I saw an exhibition of her work in Wellington years ago. I'll never forget it, that shit stays with you (in a wonderful way - thought it was amazing).

Good on the TAC tor taking such an unusual approach to a campaign, great idea.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Big news story in Oz this morning is the reaction to a 4 Corners report last night showing torture and violence used against teenagers at a youth detention centre in the Northern Territory. I didn't watch the program, but the footage being replayed today is shocking. Turnbull has acted immediately and called a Royal Commission.

This video shows one teenage boy wearing a "spitting" hood. There is other footage showing a young boy being tear-gassed and guards laughing about how they are going to smash him.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

NT Corrections Minister just got sacked over the 4 Corners allegations. Proof emerging that at least two senior NT ministers (including Corrections Minister) were aware of the footage, had watched it, and did absolutely nothing about it.

I suspect a lot of heads are going to roll in the next couple of days.

The Northern Territory is a world unto itself, mostly. They have a massive problem with juvenile crime and successive governments appear to have concluded the only response was to be tougher on prisoners.

It's become quite clear that the NT government knew what was going on. They even commissioned a report on the matter a couple of years ago, and then ignored all the evidence the report provided. The footage shown by 4 Corners was actually part of that earlier report. This is just the first time that footage has ever been seen by the public.

Turnbull has acted swiftly, and Shorten is backing him. The terms of reference are still being nutted out, but I think the Royal Commission will be asked to look at all the youth detention centres in the NT, not just this one. It seems to be a systemic problem.

SO damn proud of my friend Lee, whose book on the recent Australian farce of an election and the sudden breakdown of his marriage, is out in October.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

The design of Australia's new $5 note might not have met with widespread approval, but there is one aspect of the new currency that everyone agrees on. The fact that the denomination is incorporated in braille that allows blind and visually impaired people to recognise the notes by touch alone is a big improvement on the earlier concept of just making the notes slightly different sizes. All new Australian banknotes will eventually have the same technology. Very cool.

I did have a giggle at the jokes about the design being so hideous that you would need Braille. But I agree, very cool idea.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Despite the usual ACA histronics, the first few minutes of this CCTV footage of the "lone wolf" terror attack in suburban Sydney over the weekend is pretty intense. The bravery of neighbours who helped to fend off the attacker is pretty amazing - it takes some courage to confront a knife-wielder lunatic when you are armed only with a broomstick and a rock.

The victim is recovering in hospital with a slashed throat and after losing several fingers. The ISIS-inspired attacker was captured by police and is facing terrorism and attempted murder charges.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

So, a couple of days ago an Australian won the Malaysian Grand Prix and nine drunken Aussies decided to celebrate by stripping down to their budgies - complete with Malaysian flag.

While that would be regarded as mildly amusing/stupid but harmless behaviour back home, Malaysia ain't Oz. All nine were immediately arrested and have been imprisoned while the Malaysians crank up their outrage machine and the government decides what charges, if any, to bring against them. Public indecency, intentional insult and disrespecting the Malaysian flag are all being considered. Chances are they'll just be deported in a week or so, but we'll see.

*siiiiiiigh*

I mean, it's fine if you're at the Australian Open (and even then it's wince-inducing), but like how hard is it to look up local rules and etiquette when you go to a country that clearly isn't as Westernized?

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Yup. And unless they are weirdly close bros and always wear matching swimmers under their clothes, they obviously planned to strip if the Aussie won the race. With that kind of fore-thought, might have been an idea to have a quick Google about Malaysian laws. At least they didn't go full "Straya and do a mass nudie run across the track.

Terrible news from the east coast of NZ - a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami. Reports of 2 dead at the moment.

Thanks, yep I'm fine. I have a brand new house so it was built well to withstand quakes, we only had a few things fall over here, no permanent damage. The power was out for a few hours though and aftershocks are still happening 9 hours later.

It was easily the biggest one I've felt in my life, very scary. It's been a pretty sleepless night. I had literally been in bed for about 2 minutes when it hit and couldn't get to sleept for a long time after that.

The Wellington CBD is pretty much on shutdown (which is where I work) so have just spent the morning trying to get hold of all of my staff to make sure they're ok (they are).

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Still aftershock central here. The initial quake was upgraded today from a 7.5 to a 7.8. From beginning to end it went for 2 minutes (it certainly felt really really long at my house).

Attached a few photos where you can see how the ground has been permanently lifted a couple of metres. The third photo shows how far railway tracks were shifted from where they usually were. Crazy. Keep thinking how if this were closer to Wellington (where I live) there would have been hundreds if not thousands of deaths. So scary. My building is open again tomorrow so I'll be back in the office but my partner's work building is unlikely to be open again before Christmas. There's one building that they've said already is going to have to be demolished and there's a big cordon around it in case it collapses.

And as if the earthquakes weren't enough we had a storm hit yesterday and there was so much flooding that Wellington was completely cut off due to both state highways in and out being closed (there are no back roads - that's right, only two roads out of the city, yup).

Yes, definitely. Wellington is the place that is "well overdue for the big one" as you learn at a very young age. The largest quake since NZ was settled by Europeans was an 8.2 in 1855, pretty close to Wellington. It created where the airport is today, as that was previously underwater.

I've grown up with earthquakes my whole life which I think has made me a bit complacent about the whole thing, but in the last few years we have been having more, and stronger ones than we had in the past so it's actually starting to get me a bit scared and I've never had to deal with that before.
