View Full Version : Changes to reputation points

There have been made a couple of changes made to the way the reputation point system operates.

1. After giving rep to a particular poster, you will now have to give rep out to two other posters before you can give the original recipient additional rep.

2. Posters were previously allowed to give out 20 lots of rep a day. This has been reduced to five.

The changes have been made in an effort to reduce the recent trend towards the over-use of rep points, of both the positive and negative variety.
While we obviously can't police why and to whom you give out rep, it would be appreciated if some were perhaps a little more thoughtful about the reasons they are handing out points.

Why only 5 points a day? That's pretty low.

Sydneyfan

As I understand it, it's not 5 rep points, it's five lots of rep points. In other words, you can give rep five times a day. Rob will correct me if that's wrong.

That makes more sense. Thanks C.

what's a "good reason" for rep? :\

There's really no correct answer to this. :) The changes were made because of a couple of factors - people giving out lots of random neg rep and people just continually bumping their friends for positive rep.
It's not a big deal - and rep points are meaningless at the end of the day anyhow. You can hand out rep based on whatever criteria you like, we are just trying to discourage some people from over-rewarding their buddies and others from overly punishing people they don't like.

:lol Damn you, I thought we had a deal :cya

I usually prefer to give my rep to people who have done something positive for the board- provided a setlist, an interesting article, made an excellent post etc.....but its really up to you.

Basically I agree with Syd - rep points shouldn't be just because you personally like or dislike someone should they? Whatever...

I never realized the reputation points were such a huge issue. :lol
I guess I don't think too much about who I give them too. If somebody does something I appreciate or makes me laugh or something, they get them. I'd never really thought about only giving them to people I like, because I don't think there's somebody here who I hate or anything.

Nope.

Someone saw fit to give me negative rep for listening to The Wallflowers earlier, so I support the new rep rules.

Is there maybe a way to not be able to give rep until a certain post count?
That and I don't think music preference is a rep issue, either.

I also am feeling very defensive right now for no reason. :D

Heh, that's exactly the sort of thing I wish people wouldn't do with their rep points. But of course, the only aspect of the system we can control is how often people can give out rep.

I'm not sure about the answer to your question, but the Admin would know. I'm not sure he's around this weekend, but I'll follow it up.

:lol Just don't let it bother you bro. I get negative rep. for the stupidest shit as well.

Thanks, C. :upyours

And it don't bother me, I just think it's fuckin' stupid that people see fit to give out negrepz for the shittiest reasons.
Yeah, I see records I don't like posted in the thread sometimes, but there are people that are taking the extra effort to actually give out negative rep based on it. And that's just stupid.
Some fuckin' people.

I don't like that idea. If someone is giving neg. rep with a low post count it's hardly going to change anything.

While we are on the subject - are people generally happy to have a rep points system on the board?

ewok.online

I like the rep system.
It shows new folks "who's who", if you will.
ANd I don't mean boasting or anything, just that there are some people who will probably help them out if they have questions or something.

Sydneyfan

Valid point. The downside I guess is that when you have some people who are continually giving out rep for trivial reasons, the number of points someone has might not necessarily be a true indication of anything.
Anyone else have any thoughts on rep points?

That is ridiculous, but I guess you can't very well control why somebody gives it out. I like that album, not enough for my top 5, but it is good. :upyours

It's more ridiculous when you get negative rep. for not worshiping Ryan which seems to happen quite a bit here. Rep. points tend to even out though so I don't see why we need any major changes.

I don't like it that much - but that's me and sorry Wok I couldn't disagree more with your post about "who's who" and who'll be helpful. I think that's crap if I'm honest. Having said that I wouldn't give out neg rep for that and in fact I think I've only used it once on someone who got right up my nose! Some folks just keep a lower profile than others but that doesn't mean they don't have anything to contribute. On that note - I think I'll just stfu.

Can anyone point me to a thread or FAQ (I looked but couldn't find) that just explains the basic rep system? Like how you give them or know if you've received them or from who? How do you know how many someone has? Just curious. Thanks!

Rob

To give rep for a post, you click on the checks and balances icon in the username section to the left of the post.

To see the rep you received you can click on the "User CP" link on the navbar.

The number of green (or in some cases red) boxes in the username section show how much rep you currently have.

Actually, one more question: Do you get 1 point for every time someone says they "approve" or "disapprove"? Or can someone give you more than one point? I'm just confused cause I'm really new here but my CP says I have 16 rep points already?

The amount of rep people are able to give out varies according to their post count and also the date they joined TBY. Some people can give out much more than one point, depending on how long they've been here and how much they've posted.

To see how many rep points people have you can check the stats section by scrolling down to the bottom of the main page. From there you can also change how many stats you can view from the Top 5 stats pull down menu.
