not including ryan adams.

i went to see Kasabian all the way back in december last year in cardiff and it was amazing. going to see kasabian is more like going to an old school rave or something like that, just continuous beats and lights going around everywhere. this band is rock n roll, sometimes possibly a little too much that it becomes a bit cliche. been dissapointed by both their albums, but as a live band theyre stunning and absolutely massive.

look forward to reading everyone else's live experiences

I saw Josh Ritter last night and it was the best concert I've been to in a while. The songs were great. The few songs he did unamplified were beautiful. His Cover of Springsteen's The River was amazing.

It was a complete 180 degree turn from what I saw from Ryan a couple of weeks ago. Josh actually smiled, looked like he was enjoying himself, and carried on conversations with the audience.

Best $18 I've ever spent on a concert.

I saw Ted Leo & The Pharmacists on Wednesday night. It was an energetic (and LOUD) show, and Ted was very interactive with the crowd. I didn't know much of his latest stuff (Tyranny Of Distance and Hearts Of Oak are the ones I usually listen to) so I probably would have enjoyed it more if I knew more than 30% of the songs.

He did a great Springsteen cover too -- Dancing In The Dark.

Glad you had such a good time. :upyours I saw Josh recently too, awesome show. I agree his cover of The River is wonderful, I was really happy he played it. Did he tell the paper route story? And he really does seem like the happiest man on the planet, I've never seen anyone smile so much. I was a fan before, but I definitely walked away an even bigger one.

Anyway, the actual last show I went to was Of Montreal. Everyone in the place was dancing, (lots of people in costume too :lol) it was a blast. To make things even better Grand Buffet opened. :guitarsolo

I saw Damien Rice a couple of weeks ago. I'm probably his only fan on this board. Even though it was a big venue he was fantastic. A great mix of songs, very chatty, very amusing and a great atmosphere. The sort of show where you walk away on a high....but bad or good no one quite matches up to Ryan for me.

Always nice to see Ryan Bingham fans on here. I saw the Black Crowes and Son Volt not long ago at an outdoor festival. They were both GREAT! He played a 2 and a half hour show and played so many songs from Audioslave/Temple of the Dog/Soundgarden and his solo stuff. I saw Crowded House last night and it was bloody fantastic. 21 songs, 6 from the new album and the rest was back catalogue stuff. They played Fingers of Love, my favourite CH song in the second encore, so I was a very happy punter.
The night started well when we got a car park pretty much right outside the venue, even though we didn't get there early. I think someone must have just left and it was a complete chance that we were the first to come along. Then we went into the venue (which was a huge arena) and walked right to the front (our seats were in the sixth row from the front - yay for presales). Once Crowded House started we only stayed in our seats for about 3 songs before going to the front and standing. By half way through the show the whole venue was standing pretty much. The only bad thing was the sound in the venue but the band were in top form and it was a great show.

Today I got my tickets to Big Day Out, really really looking forward to seeing Arcade Fire, I hope they do a sideshow as well though. Also got a ticket to Interpol in Feb and tickets to Liam Finn (son of Neil Finn from Crowded House). He released his first solo album a few months back and it's fantastic, one of my top 3 albums of the year. Live he's absolutely incredible to watch. He does his show with no band, he has a looping guitar pedal so he'll loop parts then play more parts over the top, sing the vocals, jump on to the drums and bash along, while changing loops at the same time. It's really amazing, like watching a scientist at work. Ramble, ramble, ramble.....

I was at Bright Eyes on Friday night. It was a pretty good show -- he plays a lot of his back catalogue so that was good (this was my first Bright Eyes show). The songs from Cassadaga would have sounded better if the violin came along to the show, though.

If you happen to go to a show where Simon Joyner is opening, show up late. The guy is HORRIBLE. It sounded like he had no clue what notes to sing his own songs in, so he just decided to guess. We hung out in the lobby after hearing the first couple of songs, and a lot of people streamed out to the lobby after me. :downyours

Moving this here....I posted it in the wrong thread earlier.

Just caught Mary Gauthier last night (A-). Amazing show. I think she must pour all of her darkness and negative energy into her songs, because she's really upbeat and quite funny/positive in person.

