Yeah, I never got around to it.
My English teacher in high school pretty much forced only Steinbeck upon us.

Wait, you mean it wasn't already in the curriculum?

I suddenly have a little more respect for my backwoods hick highschool.

Eh, I'm pretty sure we did Steinbeck instead of Fitzgerald in 11th grade. So many good books though, I wouldn't know what to pick if I was teaching American Lit. I personally like Steinbeck better, so it didn't bother me that much.

Nope. There was a fair bit of flexibility in the curriculum. I think we had to cover certain themes and it didn't really matter what texts we studied so long as they satisfied those criteria.

That's a really lovely book. If you enjoy it, I'd recommend A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth if you haven't already read it. Its very long, but well worth the effort.

The format is great. Since it's an "oral history", it's just a whole bok of quotes and stories about the 'Mats attributed to people.
Great way to do it, and obviously the stories are fucking insane/hilarious/depressing/empowering/embarrasing/stupid/fucked-up just like that 'Mats.

I joined a book club - I knew it was a mistake. Any book that is (a) recommended by Richard & Judy and (b) has "simply beautiful" on the cover inspires me not at all...:(

Just started reading Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie. It's terrific so far and the writing seems stronger than anything he has done in recent years.
