What if Jeff Buckley was still alive? Would he be making relevant music or would he be a thing of the past?
What if The Smiths went on a reunion tour? Would they be a joke, or would they have success like the Police reunion tour?
What if every cd had a "name your own price" like the new Radiohead cd? Would bands make any money off of cd sales?
What if John Lennon was still alive? Would he still be making music?
What if you could raise one musician from the dead; who would you choose?

good questions
cant stand jeff buckley's music, so i'll pass on that one
the smiths would never ever be regarded as a joke. no one laughs at morrissey, and no one laughs at johnny marr when he's playing with modest mouse. cynics would state that theyre only doing it for the money, but that would probably be as bad as it would be. if my understanding of the smiths is correct then a reunion is never going to happen anyhow.
i dont think band will make more money off cd sales if people choose the price, but maybe in the long run, with live shows ect...their income wont really be affected. at least fans have more choice.
lennon may have dabbled deeper into politics as he got older, who knows...though i find it hard to believe that musicians could ever just STOP making music
and i would most definitely bring back Kurt Cobain. rumour has it that he was just about to break up nirvana before he died and go solo...so id love to hear the kind of stuff he could have written

Good questions. :upyours
What if Jeff Buckley was still alive? Would he be making relevant music or would he be a thing of the past?
I think he'd absolutely be making relevant music.
What if The Smiths went on a reunion tour? Would they be a joke, or would they have success like the Police reunion tour?
No way would they be joke. I also think it would be hugely successful - but it'll never happen. Which is for the best really, imo. Reunion tours are always a little bit weird.
What if every cd had a "name your own price" like the new Radiohead cd? Would bands make any money off of cd sales?
Yeah, I think they would, although I don't think anyone would be getting rich that way. For an already well established and popular band, I think they'd do ok. As it stands now, bands don't make all that much on album sales unless they sell a ton of albums. Plus, the people who would choose to pay nothing, would most likely be the ones downloading it for free anyway.
What if John Lennon was still alive? Would he still be making music?
Definitely, I'd say. Like Libertine said, I find it hard to believe most musicians would ever stop creating. It's in the blood, I think.
What if you could raise one musician from the dead; who would you choose?
Jeff Buckley. He was way too young and had so much potential.

hmm, this is interesting...
Jeff Buckley - yes I think he would certainly be making music if he were still alive. I like foggy's description, "it's in the blood." I don't think he'd ever be huge, but I think he'd be doing well.
Reunion tour - of course it would be successful! Those that knew them when they first started would want to be able to see it again, and those of us who are younger, would want to be able to see it at all. I think it would be odd if they did it though. It just seems like it would go against so much of what Morrissey has always said.
Name your own price - I think this is a great idea & I think bands would do just fine with it. People who may be worried about not liking it & not wanting to pay much for it can just wait a couple days & read reviews of a variety of people (rather then people paid to write reviews) and make the choice then. Plus, I'd like to think that people aren't that selfish to completely rip artists off. I've never been a big downloader (well, I was very, very much against it for a long time) and it wasn't until recently that I even started downloading some of the live Ryan stuff. I figure if he doesn't mind & it's not something he's losing money on, then it's alright. Artists that I like a lot, I want to support, after all I want them to be able to release more music, don't I?
John Lennon - if he were still alive he'd certainly be making music. Who knows what kind he'd be making at this point, but he'd be doing something I'm sure.
Usually I always say I wouldn't bring anyone back from the dead because, well, that's just weird. But if I had to choose, I'd probably go with John Lennon. It would be interesting to see what his music evolved into & with the state of the world today, who knows what else he could be lending his voice/face for.

thing of the past
What if The Smiths went on a reunion tour? Would they be a joke, or would they have success like the Police reunion tour?
huge success

at first no, but if they kept putting out quality, yes
What if John Lennon was still alive? Would he still be making music?
no
What if you could raise one musician from the dead; who would you choose?
hendrix, not really sure why but he was the first person who came to mind, or Jam Master Jay or Biggie Smalls

Absolutely still be making relevant music.
What if The Smiths went on a reunion tour? Would they be a joke, or would they have success like the Police reunion tour?
Either way, I would like to see it...so at least to me that means not a joke
What if every cd had a "name your own price" like the new Radiohead cd? Would bands make any money off of cd sales?
It's amazing how little of a musician's income actually comes from record sales anyway. The writers would be the ones affected because most pop artists don't write many their songs these days.
What if John Lennon was still alive? Would he still be making music?
Definitely, but don't think too badly of me for saying I was never a Lennon fan.
What if you could raise one musician from the dead; who would you choose?
Without a doubt, Gram Parsons

I think Jeff would still be making great music. He probably wouldn't be a huge star or anything, but I think he'd still be putting out records.
The Smiths tour would definitely be a success. Seeing that band live is a dream of mine that I don't expect to come true.
I doubt bands would see a big difference if everyone did the name your own price thing. The bigger bands would probably do pretty good, but most bands wouldn't be too affected by it. There would still be a lot of people who wouldn't pay anything for it.
I think John would still be making music, and I bet the Beatles would have gotten back together for a very brief time (a couple concerts, max.) because I know him and Paul were getting along better towards the end of his life and I think John's relationship with Ringo and George was doing fine too.
I would probably bring Jeff Buckley back from the dead, but I'd rather have Elliott Smith back. The reason I wouldn't choose Elliott is because since he (probably) killed himself once, he would probably do it again, and that would just be a waste of bringing back a talented artist.