A woman by the name of Diana Jones opened for her. Apparently, she just got done doing some touring with Richard Thompson. I was quite impressed with her. She has a song called Pony that about made me cry like a baby....and I'm not a crier....especially not in front of people.

If ya'll don't have Mary's new record yet, I highly recommend it. It'll be in my top 5 for the year.

Patty Griffin at The Basement, Sydney, last night. This hole-in-the-wall style venue was the perfect place to see Griffin on her first ever Australian show.
It was like seeing her play in your living room - if your living room had a huge bar in it.

She was magnificent and that famous voice is even more gorgeous live. No Bad News, Useless Desires and Up On The Mountain were probably the standouts. She's also extremely humble and friendly on stage - by the end of the show it felt like she had blown kisses, smiled and bowed to every person in the room. She needn't have bothered, by about song 3 in the setlist the entire audience was in love with her anyhow.

If you get a chance to see her anywhere - do it.

Although I'm not that huge a Sufjan fan, this was one of the best shows I have EVER seen.

There were 10 people on stage comprising of a 5-piece brass band, a drummer and a guitarist, with Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) and....wait for it, boys......Annie Clark (aka St Vincent) on backing vocals.
For Majesty Snowbird, they all donned wings and then during Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Sufjan did some hula-hooping :lol.

I saw the National two nights ago. A definite five stars. One of the best shows I've seen in a long time. The mix was great, the musicianship was incredible, they had a great rapport with the audience. At one stage when Matt asked how everyone was, someone yelled out "I could do with a beer" to which he replied "OK, pass this back" and gave a beer to someone in the front row to pass back to this girl about 8 rows back. He then said "Oh, you probably need a bottle opener, pass it back up here" So the beer went all the way through the audience up to the stage again to be opened. It then got passed back to this girl again and Matt said "Yeah, I'm awesome" It was very funny.

It was a great set too, they opened with Start A War, it was absolutely beautiful. Followed by Mistaken for Strangers, Secret Meeting, I can't remember after that. They played everything from Boxer except for Guest Room and Gospel. Quite a lot from Alligator including Abel, Mr November, Daughters of the Soho Riots. There must have been a couple from the first albums as well since I didn't recognise them. I will definitely be buying those albums now though.

It was the best set I have ever seen in my whole life, and I could certainly rattle off a long list of fairly legendary acts that I have seen. I knew they would be good, but I wasn't prepared for how good. I cried. It was so beautiful, so intense and I have never ever seen a band before who were so into the music. Will climbed up the scaffolding with his drum, Win dived into the crowd, Regine played about 5 different instruments. They played 11 songs - 6 from Funeral and 5 from Neon Bible. I thought was nice of them to play so much Funeral stuff since they've never been down this part of the world before. I am so tired now, I'm going to bed. Die! - they're a Kiwi indie band who have been making some waves over in the US and the UK. They're pretty intense and not everyones cup of tea but I like them. I really wanted to see Battles but their time was changed only a few days ago and they ended up on at exactly the same time as Arcade Fire. I wasn't actually very impressed with this year's line-up but Arcade Fire made it for me - it ended up being one of my best BDO's. Keen to hear how yours is. Hope you have heaps of fun!

Arcade Fire was incredible tonight - so much better than I had expected. I'm still no fan of Neon Bible, but the Funeral songs were just phenomenal and opening with Wake Up was perfect.
There were 10 band members onstage and nearly 3 times as many instruments! There was so much musical talent on the room, with just about every band member switching instruments after each song. They were just pure energy, with Will kicking and jumping all over the place and dashing back and forth across the stage like a hyperactive kid :lol
Win even had the entire seated portion of the audience on the feet for the last third of the show and everybody really got into it. It was exhilarating to know that everybody in attendance really wanted to be there - after all, these were the people who scored tickets in the first 3 minutes...before they sold out.

I've been going to the ridiculously cool little gathering called the Mad Ripple Friday Night Hootenanny. It's held on Friday night (duh) in the dingy basement of a coffee shop in South Minneapolis. 3-4 Various musicians/songwriters from around the TC area are featured each week. The talent/success of the actual music varies from week to week, but the vibe is always fantastic. Best part? 6-8 PM so you can either go home, or go catch more live music afterwards. A+

Yep, it was Wednesday and it was fantastic!
The 5 guys were joined by a trumpeter and trombonist (who'd been touring with Sufjan Stevens) along with Padma Newsome (of Clogs) on violin. They were very rocking live, with most of the songs building to a crazy crescendo of guitars, drums and violin :rock. Ha, Matt even helped out on cymbals for one song.

