I love my alt-country/folk/whatever but i got through high school/late teens on a lot of metal. I know Ryan had a similiar music upbringing so i thought it would be relevant. I first got into christian hardcore like norma jean and zao..despite me not being christian in the least. That was when I was about 15..now a few years later(22) I am in love with Black Sabbath and the numerous bands that have carried on the sound. Sleep from the 90's is probly my favorite....than more recent bands like, the sword, saviours, Black Mountain, OM, Witch, High on Fire, the list could go on. I recommend people check out those bands on myspace for some real good music. Anyway if anyone can relate I find it incredibly hard to talk about music with people because my favorite genres are good country and stoner/doom metal. I like a lot of stuff in between but those are by far my favorite. discuss!

I've tempted to make a thread like this. :rock
Like Wok said, I'm also a closet metalhead.
I got really, really into Sabbath about a year ago and since then, I've really gotten into Slayer, Lamb Of God, Emperor, Celtic Frost, Dio, and Voivod.
And I'll definitely look into those bands.

I also highly reccomend The Sword and High On Fire.
Also,
pretty much anything by Sunn 0)))
(edit: it's kind of like a metal version of Godspeed! You Black Emperor)
and...
Goatsnake's "Flower of Disease" album.

I think it's really narrow-minded to only ever listen to one genre of music. How boring is that?! In my experience the most interesting people listen to an ecclectic mix. My iPod contains a crazy mix of rock, metal, classic country, alt-county and some wacky stuff too. Play air guitar, head-bang, 2-step. Why not? I love it.

Believe me, I tried to state I was not narrow minded, I like a very eccletic mix of music. I was just stating those are my favorite, and my point was that the distance between my two favorite genre's made it hard to converse with people about music. Although, I must admit I usually converse with people who do not get the polarization of my musical spectrum...which I guess leads me back to my original point that its hard to converse with people about music when being honest about my favorite genres. I like my 2 favorite genres and everything in between from good hip hop, mos def. Kool Keith, MF Doom, etc. to the stones, beatles, kinks, etc. , to Ryan, to Black Sabbath and the like. I often come off as a music snob, which I can accept. but my snobbishness encompasses almost every genre out there..if that makes any sense. Which I think I have some supporters in the majority of responses.

I used to listen to a lot of metal when I was a teen, not quite as much now though. Every now & again but that's about it.
Dan from Zao is actually my husband's tattoo artist now though. He's a super nice guy.

I'm sorry if I came across as calling you narrow minded. What I meant was that I think you are probably really interesting because you are open minded and enjoy such a range of music. It's those other folks that I think are narrow minded. The folks that think something is wrong with a person if they listen to anything other than say death metal or maybe country.

Check out The Sound of Urchin. Not EXACTLY your typical metal band, but they rock. Hard.

I totally just performed a Satanic ritual to resurrect this thread. :rock
So, recently, I've really been getting into metal - specifically Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian. Was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations for similar bands. Thanks. :)

If you want some good myth metal, The Sword is where it's at.
Not fast like Maden, but heavier than Maiden could ever have hoped to be.

Maybe not in the UK.
They're on a small indie label.
But you can preview some tracks on their Myspace (www.myspace.com/thesword). I highly reccomend Freya.

And I just found out they're gonna be back in MPLS on Dec. 15th.
I am so there.

Hmm, I don't listen to a lot of power metal, but I'd say DragonForce or Symphony X. Sorry I don't really know much more than them.

Ok, no worries. Thanks. :D
What about new wave British stuff? I have Number of the Beast from Maiden and Sad Wings of Destiny from Judas Priest. I really dig both. I also checked out your recommendations earlier but I couldn't really find anything by them. Are there other good albumns fro Maiden and Judas Priest I should look out for?

I've only got Number of the Beast, but I've heard that Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and Powerslave are both great records.
