Its different, but still great. hes more introspective and in touch with deep shit than before. but hes still great.

If he can write vampires 10+ years after Decoration Day, guys still got it. easily.

Re: The Jason Isbell Thread

i don't think his writing has wavered at all. his output has been outstanding post sobriety. in fact, i think it is better.

songs like elephant, speed trap town and maybe it's time are proof...also, just when you think love songs are becoming stale and cliche, he fucking writes "if we were vampires"

Re: The Jason Isbell Thread

I think his output has been a lot more consistent since being sober. I love his pre-sober stuff but I also love his post-sober stuff just as much. He's grown as an artist and can't blame him for making himself better. Seeing him live and hearing the 400 unit, you can tell they really work hard at being a tight band. I don't think the band would have lasted this long had he not gotten sober.

Like Balvenie stated, Elephant, Speed Trap Town, Yvette, those songs are hands down masterpieces.

Isbell/400 Unit are hitting the road in June for tour with... Father John Misty!

Very excited about this. Might have to hit the Greek in Berkeley.

Have you seen him live? I understand FJM isn’t for everyone, but if you go in with an open mind I’d bet you’d be impressed by his performance.

I'll be curious to hear your thoughts afterwards. His stage presence isn't for everyone either, but the dude can sing and his band is very good.

I'm excited for this tour. Just got tickets for Berkeley.

I agree. For me, the majority of Southeastern is touched-by-the-hand-of-God phenomenal. The two subsequent records each have a beautiful, emotional gut punch song--"Speed Trap Town" and "If We Were Vampires--a few other good songs, and then the rest I skip over.

FJM was pretty good guys. horn section was outstanding. still get pretty much zero out his lyrics but he lays a nice groove on stage for sure.

Nice

I had a blast at the Cal show.

Super cool to hear Danko/Manuel again (The Band is always #1 for me). I was not expecting that at all and it was great.

FJM was solid. My brother went to the show in Milwaukee and FJM opened for Isbell. He said that worked better for the crowd there. It felt like an even 50/50 split in Berkeley and FJM closed. I just wish they had played a song together.

THat's really cool! I'd love to get out to the Ryman to see Jason. Maybe next time.

I get another show at Red Rocks in September with David Crosby opening. That should be fun.

I should count it up but I've seen Jason a lot over the years. Theatres, festivals, fairs, etc. across Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin now California and Colorado. It's been very fun watching him blow up. Much deserved.