I was in the third row, directly in front of Matt and the two seats in front of me were empty, so I had a prefect view :upyours

Yeah I did, it was a very good show. It looked odd seeing the photo you posted - their show here was in a bar that only hold 500 people - it was sold out so it was everyone packed in really tight. They seem to have varied the setlist a bit - still the same opener though, really good choice I thought.

Yeah, the City Recital Hall was a posh, seated venue - it's mainly used for symphony concerts, so you can imagine what that's like. Surprisingly, it worked pretty well and the acoustics were excellent :upyours
I hope they come back and play at a more appropriate venue though.
They don't seem to mix up their setlists very much - the first night's setlist had Green Gloves further down and was missing Daughters of the Soho Riot.

Just got home from Big Day Out. This was my 2nd BDO experience, first one was last year. And I must say this year was definitely better. I expected Arcade Fire to be awesome, and they didn't disappoint. I loved Rage Against The Machine's performance. It was insane....closing with Killing in the Name. Oh man, awesomeness overload haha. Of course got pushed around a lot during that set, but that was to be expected. Overall a FANTASTIC day. :upyours

Highlights: RATM & Arcade Fire. Not getting sunburnt this year, woohoo! made sure I wore plenty of sunscreen this time around.

Lowlights: The dust around the main stages. It was horrid, I came home covered in it and felt like like I was breathing it in all day. Also, paying 9 bucks for each Smirnoff Ice

I saw Interpol tonight, very good but not quite as good as when I saw them on the Antics tour. Lovely venue and the lighting and sound was top notch.

I saw PJ Harvey play a solo show the night before at the Civic Theatre (which is pretty much the nicest theatre in the country). It was a really nice intimate atmosphere and she played a really good mix of stuff from all her albums. I'd seen her twice before with her band but I think solo was even better. She would be playing a beautifully fragile piano song one minute and then singing at the top of her voice over heavily distorted guitar the next. This year so far it would rate 2nd equal with The National. (Arcade Fire was #1 and I doubt anything will knock it off its perch)

I got to see St. Vincent last night and it was amazing. She actually played at the Andy Warhol museum, so as you can imagine it was rather small. There at most 100 people there. She played all of Marry Me, which made my night. Lots of talking too, she was telling us about touring in a line of about 10 '84 camaros because they couldn't work out a van thing on time. :lol Talk of taxidermy, random singing of bits of Ring My Bell. She also covered "Dig a Pony." Then there was a song that I didn't recognize. It wasn't all that long and the only lyrics were, "What would your mother say? Oh no. What would your father do? Oh no. What would the neighbors think? Oh no," over and over again.

I saw Stars last night in the tiniest venue ever, but perfect for the band.
Torquil was very passionate and somewhat melodramatic in his singing and playing. He was obviously enjoying himself immensely judging by the huge smile that was on his face the entire night. Poor Amy was rather sunburnt (just about every international band that have toured here this summer have been owned by the Aussie sunshine! :lol) and looked a mess, but her voice was as sweet and angelic as ever.
My only complaint is that they didn't play Calendar Girl :(

I saw Jens Lekman last night.

After cancelling a radio appearance on Friday due to illness, Jens seemed to be fully recovered and put on a wonderful performance for the adoring crowd. With plenty of witty banter, Jens encouraged audience participation - "people with dark voices can help sing the chorus, people with high-pitched voices shut up" and even threw in an anti-dedication "Fuck Sydney. Fuck your Opera House. I'm sick of your fancy beaches. This song is NOT dedicated to you." :rock

Oh and I scored a setlist...on a paper plate :lol

I first got into the Smashing Pumpkins back in early 1996, not long after Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out. They quickly became my favourite band. They were playing in my home town in May '96 but it had been sold out since it went on sale early in the year before I had discovered them so I couldn't go. I clearly remember having a very sad face that night wishing I was there.

Adore came out in '98 - no NZ shows, Machina came out in 2000, again no NZ shows, not even Oz ones (I was going to travel if I had to). Then they broke up and I was extremely sad since I was never going to see my favourite band live.

