I'd want to check this out. UT press... not bad. I've always wanted to read an RA book, but what I've seen have been strange online self published things.

No, it's just pieced together from interviews and other material readily available. It's a cash grab.

Even from U of T press? I thought that was an academic outfit.

I hadn't gotten wind of this before now, so I'm going share Rob's skepticism, until proven otherwise.

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

Well, I understand Rob's skepticism, because this is, like, the fourth time we've heard about something like this. In previous books it was all just copied and pasted from interviews on the internet. One was just complied of wikipedia entries. I'll see if I can find the links to the old threads.

Menconi draws on early interviews with Adams, conversations with people close to him, and Adams's extensive online postings to capture the creative ferment that produced some of Adams's best music
It'll be a very coherent book in that case.

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

The author's at least got a little bit of cred:

Quote:
David Menconi has been the music critic at the Raleigh News & Observer since 1991, and he misses the days when it was possible to see Whiskeytown play in Raleigh every week. His writing has also appeared in Spin, Billboard, the New York Times, and a host of publications that regrettably no longer exist. Chief among the latter is No Depression magazine, for which he was a contributing editor. His byline appeared in every issue except one during the magazine's thirteen-year run.

For a singer and musician that I really like, I have to say I know very little of substance about RA that I haven't gleaned from 10 years of crazy intermittent blog and forum posts by him, and I'm not sure how substantial that is anyway. Might be a cool read. I dig the title at least.

Hey, no offense, but aren't a lot of biographies "pieced together from interviews and other material readily available"? The author of this book covered and interviewed Ryan/Whiskeytown--and the people close to Ryan/Whiskeytown--for a number of years; for the Raleigh News & Observer, No Depression, and other publications. A lot of the interviews it draws from are interviews the writer conducted with Ryan and others. Did you read the excerpts from the book? http://www.utexas.edu/utpress/excerpts/exmenrya.html

In any case, read it or don't read it. But for you to call it a "cash grab" I think is very unfair.

Sorry for starting the other thread. It was an honest mistake. I won't post anything more about it. Peace.

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

Yeah, I'll probably check it out and report back. While some University Press books are published on a proposal basis and end up sucking, UT Press bears the standard there should be a formal peer review process on the content.

Most of the texts people have announced here have been cut n' paste jobs, so I'm not surprised or troubled by the responses.

While this may be the same with a better cover, I suspect it will be worth reading. It may be speculative and often with University titles, bear more of the author's theoretical frame work choices and readings more than fact or reporting. This can be excellent or annoying, but I'll bite and let you know.

It's well written...structured very academically but I think it reads quick. I thought this part was especially meta:

"In a lot of ways, Ryan himself is the best song he's ever written. And a lot of his other songs are pretty great, too."

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

I was quick to judge. I've seen "unauthorized biographies" about RA pop up on Amazon before, and figured this one was along the same lines.

Now I see that this one has more credibility, my apologies.

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

Couple of points: The author, David Menconi, is as well-respected as any music writer in the country. He's known as being fair, thorough and balanced. He's also known as the guy who pretty much got RA's career off the ground by paying attention to his music in Raleigh when virtually no one else was. I've read the book and it's excellent. Very well-reported and reeks of authenticity. So-called unauthorized biographies can vary wildly. Some are sloppy, superficial pieces of junk cranked out for a quick buck. On the other hand, some, like this one, are supported by unquestionably legitimate sources (in this case the University of Texas Press), are done with care and purposed and intended to inform. Finally, the notion that Mr. Menconi will make a great deal of money on this project is absurd. I know: I'm also a writer. Books like this one are done out of passion and a sense of duty, not for the money. I imagine the writer actually lost money if you consider the time put into the book versus any payback from the publisher. So give the book a fair read and the writer a break.

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

I'm sure dude's a great writer. And you guys can all come here and make accounts to say we're assholes. But to put it in perspective, we see these types of threads more than once, and most the time they're total crap.

http://www.tobeyoung.org/showthread.php?p=690897
http://www.tobeyoung.org/showthread.php?t=5245
http://www.tobeyoung.org/showthread.php?t=22932

So yeah, I think some may be a little skeptical at first. But after the initial announcements of 'shameless plug,' most seemed to agree to give it a chance. Calm down, haters.

Re: New Biography: Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown

Worst two TBY first impressions you can make:

1. Sign up and immediately start asking for downloads and recordings (in fact, don't ask for them ever!)
2. Sign up and immediately start plugging a product (whether it be something commercial or simply plugging your own music).

Ultimately, it's a discussion board and TBY appreciates active participants who chime in on the threads (even if it's low brow potty talk). We sign up and even donate so we don't have to look at ads. Most who inform us about a new thing never use the account again.

Rest assured, the legitimately published book will have many readers here and a fair & honest assessment. This would still be true even had 3+ new user hadn't signed up to tell us about it. We make the rounds, research wise, here on all things RA quite efficiently...