I actually don't know. I'm sure he would have put out at least another 2 albums that would have been fantastic but after that it's hard to tell. He could have churned out classic after classic or he could have pulled a Led Zeppelin and turned to shit.
What if The Smiths went on a reunion tour? Would they be a joke, or would they have success like the Police reunion tour?
I consider the Police reunion tour a joke, so um... I'd like to say that a Smiths reunion tour wouldn't be a joke, but that's because I like them. It kind of depends on the nature of the reunion. I don't think it's as bad when a band gets back together and starts making new music (like Crowded House and Smashing Pumpkins, although I think Zeitgeist sucks, but I can't wait to see them)
What if every cd had a "name your own price" like the new Radiohead cd? Would bands make any money off of cd sales?
I don't think this would work if it was for all CD's. It could maybe be sustainable for large bands cause if they lose some money it doesn't matter as much as they make so much from touring. But then at the same time, the money's not really in albums for small bands anyway, so if everyone got their albums for free it would probably translate into more people coming to their gigs, which would bring in more money, so I just wrote a whole bunch but didn't really say anything. Sorry. :D
What if John Lennon was still alive? Would he still be making music?
Yes. Not sure how good it would be though.
What if you could raise one musician from the dead; who would you choose?
Jeff Buckley. Such a waste.

No I didn't. When did those come out?
I think it was around '95. When the 3 Anthology albums came out. Free as a Bird was the single from Anthology #1 and Real Love was the single from Anthology #2. Just the old stick an unreleased song from the vaults on so there's something new. Although I think from memory the Anthology albums had lots of new stuff, like alternate versions and things.
Free as a Bird had a snippet of John talking in reverse at the end of it too. Can't remember what it was that he said though.

mate...get a hold of them! two great beatles tracks. yeah as lukin said they came off the anthology in 1995. free as a bird came from an old lennon demo from the 70's (i think), basicaly paul, geroge and ringo put backing music to it and paul sang two verses on top of it and it formed into a beautiful song. noel gallagher recently voted it as his favourite beatles song.
real love is similar, but on this song they use the whole lennon demo and paul, george and ringo again added a backing track and backing vocals i think
if anything ive said is inaccurate feel free to corect me

Check out the 1988 Imagine Soundtrack to find the demo version of Real Love. I have it on cassette. It's much better than the Beatles version.

Johnny Marr just said in the NME last week, that he expects a reunion at some point.
I read that too, although he didn't say he expects it, just that he wouldn't rule it out. Here's the actual blurb:
The guitarist won't rule out reunion
Johnny Marr has said that The Smiths may reform.
Different members of the band have ruled out offers of reuniting over the years, with Morrissey most recently revealing that he turned down a near £40 million offer to tour again.
However, Marr has told BBC Five Live's Victoria Derbyshire that "stranger things have happened so, you know, who knows?"
He added: "It's no biggy. Maybe we will in 10 or 15 years time when we all need to for whatever reasons, but right now Morrissey is doing his thing and I'm doing mine, so that's the answer really."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've always thought it was possible that Moz and Johnny might work together again, but I can't see Morrissey ever working with Andy and Mike again, so it wouldn't be a proper Smiths reunion anyway.

The only question there that I really have an opinion on is that last one.
For me, that's a toss-up between Gram Parsons and Townes VanZandt

I love Townes and Gram, but in the end, GP died when he was 26, and Townes when he was fifty-something. GP (in my opinion) helped to spur a revolution, and Townes added onto an existing genre. I didn't have to think very long to decide GP didn't have his time to make the impact he could have made.

Yeah, I struggle with that one a lot. I get your point with Gram though. I often wonder if he would have kept producing the quality of work that he did if he had lived longer, though. Of course, that's the benefit we have with Townes, we know he cranked out wonderful, beautiful songs from start to finish. I adore Gram Parsons so please don't take this as me knocking him at all.
I truly do argue with myself a lot over the Townes vs. Gram thing. I think I've decided I'm just not going to pick a favorite.

Cool answers... Thanks...
Here are mine:
1. Yes. I think Jeff Buckley would still be making good music, but I doubt mindless masses would pay attention.
2. No, they wouldn't be a joke. A reunion w/ The Smiths is just a pipe dream of mine.
3. I don't know... But maybe it would hurt big time corporate record co's
4. I don't know why, but i have this vision of him becoming a recluse for 15 years, and then he would return like the bad-ass he was....
5. Michael Hutchins ... The new version on INXS sucks...