After waiting 12 years, I finally saw them last night. This was the concert I had been dreaming of since I was 16. I wasn't disappointed - they played heaps of songs that I wanted to hear, including Mayonaise, which is my favourite Pumpkins song. They even played Starla (a b-side that I always thought would be great live but thought I was dreaming) and closed the show with Muzzle, another favourite.

So all in all, one of the best shows of my life, I'm seeing them again tomorrow night, then twice in Melbourne in two weeks time. One show for every 3 years I've been waiting! :D <-me

Patty Griffin - Enmore Theatre, Sydney March 29.

While she may have hinted at feeling weary on this, the final gig of a year long tour to promote her latest album Children Running Through , Patty Griffin showed no signs of it in a knockout performance last night.
This was my second Griffin show and it occurred to me that she gets the audiences Ryan Adams dreams about. There was an almost reverential mood in the air and accordingly there were no song shoutouts, the bar was forgotten and each burst of applause was followed by an anticipatory silence in the brief moments between songs.

"Wow, you're all so very polite," she joked at one point. Enraptured would probably have been a more accurate description.

Griffin's voice has always been a thing of wonder and last night it performed all its usual magic and then some. Highlights included Making Pies, Chief, an almost punk version of Flaming Red ("I listened to AC/DC in the car today and I knew it would come out somewhere") and Nobody's Crying, which had more than a few audience members teary-eyed. A jammy version of No Bad News almost blew the roof off the Enmore, while a three song encore set included Up To The Mountain and the seldom-played Mary.

"It's been an honour to be in your country. I have the best job in the world and I thank every one of you for making that possible," she said midshow.
Last night, her Sydney fans were well rewarded for that dedication. In return, they offered a parting gift of their own - a thunderous standing ovation that lasted long after a beaming Griffin and her band had taken their final bows.

Setlist:

Hang On St Christopher (Tom Waits cover)

I went to the V Festival on Saturday. While I had a great time, it confirmed that festivals really aren't my thing.

Modest Mouse were fantastic! Knowing next to nothing about them before the gig, I was surprised and very impressed (so much so that I'm going to go their sideshow tomorrow). Isaac Brock was so intense - his face looked like it was going to explode on several occasions :lol. I was stunned to find myself surrounded by people who knew every word of every song. The setlist was (I think) roughly half newest album and half older songs including Float On. And they had two drumkits!

Next, Air played while we experienced a sunshower and then QOTSA who played as the sun set. Both bands were terrific.

The headliners were The Smashing Pumpkins who played while lightning flashed behind them in the distance. They opened their set with Today which was so appropriate. Other highlights for me were the solo acoustic version of 1979 and the usual favourites Tonight, Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings (of course) and Cherub Rock for the finale :rock
United States was awful and seemed to never end. We could've done without it :downyours.

I saw Spoon last night. I give it a 4/5.

After a rough start of us driving to the wrong venue (apparently Pittsburgh has 2 places with the same name in very different parts of the city) we got there late just in time to see the first opening band say thanks goodnight. Based on reactions of the people there I don't think I missed much.

Then the Walkmen played. They sounded wonderful, they were just boring as hell to watch because no one did anything. They played more then I expected - 10 or 11 songs, it was over an hour anyway.

This was a show put together by a local radio station so they had one of the DJ's go onstage before Spoon came out and plug themselves & the next show they have lined up and she actually called Spoon, "The greatest rock band around right now." I like them a lot, but jesus, that was just ridiculous.

Spoon finally came on about 9:40. Britt was very obviously pissed about something when they came out. They played 5 songs right after another literally running into each other. But, I will not complain because they played Me & The Bean which is my favorite & I really wasn't expecting it.

The crowd was really odd. There was a very wide variety of people there, lots of older people that I didn't expect (I'm meaning 40+). The people next to me reeked of booze & stale cigarettes and Lee said the guy next to him smelled like lunch meat, so the smell wasn't really the best. There were people dancing very oddly everywhere you looked. I think Spoon may attract a lot of hippies & I never knew. I don't have a problem with dancing at all, I just prefer it if how you're dancing actually goes with the music. When the band did stop for all of 30 seconds to get a drink of water & switch guitars some ass yelled out "play shit that rocks." There was a lot of yelling at the wrong moments, it was a crowd that probably would have driven Ryan to murder. I thought it was kinda sad because any of the poeple around me that I could see only seemed to know Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga songs.

