Re: Movie Recommendations

Yeah, I love Shopgirl. I need to buy it. I've already rented it twice. The music is good, and I will always have a place in my little heart for it because I discovered the Volebeats through that movie. They rule.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Some early indicators for Oscar nominations this year. I'm hoping to see Babel this week.

Quote:
VETERAN film-maker Martin Scorsese and Briton Stephen Frears have been named among the nominees for the Directors Guild of America awards, a key Oscars indicator.

Scorsese won a nod for his bloody crime thriller "The Departed'' while Frears was nominated for "The Queen,'' the critically acclaimed drama set in the days following the 1997 death of Princess Diana.

Other nominees for the DGA prize for outstanding directorial achievement in 2006 were Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Babel'' and Bill Condon for the musical "Dreamgirls.''

There was also a joint nomination for Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the makers of smash-hit independent comedy "Little Miss Sunshine.''

"Each of these five nominees has demonstrated a remarkable ability to blend craft and vision in the pursuit of masterful storytelling,'' DGA president Michael Apted said.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on February 3.

The DGA award has been one of the movie industry's most accurate indicators for who will win the best director Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Fifty-one out of fifty-seven times since the DGA Award's inception in 1949, the winner has gone on to take the Academy Award for best director.

Just got back from seeing The Pursuit of Happyness...... I was actually surprised at how good this is. I expected it to be one of those corny "rags to riches" tearjerkers, and while there is an element of that in the story; it's actually quite an intelligent look at poverty and social discrimination.
Will Smith is terrific.

I thought that that was excellent....until it fulfilled the "rag to riches" thing at the end with the corny celebrations of clapping in the street.....but other than that one scene, it was excellent...

Re: Movie Recommendations

I've seen the trailer and it looks like a good film. Do you suppose it's an Oscar contender?
The kid who plays Will Smith's onscreen son is actually his real life son.

I think it could be and I'm pretty sure Will Smith has a good chance of being nominated for Best Actor. It's that kind of "playing against type" dramatic role the Oscar judges always seem to love. His son is gorgeous and manages to be cute without being cloying.

Yes I agree, a couple of times it did start to stray into being overly sentimental, but overall it wasn't nearly as corny as I thought it was going to be. The credits said "inspired by a true story".... I wonder how much of it was fact? It seems like a remarkable story if it's true.

Re: Movie Recommendations

The man the movie was based was on Oprah a few months back along with Will and Will's son to promote the movie. According to what he said, the movie was quite faithful to his story. Well, the major bits at least.

Then I'm really impressed. What he achieved was quite remarkable and he overcame some really overwhelming hurdles. Thanks P.

Re: Movie Recommendations

The theater up the street from my house added "the Oscar contenders" this weekend.

Pan's Labyrinth
Notes on a Scandal
Children of Men
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Queen
The Last King of Scotland

Anyone seen any of these?

disappointing

decent flick, but plays like a standard thriller - not sure what all the hype is about.

I've seen the ads for it and I figured his accent would be horrible. I don't think I could sit thru that guy doing a bad accent for 2 hours.

Re: Movie Recommendations

`Instinct,' `Little Man' lead Razzies

By DAVID GERMAIN
AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- At least someone was happy Sharon Stone reprised her notorious femme-fatale role with "Basic Instinct 2."

The box-office bomb received seven nominations Monday for the Razzie Awards that mock the bottom of Hollywood's barrel, among them worst picture and worst actress of the year.

Also receiving seven nominations was the Wayans brothers comedy "Little Man," about a thief posing as a baby, including worst picture and director for Keenen Ivory Wayans.

Shawn and Marlon Wayans shared a worst-actor nomination, while sisters Hilary and Haylie Duff shared a worst-actress nomination for "Material Girls."

"We stuck the siblings together to allow room for more dreck," said Razzies founder John Wilson.

The other worst-picture nominees were the fantasies "BloodRayne" and "Lady in the Water" and the thriller "The Wicker Man."

Winners will be announced Feb. 24, the day before the Academy Awards.

Joining Stone and the Duffs in the worst-actress category were Lindsay Lohan for "Just My Luck," Kristanna Loken for "BloodRayne" and Jessica Simpson for "Employee of the Month."

Stone previously won a Razzie as worst-actress for 1994's "The Specialist" and "Intersection."

"She's what we call a Razzie repeat offender. Perhaps even a recidivist," Wilson said.

"Basic Instinct 2" also had a nomination for worst screen couple for Stone's "lopsided breasts." Also nominated were co-star David Thewlis for worst supporting actor and the movie's director, Michael Caton-Jones.

Along with the Wayans, "Little Man" co-star Rob Schneider had a worst-actor nomination. The other nominees were Tim Allen for "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause," "The Shaggy Dog" and "Zoom"; Nicolas Cage for "The Wicker Man"; and Larry the Cable Guy for "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector."

The Razzies added a new category, worst excuse for family entertainment. The nominees were "Deck the Halls," "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties," "RV," "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" and "The Shaggy Dog."

The big surprise for Wilson was that all-time Razzies champ Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky Balboa" was not nominated. Stallone, who has 30 Razzie nominations and 10 wins, surprised many skeptics by delivering a sequel that was well received by audiences and earned better-than-expected reviews.

"At the first of the year, you could not have convinced me it wasn't going to be a Razzie contender," Wilson said. "I would like to publicly say that Stallone has made a good movie."

The Wicker Man is one of the worst big-budget films I have seen for quite a while. Nicolas Cage wears a toupee that looks like a mammal has been stapled to his head. He punches several angry lesbians in the face while wearing a bear suit. True story. It's so bad it's funny in places.

Kind of strange how Sharon Stone could be so good in Basic Instinct 1 and Casino, and so bad in those other movies.
