Re: Documentary Recommendations

I watched Best Of Enemies over the weekend. It's based on the televised debates between William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal that aired on ABC during the 1968 Republican and Democratic conventions. It's very interesting, in that it really seemed to predate the talking heads yelling at each other on cable news these days. It's also a great slice of how nuts that year was.

Re: Documentary Recommendations

talhotblond is pretty compelling. It's a true story of what can happen when someone utterly loses themselves in an internet fantasy world. Available on Netflix.

Re: Documentary Recommendations

Gates of Heaven is a real time capsule. I've had affection for a few animals, but not quite as much as some of these people.

The Hunting Ground was disturbing, but not entirely surprising. Money and apathy seem to go hand in hand.

Re: Documentary Recommendations

Fascinating examination of the issues of transgender children, and the politics surrounding the subject. Apparently this documentary upset a lot of LGBT activists, which is probably indicative of how volatile the whole subject is. To me, it seemed pretty even handed and considered both sides of the argument.

Re: Documentary Recommendations

This was pretty good. Random thoughts:

- Odd question, but do you think either one of the two girls is more to "blame" than the other?

- I was impressed with some of the fan-made Slenderman content they showed (though of course, some from younger kids was also terrible lol)

- Kinda feels like they rushed this to capitalize on the whole Serial/The Jinx/Making a Murderer craze, right? The trial hasn't even started yet, so it's incomplete. And the amateur aspect of all the expert interviews via skype with their iphone earbuds in was weird (Related: Also weird how this happened in Waukesha)

Love spooky docs.

But yeah it's weird to do a doc before the trial.

Haha yeah, that was a bit ridiculous even for a grandmother sticking up for her own. They DID try to kill a girl for crying out loud.