Anyway, about half way through the show Britt finally seemed to be getting into it, and we got a thanks and a smile. They played until 11:10 or so. I was happy because they did a pretty good job of mixing songs in from all the cds.

:D <-me

How were the Melbourne shows? I heard Billy isn't too fond of the Australian crowds and talked a little shit.

He didn't talk at the Sydney V Festival, but I heard that he was in a pretty good mood at the Sydney sideshow and even cracked some jokes. He thought it was awesome that we have a politician who's a musician (Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil). Billy then joked that he never dances b/c when he does, he looks like Peter Garrett in a Midnight Oil's music video :lol

Well that sounds lame. All the Aussies on Netphoria are pissed off b/c Billy apparently disrespected them. Can you really blame him though? So annoying...:P

I heard that he gave the Brisbane and Adelaide crowds crap. The shit really hit the fan at the Melbourne sideshow though. It was all going swimmingly until about 2/3 of the way through the set, they'd just played Bullet with Butterfly Wings and the band had left the stage except for Billy who had an acoustic guitar on, he was playing a little blues type thing (since this was my third show I knew he'd play it for a bit and then break into 1979. There was quite a lot of crowd noise and Billy said something like 'This is the part of the set where you can all talk amongst yourselves', he didn't seem too pissed off at this stage, but after 1979 he played an acoustic version of That's The Way and then a cover called My Blue Heaven - at the other shows I attended when they played this (it's just Billy singing accompanied by piano) he has an electric guitar on which he doesn't play until the end of the song when the rest of the band come back on stage and they launch into The Everlasting Gaze.

Anyway, there was heaps of talking during this song, he took his guitar off and put it on top of his amp then continued on singing the rest of My Blue Heaven. I thought this was odd, but that he might just pick it up at the end of the song. But the song ended and he just marched off stage. You could see the rest of the band ready to come back on and they looked a bit confused, they just turned and followed him off.

Then the house lights came on, there was a huge chant for more that went for at least 5 minutes until finally the houselights came down again and they walked back onstage. Obviously after a few minutes he cooled off as he didn't seem grumpy for the rest of the show. They finished with United States and then left with no encore, which I kind of expected they might do since they'd already been off.

To be honest, the crowd was bad and I would have been pissed off if I was him too. Maybe he always intended to come back on, but thought he'd teach everyone a lesson. He can be a dick sometimes though.

The Melbourne V-Fest was something else altogether. I saw Hot Hot Heat (hated them), Modest Mouse (really enjoyed). QOTSA (for the third time this year, best set yet) and then SP. The crowd was actually really good and this was one of my favourite shows. They played Zero as the encore which they hadn't played since some time last year. Then they were leaving the stage but there was such a loud call for one more song that they came back again and played Cherub Rock. So my four show stint ended with two songs I really wanted to hear but hadn't up until that point. Fantastic.

Saturday night I saw Eels (which really was just only E and The Chet). Surprisingly low key, but still good. There was a heckler in the theater and E referred to him from then on as "Drunk Asshole".

There was a little vase of flowers sitting in between the two guys on stage. At the end of the night The Chet took the flowers out and chucked them at me. They're now in a tall glass of water in my kitchen.

I also bought a copy of E's book, "Things The Grandchildren Should Know." I'm not a huge Eels fan, but I think the little part of me that sort of pines for Los Feliz from time to time was motivated to see what he had to say. I'm 150 pages into it and highly recommend it to anyone who has even a passing interest in E or his music.

Oh, you got the flowers! I wish I'd been a couple of rows closer to the stage so that I could've had a chance at catching them Sunday night.

How much were they selling the book for? I was tempted but there was humongous queue at the merch table and then it sold out. I'm going to see if I can get it at Borders.

I thought the documentary was fascinating. Not only entertaining, but also educational (plus, I'm a science nerd). I loved the part about Schrodinger's Cat - the guy drew a terrific diagram and was such a gushing little fan boy :lol

Before the show, I listened to a recording of a recent show, which I then regretted b/c they used the same jokes and did the exact same readings last night so it came off as rather stale and rehearsed to me. It was a great show nonetheless.

