Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

The latest is that a decorated ex soldier who served in Afghanistan has had his visa revoked and put in detention because he's a member of a motorcycle gang. He has no convictions for anything and was even a bodyguard for Key when he visited Afghanistan. The opposition are on his case for being gutless and not standing up to Turnbull more. To which he replied that they are supporting rapists. That did not go down well at all as you'd imagine and sparked a walk out of the debating chamber. It's a shit storm here right now.

I can imagine. Nothing here about it yet at (at least not on the front pages), but I did see this on The Guardian just now. The guy in question is British, not Kiwi born, but it's the first time I've noticed mainstream media even covering any back-stories about people in detention on Christmas Island.

Multiple flights cancelled as tornado, severe thunderstorms hit Sydney

Severe thunderstorms and a tornado hit Sydney on Wednesday, with more to come in the afternoon.

"There were gusts of 213km/h recorded at Cronulla and it was obvious from our radar that there was a tornado in that area.

"So conditions are ripe that they could still occur with any more storms that sweep through your area."

Ha, thanks I'm fine - looks like Hunters Hill just got the tail end of the storm. The sky turned black and it bucketed down with rain for about half an hour, but we missed the strong winds and hail, thankfully. It's still looking pretty grim outside, but I'm hoping we're past the worst of it. Sounds like the southern suburbs took a battering though.

Watch and behold the brilliance of 'Stoner Sloth", the NSW government's new TV campaign aimed at stopping teenagers smoking pot. Unintentionally hilarious.

The picture is currently on the on-line front page of the UK Telegraph as well with a caption about the female "dying in her male companion's arms". Err...not quite.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

San Francisco was saved by Batboy a little while back, today Sydney is being saved by Ironboy. He's currently at the Opera House, about to battle a super -villain. Ironboy is a 9 year old boy suffering from cystic fibrosis. He's had a big day so far, a ride in a police chopper and speed boat, shout-outs from Robert Downy Jr and a host of local celebs and pollies, plus he's getting followed around by a huge media pack and supporters.

Good for him, cystic fibrosis is a horrible disease.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

C, please tell me you're going to this.

Quote:
Sydney Gets A ‘Footloose’ Themed Angry Dance Party To Protest The Lockout Laws

In a case of life imitating art, some legends online have organised a mass flash mob style Footloose inspired ‘angry dance’ against the lockout laws. Take that John Lithgow, I mean Mike Baird.

“Once upon a time there was a small town called Sydney, where the residents enjoyed listening to their Rock and Roll music and dancing to their hearts content,” reads the Facebook event description.

“But some of the people were reckless and violent (and generally just dickheads) and they hurt some people, and sadly some were even killed!

“The small town’s council became afraid and decided to “protect” its people by banning dancing and rock and roll music, hoping to create a nanny state where no one could enjoy themselves or go about their lives without intervention (unless its at the casino).

“BUT THEN ALONG CAME KEVIN BACON!!!…. and he danced… and it was good!

“Now it’s Sydney’s turn!” it concludes.

The dance is intended to show the State Government and Premier Baird that the lockout laws are hurting the city, that dancing is not a crime and that the laws do not address the core issue of violence in Australian culture.

“We’re not here for violence! we’re here to DANCE! like Kevin Bacon… or the other ones… I haven’t really seen the whole film… BUT YOU GET THE POINT!”

They’re taking it all pretty seriously though, asking attendees to ‘dress appropriately’ in “acid wash jeans, white t-shirts (sleeves rolled up at the bicep) or singlets, oldschool headphones, 80’s fashions, unicorn onseies… or whatever, it’s the thought that counts.”

Planning to meet in Martin Place at 5:30pm on Monday 22nd February, the mod will passionately dance their way up Martin Place toward the “evil town council building” to the super ’80s track Never, by Moving Pictures (the song from the original angry dance scene fyi).

Well, normally I keep my best Kevin Bacon angry dance moves to abandoned warehouses. But, I may have to branch out for this good cause.

Honestly, the lock-out laws seem like good bureaucratic intentions gone badly wrong. Someone actually called the cops to a William Street (Kings Cross) wine bar the other night, because they were displaying the wine menu in the window. SOMEONE MIGHT READ IT AS THEY WALK BY AND GO INSIDE, DRINK ALL THE $28 A GLASS UNWOODED CHARDONNAY THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER AND THEN KING HIT SOMEONE. Or something. It's getting really silly.

So Barnaby Joyce just became the new Deputy Prime Minister and now I can't stop thinking about that Simpsons episode when Bart had to apologise to the Australian government.

Nothing crazier than usual. Warren Truss, the previous Deputy just retired. Under the Lib/Nats agreement, the Deputy PM always has to be from the Nationals when the Coalition are in power. Barnaby was the only Nat who nominated, so he obviously won the vote. Political cartoonists and satirists across the nation are doubtless delighted with the result.

They are a funny lot, the Nats. I grew up in National Party heartland and pretty much my whole family still votes for them religiously. The Nats are an odd mix of social conservative combined with agrarian socialism. They are to the left of Labour on some issues, and to the right of the Libs on others.

Ohhhhhhh, okay. Thank you, I didn't know that!
And yes, memes are shooting out faster than I can keep up with.

And thank you for explaining their platform, I never could figure them out. I'm sorry your family are religious Nat voters. I would imagine it's like having an ancestor who played for Collingwood.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

So, almost 20 years after 35 people were murdered by Martin Bryant in Port Arthur, portions of his police interviews have been released. Channel 7 screened a (surprisingly tasteful and respectful) TV special about the massacre last night and aired the interview tapes for the very first time.

Apart from the fact that Bryant was dumb as a pile of bricks (which was already pretty well known), the tapes revealed just how much he loved his guns. He was a slow, unpopular guy who never had any friends, but when he had a gun in his hand, he finally felt powerful. At one point, the police bring his weapons into the interview room. His eyes immediately light up and he asks if he can hold the guns. When he gets told no, he then asks if they are still loaded. And then giggles.

Thank god our politicians saw sense and brought in our gun laws. There may well be another Martin Bryant out there somewhere, and we may well get another mass shooting some day, but at least we've made it hard for evil creeps to be armed.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Media hyperventilating here at the moment over rumours of an early election. There is plenty of talk that Malcolm will call a double dissolution and that we might be going to the polls as early as July.

It's a potentially risky strategy since Turnbull's popularity has dropped dramatically in recent weeks. Luckily for him, Shorten seems to be remaining as dull and electorally unappealing as ever.

Ha, might as well. I have a plan that involves slipping Clive Palmer some crystal meth and a can of spray tan in the hopes he becomes our version of Donald Trump. Only way to liven up an Australian election campaign.
