So, I'm flipping through the dial, and come across CNN as they were announcing the primary winners for N.H. John Edwards came in third in NH. Now, concerning politics zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...not really a fan of any of the candidates (I'm one of those independents) but as John Edwards was coming on to give his speech after coming in 3rd, they were playing "Firecracker."

I remember one of the previous times they were playing another Ryan tune, but I cant remember the song they used. I heard Obama is using U2, so I'm not sure whether John Edwards official political soundtrack is from the works of Ryan Adams...but he's been using his songs in his campaign.

I know the official soundtrack to my life is filled with Ryan Adams, even as I've been away from TBY again for a while, but if I was running, my political soundtrack would definitely have Ryan in it.

Just thought I'd throw that ryan politics tidbit out into the vast spectrum, to be hosed down with the sweet nectar of truth and information. :\ :D

Didn't Ryan send out an e-mail awhile back endorsing Ron Paul?

I can't see Ryan, who I assume, like most celebrities and music artists, is libertarian, endorsing a socialist like John Edwards.

This irritates me phenomenally. Why do I care? There's just something so disingenuous about John Edwards and having him co-opt what I consider really genuine music is so irritating. Like he couldn't possibly "get it", especially if he's playing it at political rallies (of course I'll still vote for the dweeb if he gets the nomination. :\ )

Edwards playing his music doesn't mean Ryan's endorsing him.

John Edwards is a socialist?

I apologize calling it an endorsement, just kind of trying to make the point of "why help someone I don't agree with". But upon thinking about it... Brooks and Dunn played concerts for George W. Bush all through his Presidential run, but I heard Barack Obama playing their "Only in America" song last night. Who knows, I guess if the price is right.

and yes: Edwards is a socialist. Invoking the rhetoric of class warfare worries me in a person.:downyours

Didn't Reagan use Springsteen's Born in the USA and Bruce got pretty annoyed about it? I thought I had heard that somewhere.

Yep, and I think Bruce actually stopped him from using it. It was pretty ironic that a conservative politician would want to use it really, considering the lyrics and message behind the song.

This is somewhat related to this thread.

Edwards' former running mate, John Kerry, endorsed Barack Obama today. That's gotta sting.

Yeah, I don't know whether Bruce actually stopped Reagan from using it or just spoke publicly about the real meaning of a song and that got back to Reagan's camp and they stopped using it. In any event, I don't believe the artist needs to be consulted or in agreement with a recorded song being as a candidate enters a room or appears at a rally. If they were to use a song in a political ad, however, that would require the artist's permission/endorsement.

Kirsten, you're right about them walking into a room, yes. But there's only a short list of songs in the public domain and a campaign wouldn't want to face the flak from an artist throwing a hissy fit about a song.

You know what song I'd like to hear a candidate walk out to? America, F**k Yeah! from the Team America soundtrack. That would be great.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of Ryan's music is available to whomever coughs up the dough. It is probably more likely, however, that the intern was charged with finding music that is inspiring and 'Merican on his/her Ipod and that no one gave it a second thought.

In my book a political rally or a candidate walking into room with a soundtrack, when televised, is a political advertisement. Think about footage of Reagan walking on stage to tens of thousands of cheering supporters while Born in the USA plays. If that ain't an ad for 80's conservatism I'll eat my hat. Especially if they If they just used the chorus as the soundtrack they were completetely misrepresenting the overtly political agenda of the song. I think the artist should have control over their work to stop this sort of thing.

Then again Firecracker is just a vibe song about being young and hedonsitic, not a message song like Born In The USA so I don't think it's that big deal. But if Ryan wanted to stop his message of boozing, womanising and meeting an early grav being e co-opted by clean livin Edwards then more power to him.

How awesome would it be for Edwards (or another candidate) to suddenly hear The Sadness blasting out during a campaign rally?

The answer is totally awesome.

When I said I don't believe the artist needs to be consulted or in agreement with a recorded song being as a candidate enters a room or appears at a rally I meant in the legal sense, not in a personal belief sort of way. As in it is my understanding that the candidate can use songs in this way, not that I personally think its ok or a good idea...

I think stickie is probably closest to how the song came to be used.

Yeah I meant in the legal sense too, I'd like politicians to be legally required to get an artists permission when using their music publicly during a campaign. That way the artist has a chance to decide whether he/she wants to be associated with the politician and their party. It just seems where and when an artists music can be used without their permission is becoming a bit of a grey area these days.