One of the flowers is drooping. I named it "The E Flower".
The book's $35. Pretty standard for a hardcover. It's nice, too. I started reading the book on Saturday night and finished it this morning. TOTALLY worth it.

I went to my first Wilco show last night, and it is definitely in my top three shows of all time, if not at the top of the list. I know they take requests via their website, but apparently the whole setlist was requests. Jeff said "if you don't like this show, it's your own damn fault." :lol

They played from every album (I think) including That's Not The Issue ("Who's the sad SOB who requested this song? Look -- Pat's got a banjo!").

There were the standard drunks talking through a large portion of the show, and Jeff was sure to handle them in his own special way. Flipping them off, calling them douchebags and making a snide comment about if they requested the next song it won't matter because they'll just talk through it anyway (eliciting "oooohs" from the rest of the band). He also sang the first lines of Via Chicago to them ("I dreamed about killing you again last night, and it felt alright to me). :lol

The performance of Nels on Impossible Germany was worth the price of admission, and they face-melting encore ended the night perfectly.

Setlist:
Hummingbird
You Are My Face
Company In My Back
Impossible Germany
Handshake Drugs
Jesus Etc.
Pot Kettle Black

I saw Rooney last night, 7/10. The guitar player was visibility sick, and he usually has a great stage presence, so that hurt it quite a bit. And 70% of the crowd left after the 2nd band, I guess most were there for them, so I just kinda felt bad. It was still a worth while show, but you know, not legendary.

Saw Bob Dylan tonight. Good concert, but it would have benefited from a better venue. Unfortunately, Bob only played one of the songs I was hoping he'd play, "Mississippi," but it was still a good set list that included some surprises like "It Ain't Me Babe" and "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," and "Like A Rolling Stone," which he ended the show with (not sure why I didn't think he would play that one). The highlight was probably "Highway 61 Revisited." Normally that isn't one of my favorite Dylan songs, but they rocked it out big time tonight and it was a pretty intense performance.

I was also surprised that Bob didn't play guitar during a single song. He stuck to organ and harmonica for the whole show. I also loved how no one took the bans on cameras or smoking seriously (you could clearly smell pot by the 3rd song).

So I got a good show, and a really nice concert tee and poster. 4/5

I just got home from seeing The Everybodyfields at the Ark in Ann Arbor, which is this great, really small and intimate setting. Not only was it a free show, which the Ark has every 4th Tuesday of every month, but my friend and I got seats at a table right at the edge of the stage.
Anyway, they played about an hour set and switched instruments throughout. The sound was fantastic and the harmonies were amazing, which actually gave me a chill at one point. I'm definitely a bigger fan upon seeing them now.

So I saw REM Wednesday night for my first time and it was amazing! Seriously, anything I would have to complain about is rather picky and ridiculous (ie: take Bad Day out of the setlist & replace it with just about anything else).

The setlist turned out to be way different than I ever would have thought. I assumed since Accelerate is only 35 minutes, they'd play all of it then another hour and 15 minutes or so of older songs. Instead we got well over 2 hours of music and only about half of Accelerate.

Some of the songs included: Drive, What's the Frequency Kenneth, Ignoreland, Pop Song '89, Orange Crush, The One I Love, Losing My Religion, Walk Unafraid, Man on the Moon.....

The encore was 5 songs long & there was lots & lots of talking all night - mostly political given how close we were to DC.

I saw Bonnie "Prince" Billy in Oslo last night. Really great show. They played for about two hours, mostly songs from the new album and The Letting Go, but also older stuff including two of my favourite Palace songs (The Brute Choir and Ohio River Boat Song), a reworked Wolf Among Wolves, a wonderful version of I See A Darkness and a couple of songs from the Matt Sweeney/Bonnie "Prince" Billy album.
I was a bit suprised how much of the time he just sang and left the guitar playing to the other guitarist, but it was quite facinating to see his expressions and strange movements when he sang. You can really tell that he's also an actor when he sings.

The venue doesn't allow cameras so this is the best I could do with my cell phone:

George Michael - 8/10.

2 sets in 2 hours. Would have been better with some "dodgy Wham! tunes" like "Last Christmas" or "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" replacing a dance anthem or two to better showcase his voice.

