It turns out Maxim reviewed the new Black Crowes album before advance copies had been sent out. Hee:
Hey Crowes, here's the bad news: There's an outstanding chance that Maxim review will be better than those from outlets that actually, ya know, hear the record. That will be embarrassing. Just a heads up.

I read about that yesterday, that's terrible! I can't believe the editor would let someone on their staff do it - and then when the public knows not agree that it was horrible. :downyours

The editor should have gone through the motions of feigning shock and outrage, and promising to look closely at the incident blah blah. And then done nothing, since it's obviously common editorial policy on that particular mag.
But I agree with BQ that he handled it really badly from a public relations point of view.

I guess they realized that they had no credibility to begin with, so there was no need trying to restore what was never there in the first place.

I just got this from perez:
Maxim magazine issued an apology to their readers. You know, horny straight dudes that don't like the pink background.
The mag fucked up and they're owning up to it!
A Maxim music critic gave the Black Crowes' new album War Paint a crappy review…despite the reviewer not even listening to the album!!!!
Shady!
That review rightfully peeved the former Mr. Kate Hudson and his band. They posted a statement on their site last week saying the Maxim writer could not have heard the entire album because advance copies weren't even available. The Crowes' manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an "educated guess."
WTF? An educated guess????
The mag has since issued the following statement:
"It is Maxim's editorial policy to assign star ratings only to those albums that have been heard in their entirety. Unfortunately, that policy was not followed in the March 2008 issue of our magazine and we apologize to our readers."
We hope Maxim's sister publication, Blender, doesn't do the same thing!

OK, as an old school Crowes fan, I have to give the album a decent review, Not bad, but not great. Some songs really sound great, and it is an enjoyable listen. But...it just doesn't touch me deep down inside like their earlier works, which is tough. Southern Harmony is (IMO) one of the best traditional r&r albums of the past 20-25 years, so how can they truly please me? Unlikely, but some tracks feel good. It is just the problem that the Crowes were never truly a blues band, or a pop band, or a love song band, which they have tried to be in various recordings. They were at their best when they were young and kicking ass, blending southern rock with inspired songwriting (sound familiar??) but I cannot call their latest effort a disappointment by any means.
New fans... well, check out their 1st, 2nd and 3rd albums. Old schoolies will find a few great tracks that are probably better live. I love this band and support them, but hope for better things in the future.
