View Full Version : What Album Should I Start With?

So the basic idea I had for this thread was that it could be a place for people who are looking to get into a certain band, but are unsure of which album to start with. I came up with the idea today when I bought a Guided By Voices live album. I really liked it and want to start listening to some of their studio albums, but don't know where to start. Instead of making a thread solely about GBV, I figured I'd start a more general thread that could (hopefully) last a little longer, not clutter the board up so much, and would be a good way for others to get into new music.
Okay, so lets see if this works and I hope you guys have some recommendations for my particular question.

I love Son Volt and GBV.
I think Trace is by far SV's best album.
As far as GBV goes, I wonder if you got the Live In Austin disk; it is so great. I have a feeling you'll end up buying their whole catalog, but you can't go wrong w/ Bee Thousand for starters.
GBV...GBV...GBV...GBV...

I just picked up The Search yesterday, but I prefer 'classic' the Son Volt to the other new one OohKeePah and the Melody of Riot, or whatever it is called. (ha, I made an accidental Phish reference)
Between the three classic line-up ones, it is a really hard pick, I think all three are stellar albums. I also really like Jay Farrar's solo stuff, which I HIGHLY recommend if you like Son Volt. Sebastapol is GREAT, it has some more experimental sounds (a la Tom Waits) and was recorded with Steve Drodz (from the Flaming Lips).

This might be a little more altcountry-ish than you just described, but I'd recommend checking out Justin Rutledge. Great lyrics, beautiful melodies. You can listen to two tracks from his latest CD here:

Hard to say. If you're more into country-rock/alt-country I'd have to say start with A.M. or Being There. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is way less alt-country and way more experimental, but it's probably a good starting point too.
That being said, my favorite Wilco album is A Ghost Is Born.

Red House Painters:
The only of theirs I have is Songs For Blue Guitar. It's probably their most accessible album because it has a few neat covers and it's a bit more electric. I think Starlite recommended me the Rollercoaster album (it's self-titled, but they have 2 self-titled albums).

So how about Magnolia Electric Co./Songs: Ohia? Where, o where, should I start?
The Magnolia Electric Co. album Fading Trails is really good and it's also put together from four different sessions, three full band and one Jason Molina session, so I think that might be a good place to start. And if you like that then the Sojourner Boxset is the complete sessions Fading Trails comes from plus a DVD.
I don't have all the Songs: Ohia albums, but the one called The Magnolia Electric Co. (It's all so confusing) is very good. I pretty much love all the albums by them I've got though.

With Tori I'd definitely start at the beginning with Little Earthquakes. Great album, it's still my favorite of all her work with Under The Pink being a close second. You can't go wrong with either of those 2 albums. Boys For Pele and From the Choirgirl Hotel are very good too. I can't seem to get into her recent work all that much, I still think her best albums are her first 3 releases.

What's a good Patty Griffin album to start with?
I would start with her debut album, Living with Ghosts. It's a stripped down, fully acoustic album featuring some of the most powerful female vocals you're ever likely to hear. If you like that, I would probably try Impossible Dream or 1000 Kisses next. Both have a fuller, more mellow sound, but still very beautiful.
If you'd like to just listen to a few Patty tracks first I'd recommend:
Moses, Every Little Bit (Living with Ghosts)
Florida, Useless Desire (Impossible Dream)
Making Pies, Long Ride Home (1000 Kisses)

Thanks for the advice. Amazon have a good deal going at the moment if you buy Cellar Door and Pixel Revolt together. I might take them up on it.

You have come to the right place my friend.
I love this guy, and just recently finished off his catalog...
I love almost everything he does, but Cellar Door is brutally honest, so you may want to start there. But my favorite I think is, Life And Death Of An American Fourtracker. Those are my 2 favorite, but honestly, all of them are really good, and totally worth getting.

Excellent, thanks so much. I think I'll start with Cellar Door and if I really like that, move on to Life and Death...
I'd never heard of him until last week, and then only because I've recently starting getting into all The Mountain Goats albums.

I've been considering getting into Will Oldham's stuff, and his contribution to the new Sun Kil Moon record has gotten me even more interested. I'm too lazy to look in the previous posts in this thread so my apologies if this has been asked.
So yeah, Will Oldham/Palace/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Where should I start?

I See A Darkness is probably the best place to start. That was the first Bonnie Billy solo album I bought and I really like it. Master And Everyone is also a very good Billy album. Master And Everyone is the more acoustic based, mellower album of the two.

She's looking for "dancy/rock" type music. What would you guys suggest to her?

Magnolia Electric Co. (and therefore Songs:Ohia as well) have some similarities. I know there's another musician/band that I think sounds quite a bit like him, but I can't think of who it is at the moment. If I remember I'll post it.

Maybe try Modest Mouse. I'm not that familiar with their back catalogue (I'm only newly converted), but I've been dancing around to We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank all week.

I'm a huge Red House Painters fan, Rose. You can't go wrong with their self titled album with the rollercoaster on the cover. It's fantastic.
And, yes, Mark was the lead singer/songwriter of the RHP.

Is that supposed to be where Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" character grew up?
Just heard "Wild is the Wind" by Nina Simone and loved it. What album should I start with?
The 2003 anthology from RCA includes that track and probably cuts the widest swath when it comes to her career. I'm relatively new to her & by no means an expert but Nina Simone and Piano! is my favorite record, although many apparently find it too experimental. Also check your PMs for optional links to a couple tracks I think are brilliant but left off what I've mentioned...that is if you're still interested or unsatiated after all this time. :)

Since I made that post about Nina I've bought the Gold double disc compilation so I'm more familiar with her work now than I was back then. I think I'm going to order her album Wild Is the Wind, but that Nina Simone and Piano! album sounds interesting so I'll put it on my wishlist, too.

Hard Candy is quite unique in that it's all a bit too shiny and mellow. They've not really done much else like it.
I would recommend either their debut, August & Everything After, for the same kind of mellowness but it's a lot rougher. Or their second effort, Recovering The Satellites, for something a tad heavier.

Agreed. August & Everything after is still easily the best thing they have ever done. Recovering the Satellites has its moments too. Both are far better albums than Hard Candy, imo. If you find yourself really enjoying their rock tracks, Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings has a few good guitar heavy songs.

aahhhh Mos, Black on Both Sides is definitely the best starting point, it just grabs hold of the room, it demands your attention. afterwards, a lot of fans are divided between which album is good and which isn't, i am quite find of the New Danger and while True Magic has its stellar moments, I would rate it at the bottom. Black Star is simply just awesome.
if you are interested in hiphop, i must say as cliche choicesas they may be Nas - Illmatic is dope all around, ...and you can't have a hiphop discussion w/o WuTang's - enter the wutang (36chambers).