Highlights - "Feeling Good"/"Roxanne"/"Kissing A Fool" mini jazz set with quartet; reworked "I'm Your Man;" "Father Figure" & "Faith" with a half-dozen very capable backing vocalists; fluffy "Amazing"/"Flawless (Go To The City)"/"Outside" sequence; cop outfit & radio reports of arrest for lewd & lascivious conduct for "Outside;" "Praying For Time," "Careless Whisper," "Freedom! '90" encore.

Huge state of the art LCD screen utilized tastefully throughout. Bonus point for using the show to advocate gay pride & rights with a sense of humor but no self-righteousness.

"Danko/Manuel" nearly made me cry and I thought I was going to fall off the balcony when they played "The Magician."

Went to a free Jakob Dylan concert tonight, 10/10 by far given how long he played for a free show, two hours almost straight through with one encore of about 3-5 songs.

The set was a mix of mostly his solo work, but he did manage to work a couple of Wallflowers tunes like "Josephine", "Three Marlenas", and "I Wish I Felt Nothing" in.

He sounded great with both a band of three guys behind him, or even when he did some songs solo. He had to have done almost twenty songs, if not a bit more.

Best day of concerts yet for Bluesfest '08. I saw Jason Collett, Most Serene Republic, and Stars.

Jason Collett was as great as I expected. Arrived at the show 5 minutes late because I thought it was happening on a different stage (on the way to the right a stage a cute redheaded girl stopped me because she got excited about my Sufjan Stevens tee shirt so the lateness wasn't so bad). He had Amy Milan from Stars duet with him on "Hangover Days" and then Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene unexpectedly played guitar on "I'll Bring the Sun." He also debuted a couple of new songs that sounded very good.

I had never heard a lot from Most Serene Republic so I didn't know what to expect. I was happy to find out they're a very good band. Their lead singer was really funny and they had this really cute guitarist (it was her birthday so during the Stars show they brought her out and had the crowd sing happy birthday to her).

Stars was the best show I've seen this festival and the 2nd best show I've ever seen (1st being Wilco). Fergie was playing at the same time on a different stage and so Torquil talked tons of shit about her ("I want everyone to yell 'Fergie is a public urinator'" *crowd yells "Fergie is a public urinator"*). Also, the first song of their encore was a cover of "This Charming Man" which caused me to be visibly excited. I really can't say enough about the showmanship of Torquil, one of their two singers. Amy was really good, but Torquil was better.

This sounds a great show - super songs. I don't need to ask how much you enjoyed it.

Of course, I loved it. :) Since I was only about 10 yards from the stage, I took some pictures, but I haven't had a chance to see how they turned out. If they're decent I'll come share.

I really wish the DBT show I went to was before Isbell left. I wanted to hear some live Goddamn Lonely Love and Danko/Manuel. :(

As promised, I put a couple of photos in my album. I really need to get a camera that is better suited to concert photography. At least you can tell who they are, though.

i haven't been to an actual gig for ages and ages

but i dreamed i was at a gig where chris isaak opened for elvis. elvis was definitely alive, and appeared to be in his 20s. it was pretty awesome. a pretty small venue, and elvis was just walking around chatting to everyone before he played.

I went to check out Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. Tons of fun. Very nice to join Ringo and an entire crowd in the big Yellow Submarine sing-along.

His band kicked ass. Each of them a "Starr" in their own right, each got to do two of their own hits.

Billy Squier (Lead Guitar) - The Stroke, Lonely is the Night
Colin Hay (Rhythm Guitar) - Down Under, Who Can It Be Now?
Edgar Winter (Keys, Sax, Percussion) - Free Ride, Frankenstein
Gary Wright (Keys/Synth) - Dream Weaver, Love is Alive
Hamish Stuart (Bass) - Pickin' Up the Pieces, Work to Do

Also had the awesome Gregg Bissonette on drums. Ringo did his songs in front of the band and the guest songs behind the kit.

I saw Sigur Rós on Saturday night and they were amazing. No Amiina on strings, but instead there was a 4-piece brass band.
The setlist was a mix of old and new songs, with most tracks from Takk... and Meš Suš ķ Eyrum Viš Spilum Endalaust.
I'm not a huge fan of Gobbledigook but it was delightful and lots of fun. Popplagiš as the first encore was incredible, definitely the highlight of my night.

