Anyone else a fan of Shane and the boys? If not, I'll just stay in here and talk to myself I guess....

Yeah, poor old Shane is a mess. He's in a wheelchair most of the time these days I think. Brilliant songwriter, brilliant mind which he has sadly destroyed with booze over the years. If I Should Fall From Grace With God is probably the Pogues best album. After that, Shane pretty much lost the plot.

I love The Pogues, thanks to a recommendation from Syd actually. My favorite song is A Rainy Night In Soho. <3 Favorite album is probably If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

Yes :upyours
And even though it's a cover, I don't think the Pogues have ever sounded better than And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Shane's vocals and phrasing on that song are just perfect.

From the two albumns I now own I would say not. You certainly have your quota of ballads which are Irished up a bit but you also have a bunch of kick ass irish folk songs with a punk influence.

Libertine, if you do want to check out a couple of tracks to see whether they are your style or not I'd recommend one or more of these:
Rainy Night In Soho (possibly their best known ballad)
The Sick Bed of Cuchulaiin (great example of how they put a punk twist on what is essentially Irish folk)
Bottle of Smoke ( amazing rapid fire punk delivery that also shows that a brilliant lyrcist MacGowan was at his best)

Another good one. It was a pity Caitlin ran off to marry Elvis Costello instead of staying with the bands, I thought she added an interesting dimension.

If I Should Fall from Grace With God video. This makes me really regret I never had the opportunity to see them play live.

I just got an Rest of the Best. It's really good and reminds me of a band from Dallas called Slobberbone. Their whole catalogue is great, but if anyone gets the chance check out their album "Barrel Chested" or "Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today." Unfortunately, they're broken up and the only place I know to find their stuff is on itunes.

Apart the two you already have, I only have The Best Of collection. However, I've just ordered Red Roses for Me, their first album. The problem with the later albums is that MacGowan doesn't feature much, or isn't on them at all.

Really? That's kind of weird.
Apparantly Peace and Love is supposed to be good too. :upyours

Peace and Love is the last album which Shane appeared on. He left (or was kicked out of ) the band after it was released. I've heard quite a few tracks from it - they are good. But Shane sounds drunk as a lord on every song. Misty Morning, Albert Bridge is probably the standout, beautiful song.
