminish. In fact, Adams and the band offered an incendiary version of "What Sin Replaces Love." He did begin to talk back to the hecklers, chiding them for interrupting his show and trying to alter his vision for the set list.
Horrifying meltdown? Hardly. On the Adams eruptions meter, this one barely registered, rating maybe a two on a 10-point scale. Still, it injected a sour note into the proceedings -- and left audience members wondering if Adams had cut some songs from the show to teach them a lesson.
Ryan Adams: Jerk or genius? The debate continues.
