Re: Canada

We really loved it and have wanted to go back since. We spent time in Downtown Montreal visiting museums and shopping. There is a really cool underground shopping village (I guess you'd call it) that we walked through. Lot's of nice restaurants. It's really a great city. We went to Old Montreal too, a beautiful old historic place.

Re: Canada

My folks took us on a great roadtrip once: stopped at Niagara Falls on your side, then stayed in Windsor at a B & B before driving through Toronto towards Detroit. My only souvenir of the trip was a Morrissey 12" (possibly "Everyday is Like Sunday", which got warped from the scalding, hot car trunk).

Some patriotic rap that's also educational! Did you know that basketball was invented by a Canadian?

Re: Canada

I love how this shows up as a national news story on CBC's website:

Quote:
Tim Hortons bans complaining customer

A coffee enthusiast in St. Andrews, N.B., has learned the customer may not always be right.

After complaining three times about "burnt" decaffeinated coffee at the local Tim Hortons, Jimmy Craig is now banned for life from that outlet and the one in nearby St. Stephen.

"It was like brown, burnt water," said Craig. "I almost, you know, got sick in the sink."

Craig said he voiced his concerns to the store manager and corporate office, then got a meeting with the owner, Edwin Dow.

That's when Dow served Craig with a letter banning him under the province's trespass act.

'I don't see this is a way to treat people. Whatever happened to the customer is always right?'—Jimmy Craig, banned customer
"I was baffled," said Craig. "It didn't make any sense at all. All I wanted to do was bring it to his attention that there was a problem with the consistency of his product.

Dow contends his staff went the extra mile to satisfy Craig, brewing fresh pots of decaf on request.

He said Craig was upsetting his staff and he was tired of his complaints, so he banned him.

Craig has contacted a lawyer to try to get the ban overturned.

Meanwhile, he can only return to the Tim Hortons if he's on the job as a paramedic, responding to a medical emergency.

So he's brewing his own coffee at home, which, he said, is cheaper and always fresh.

I've just had my 2 year working holiday visa approved. So Canadians, I'm coming to get cha.

Any tips or inside information (like how to avoid Avril Lavigne) would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Canada

What made you decide on Calgary? It's a nice city, but most people who want to come to Canada pick Vancouver, Montreal or Toronto.

What sort of stuff do you like to do/want to do?

my hatred of canada is not exclusive.

i can go on about how much i hate san antonio.

Where did you go? If they somehow figured out you were American, it'd very likely explain the rudeness. I've never noticed the staring, but I might've just been staring at someone else too much, so I didn't notice being stared at.

Yeah, I'm not sure how many Cubans are are Canada. A decent amount from Haiti and elsewhere in the West Indies, but not so much from Cuba. At least as far as I know (I've never ventured east of Northern Ontario).

Re: Canada

Most people have been quite nice to me in Canada so far. I get the occasional "You're an American? " (said with a sneer and all over judgment from what they've seen on tv) And when that happens I shoot them down with laser beams from my eyes and they succumb to the american power inside of me.

I don't think there were very many in Montreal even though it's a very multicultural city.

Re: Canada

I think it's the shock of 95% of Canada that love the dreck that is Tim Hortons coffee (I'm in the 5%). Also the fact that Tim Hortons has positioned it self as a Canadian institution so the national broadcaster feels obligated to run this story.
