Re: Documentary Recommendations
I mentioned this in the horror thread, but Room 237, the doc about Kubrick's The Shining was really fun to watch. I hadn't seen the film in years, but the insights about the film are really engaging and creepy in their own right.

One I highly recommend is The Act Of Killing, a hot favourite for an Oscar this year. The film examines the massacre of approx. 1 million people during the Communists purges in Indonesia is the mid-1960's. It's also the most truly original doco I think I"ve ever seen - several men who cheerfully admit to being paid to kill their fellow citizens during the purges are invited to make a film about their experiences using any genre they choose. The results are surreal and often darkly comic; and it becomes clear that the film-maker is using the artifice of theatre to reveal deeper truths. The film feels a little manipulative and staged at times, and at 3 hours is a little too long - but it's certainly a must-see for documentary lovers. |

Re: Documentary Recommendations
So sad. It's a pity that the proceeds from the house sale can't be directed towards a charity or something.......the relatives certainly don't deserve it.
I used to work in Fouveaux Street Surry Hills, which is just a block from Kippax Street. The article is right about the setting - there are a lot of hostels, cheap rentals and back-packer accommodation. It's also semi-industrial and dominated by clothing factories and fashion design warehouses. I can see how it's an easy area to just go unnoticed, but that doesn't really excuse the family doing nothing for eight years. |

Re: Documentary Recommendations
If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend Searching for Sugar Man. It's a wonderful exploration into a musician's life and how one man truly can make a difference given the opportunity.
And speaking of one man, unfortunately, the director of this film died today in Sweden. He was 36.

Re: Documentary Recommendations
In my biological anthropology seminar we watched the first two parts of an on going documentary series. The first one was called 7 Up. Basically it checks in with the same British children (now adults) every 7 years to see how their lives are going and what they think of the world. They're all on Netflix up to 56 Up I believe. It was pretty interesting.

Has anyone mentioned The Jinx in here yet?
Man, I fell deep into the Robert Durst rabbit hole after watching it. Shit is crazy.

Re: Documentary Recommendations
This American Experience episode aired last week, in coordination with the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. They always do especially great documentaries, and this one was no exception. Even Way (who hates all of the war documentaries I watch) was hooked into this one. It's on the PBS app on Apple TV, if you have that.

The Last Days in Vietnam documentary was so enthralling. The whole time I kept thinking, "I HAD NO IDEA!"

Watch the Great War documentary on youtube, all the episodes seem to be on there. Highly recommend it. A lot of the combat footage is from the 1920's, see if you can spot the differences!

Re: Documentary Recommendations
Yeah! I'd never heard of it before my class. I went home and watched 21 Up and started 28 Up but was confused because the beginning of it is 7 Up all over again and then 28 starts afterwards..but I didn't realize that and thought Netflix had messed up so I skipped ahead to 35 Up. When the semester ends I might just binge watch all of them from the beginning.

Re: Documentary Recommendations
Same here. I was flipping through the channels one day and came across it, this was about 6yrs ago. Living in Austin, I was familiar with the Hi How Are You sign, but didn't have a clue that Daniel Johnston was such a great artist and musician. I was lucky enough to meet him one yr while I was working the ACL festival.
