Them Crooked Vultures - Self Titled (Nov. 17, 2009)

Quote:
The eagerly-awaited debut album from super-group Them Crooked Vultures now has a release date. Go ahead and circle Nov. 17 on your calendars for the release of the band’s self-produced and self-titled debut.

Check below for the complete track list for Them Crooked Vultures.

The all-star rock group is made up of Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme; the Vultures recently performed at the Austin City Limits Festival and will begin a trek through Europe this December, followed by a tour of Australia and New Zealand in January.

“New Fang,” the first single from the album, hits radio next week.

The news of the forthcoming 13-track album has elicited tons of excitement, especially considering it was only a few months back that the super group unveiled themselves at the Lollapalooza after-show. The trio did sail off to Europe for a bunch of shows and just wrapped a short tour of the states last week in New York.

According to Rolling Stone, the 13 songs the band featured in their live shows also appear on Them Crooked Vultures, ‘including opening track “No One Loves Me & Neither Do I.”’

About that last show at the Roseland Ballroom in New York last week, the NY Times wrote:

That their output delivers a punch to the gut can only be seen as the fulfillment of a promise. The band doesn’t feel like naked derivation, but its parentage is hammered home with every fat and bruising riff.

Them Crooked Vultures / track list:

* 1. No One Loves Me & Neither Do I
* 2. Mind Eraser, No Chaser
* 3. New Fang
* 4. Dead End Friends
* 5. Elephants
* 6. Scumbag Blues
* 7. Bandoliers
* 8. Reptiles
* 9. Interlude With Ludes
* 10. Warsaw or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up
* 11. Caligulove
* 12. Gunman
* 13. Spinning In Daffodils

I think I read that it's called Deserve now, instead of being self-titled, but the release date is the same.

Well I'm glad it's coming out before I see them, so I'll actually know the tunes by the time the show comes around.

Here's a teaser snippet they posted a while back - I think it probably gives a pretty decent idea about how the album's going to sound.

Also (apparently) higher quality version here: http://soundcloud.com/crookedvultures/new-fang - still sounds like mud on my shitty speakers.

Dave Grohl, I officially forgive you for the past couple Foo records.

Re: Them Crooked Vultures - Self Titled (Nov. 17, 2009)

I've heard a lot of comparisons of Josh Homme's playing to Jimmy Page. I'm not hearing it. The riffs are pretty Zep, but the solos are total QOTSA. Not a bad thing, but throwing around Jimmy references is a bit of a misnomer.

Dave and John Paul Jones, however, totally have the Zep thing going on.

Re: Them Crooked Vultures - Self Titled (Nov. 17, 2009)

Yeah, this is Zep 2009.

I've given this a few more listens. I stand by my original assessment. It rocks. But its pretty forgettable.

Re: Them Crooked Vultures - Self Titled (Nov. 17, 2009)

Totally. I mean, it's a supergroup. Half the reason for one is hero worship of the people in the band.

Rocks hard, but sometimes I find myself wishing the song was over a little quicker.

Re: Them Crooked Vultures - Self Titled (Nov. 17, 2009)

The more I listen to it, the more I love it. And yeah, it is definitely more Josh than anything else. It's like Dave and JPJ are guest starring on the greatest QOTSA album ever.
