Re: Great Photos

The world 50 years ago (1961).

Spoiler:

Quote:
Caption from 1961: TV viewers of the 1970s will see their programs on sets quite different from today's, if designs now being worked out are developed. At the Home Furnishings Market in Chicago, Illinois, on June 21, 1961, a thin TV screen is a feature of this design model. Another feature is an automatic timing device which would record TV programs during the viewers' absence to be played back later. The 32x22-inch color screen is four inches thick.

The Queen and Phil are here on a royal visit at the moment. They landed in Canberra yesterday and I thought some of the shots of the crowd waiting along the roadside and published in The Canberra Times were lovely.

Remarkable portraits of dogs on death row by Taiwanese photographer Yun-Fei Tou, taken just minutes before they are killed. Very powerful and sad.

And the winner in the news photography category is equally remarkable. Taken at the scene of a suicide bombing in Kabul last year.

A word of warning; the photo is very graphic.

Re: Great Photos

So a few years ago while in college I heard a speech by Ashley Gilbertson, who did photojournalism of Iraq and Afghanistan, and also about the PTSD associated with the troops when they came home. His speech basically had everyone in the room in tears.

I've got a copy of the podcast if anyone is interested, PM me. One of the better speeches I ever saw.

Here is his website: http://www.ashleygilbertson.com/index.php

Here's a youtube video I'm kind of working through:

The world 50 years ago, in 1962: http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2...n-1962/100296/

Spoiler:
Dr. John W. Mauchly, inventor of some of the original room-size electronic computers, poses in Washington, DC, on November 2, 1962 with one the size of a suitcase after addressing a meeting of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers. He now is working on a pocket variety which, he says, may eliminate the housewife's weekly shopping list and the chore of filling it by hand. He predicted everyone will be walking around with his own personalized computer within a decade. (AP Photo/Byron Rollins)

U.S. President John F. Kennedy speaks before reporters during a televised speech to the nation about the strategic blockade of Cuba, and his warning to the Soviet Union about missile sanctions, during the Cuban missile crisis, on October 24, 1962 in Washington, DC. (Getty Images)

An African American and a white girl study a sign in the integrated Long Island community of Lakeview, New York, on April 1962. It reads "Negroes! This community could become another ghetto. You owe it to your 'family' to buy in another community." The sign was an attempt to keep African Americans from exceeding the number of whites who want to live in an integrated town. (AP Photo)