Went to see Evan Dando last night. If anyone has been to see him, you'll understand just how many songs he can fit into such a short time. Probably player near 35 songs in about an hour and a half. Came on stage and played the album 'Its a Shame About Ray' in its entriety, and played songs of 2006's 'The Lemonheads'. Had a short break and then came back out and played some other 'hits' such as The Outdoor Type and Big Gay Heart.
Frank Turner was supporting, who was also really good.

The Breeders were in super fine form last night. Venue was small, sound was good and twat-in-audience factor was low. I love the Deal sisters so much.
Kelly was wearing this great t-shirt. On the front in small print was the slogan. "SALVA LAS TROCAS" ("Save the Trucks"). On the back was a picture of a truck and the phrase, "CARNE ASADA IS NOT A CRIME". In small print below that: SaveOurTacoTrucks.Org.

Banter was especially good.
Kim: So our mom has the Alzheimer's. I live with my mom and dad in Dayton, Ohio and our mom has Alzheimer's. She's nuts.

Kelly: Yeah, the last time I talked to my dad on the phone he said...

Kim: He got my mom on the phone and she said about our neighbour, "Carol's dead. Lesbians have moved in so I'm gonna go over there and steal my bird bath back."

Kelly: None of that is true. Our neighbour isn't dead.

Much to my delight they brought out a lot of old songs. "Safari" even. AWESOME. Took lots of photos, to be posted later, and got the set list.

Did something I rarely do and saw a band on the recommendation of a friend (who went with me). They're called Pivot, they're from Sydney, and they're the first Australian act to be siged to Warp records. Basically, they flew from Sydney to London, walked into Warp's offices and said, "Here's what we sound like. You should sign us." And they did. I reckon that's a cool story.

I liked them. They're a little harder than Cinematic Orchestra, but in a similar vein. They capped off their set with a stellar cover of "I Zimbra" by Talking Heads. Me thinks I'ma check out that album.

MSTRKRFT! WOO! GO CANADA!
So it's a quarter past 4 in the a.m. and I got home a little while ago. Really good show, made nicer by the fact that my professional-looking camera got me on stage to snap away to my heart's content. The venue's production manager was like, "Those are some of the best shots I've seen. How often do you shoot here?" I said, "Pretty much any time there's a gig here I want to see." He gave me his card and said, "Cool, well let me know any time you want to shoot here and I'll hook you up." OH HI.

I'm pretty happy with tonight's photos, I will say that. And the gig was awesome. And I shared a cab with a really nice girl who coincidentally lives 5 minutes from me and I might hang out with her tomorrow night. She works in film. Did I mention I love Melbourne?

Yeah, they opened for SR here as well, but I didnt really feel up to it since I'd seen SR twice already. Definitely check out Pivot! Seeing as they're a Sydney band I reckon they'd play a local gig much sooner than they would come back to Melbourne.

I've spent the last four days at the Oya festival in Oslo, thought I'd do short reviews of some of the gigs I saw:)

Iron & Wine: Rather disappointing, the band seemed bored on stage. I was also hoping they would play some of his older songs, but except for Upward Over The Mountain they only played songs from The Shepherd's Dog.

Grinderman: Nick Cave is possibly the most badass person alive. A lot of fun to watch.

Okkervil River: A lot of fun to watch. They played Lost Coastlines from the new album live for the first time, it sounded very good and has the bass player singing lead on parts of it.

The National: Great gig, their violin player almost looked as crazy on stage as Warren Ellis in Grinderman :D The gig ended with an amazing version of Mr. November

Sigur Rņs: With Amiina on strings and a five piece brass band. Absolutely stunning gig, by far the best one I saw during the festival. Possibly the best show I've ever seen. Hilde, do go see them!

Fleet Foxes: Another great gig. So humble, wonderful people that seemes truly amazed that so many had come to see them. They were really chatty and funny and the songs sounded amazing live. Very talented guys, they deserve all the attention they're getting. I also spoke to J. Tillman for a minute after the gig, so that was cool.

I saw Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band last night. They sounded great. I think they played the entire new album, which was fine by me. I think some people were disappointed that there wasn't more Bright Eyes stuff.

Conor sounded incredible. I have a new musical crush. Totally worth the three hour drive and the no sleep in the middle of trying to move!
