From Popbitch:

How music promotion works - part 1

Radiohead dispatch their new album In Rainbows, on 10th December. Coincidentally an expensive box set and USB stick of all six of their previous albums is being released on the same day by EMI. Of course, this has nothing to do with Radiohead's decision not to re-sign with EMI at the end of their contract. The label wouldn't be running a spoiler against the band just because they went out on their own, would they?

There's a rumor that the band are pissed off about it. Started, I think, by the update to this boing boing post, which seems to be written by someone close to the band (their management, I would guess): http://www.boingboing.net/2007/11/05/radiohead-drmfree-bo.html

Yeah, that is pretty standard in my mind. That is why I love little labels so much, like Hush Records, Slowdance Records, Merge and Polyvinyl.

Sorry, shameless plug, I just love Slowdance and Hush...

hah, you have a point. but radiohead have been good to their record label in the past, must have sold shitloads of copies of albums...and then they do this.

and also, i dont know if anyone remembers how Silvertone treated the Stone Roses when they wanted to sign for Geffen; courtroom issues and so forth stopped them releasing anything for 4 years...when they were at their prime

To be fair, the Roses wanted out of their contract to sign a bigger one. Radiohead had fulfilled their obligation to EMI. So they were free to do what they wanted.

This happens all the time. When bands leave labels, Labels go about releasing what they like. Alot of the time though, they at least inform the band of their plans (Think Oasis' Stop the Clocks package - Oasis is done with Sony. Sony was going to release a hits album no matter what, but they at least went to Noel to work with the band on releasing it)

true again. i think noel originaly wanted to release a b-sides compilation from the year 2000 onwards, but from sony's point of view, a greatest hits package is much more financialy rewarding.

So, is this box set even going to have anything at all new in it to make it worth buying for the fans who already have the cds? Anything special at all? Because if not I don't really see the point in buying it.
