Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Turns out the shooter was an Australian citizen who moved to NZ. Imagine an Australian getting all worked up and angry over a group of foreigners coming in and "taking over" your country. Read a history book mate.

Also looks like PM Arden is set to make changes to NZ's gun laws. I'll leave that to the Kiwis to decide whether its what they want, but it certainly shows some decisive leadership on her part. And it certainly worked pretty well here after Port Arthur.

that's really what it boils down to... white people invading a continent, then outraged when the tides of history send others into their midst....

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

Fraser Anning is vile. He's essentially an "accidental" Senator - he got in because someone else got kicked out. He's only been in the Senate since late 2017 and already left one political party and been kicked out of another. Now he's an independent and has pretty much zero chance of being re-elected under his own steam.

I suspect he's using his platform to set himself up as a far right leader of sorts after the next Senate election. I hope he just crawls back under a rock instead. He's an embarrassment to my country.

This is a real official statement from a normally pretty dull and non-political lobby group.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

New gun laws announced today. Looks like there will be an amnesty and a gun buy-back scheme as well.

Quote:
New Zealand to ban all military-style semi-automatic guns and assault rifles
Ardern says all weapons used in Friday’s terrorist attack will be banned.

She says: “I absolutely believe there will be a common view amongst New Zealanders, those who use guns for legitimate purposes, and those who have never touched one, that the time for the mass and easy availability of these weapons must end. And today they will.

“Today I am announcing that NewZealand will ban all military-style semi-automatic weapons. We will also ban all assault rifles. We will ban all high capacity magazines. We will ban all parts with the ability to convert semi-automatic or any other type of firearm into a military-style semi-automatic weapon. We will ban parts that cause a firearm to generate semi-automatic, automatic or close to automatic gunfire.

“In short, every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned in this country.”

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

So...turns out the leadership of One Nation are a group of amoral grifters who would do anything for power. Much surprisement. The guy in my avatar has the correct reaction, as always.

Quote:
An elaborate sting operation has revealed that senior One Nation figures, including Pauline Hanson's chief-of-staff, sought millions of dollars in donations from the US pro-gun lobby to help them water down Australia's gun control laws.

A journalist from news network Al Jazeera, posing as the head of a fake Australian gun lobby group, secretly filmed Hanson's top adviser James Ashby and One Nation's Queensland leader Steve Dickson during a visit to Washington DC last year.

While in the US capital Ashby and Dickson met with representatives from the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) and other conservative groups.

In a conversation with undercover reporter Rodger Muller, Dickson says that he hopes to raise $10 million from US pro-gun groups.

Ashby says they should aim higher and try to raise $20 million.

Ashby and Dickson agree that with that amount of money they could seize the balance of power in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

"If we could get that amount of money, imagine: we could change Australia," Dickson says.

"You'd have the whole government by the balls."

In a meeting with representatives from Koch Industries, a leading funder of US conservative causes. Dickson is recorded saying: "It's going to get down to money at the end of the day.

"We can change the voting system in our country, the way people operate, if we've got the money to do it.

"The ingredients are there, we just don't have the petrol to put in the engine.

"So whatever you can do would be fantastic."

Dickson is filmed telling pro-gun advocates that Australia has been importing "dangerous" Muslims who break into people's homes with baseball bats and steal everything they own.

"Our country's going into chaos," he says.

Ashby is filmed saying it would "f---ing rock the boat" if One Nation's meetings with US pro-gun were made public.

The meetings took place just before the Australian Parliament banned foreign donations.

Al Jazeera does not present evidence that One Nation ended up receiving funds from the NRA, Koch Industries or other US groups.

In a meeting filmed before Dickson's trip to the US, he tells Muller that he wants him to help gain support from the NRA for One Nation.

"This is about getting a political wing in Australia that can actually work hand in glove with the United States and the way the United States thinks," Dickson says.

interesting, i’m going to give this a watch.

last week two Parkland survivors died by suicide. I wonder how much time reasonable gun reform will get in our 2020 campaigns.

It's well worth watching (Part 2 is also on YouTube), even though I guess Americans are probably much better versed in how insidious the NRA's tactics are than we are in Australia. There's a section of the doco where a guy from the NRA is coaching the two Australian muppets about what to say if there's a mass shooting and children are killed. It's so cynical, it's disgusting.

I read about one of the parents from Sandy Hook killing himself recently too. I really hope the gun debate advances in the US this time around.

we’ll see. You may have been talking about this HuffPost article. Also the conversation of PAC money and campaign finance reform must happen. 50+ million donated by the NRA to six R senators and Trump in 2016.

There are growing calls here to ban all political donations from firearm manufacturers and/or pro-gun lobbyists. The documentary has done a great service to Australia - its shaken a lot of people out of their complacency about guns. We have a federal election coming up in May, and I suspect further strengthening our gun laws will be a vote winner.

I plan to watch this tonight (finally).

America / Austrailia in relation to implementing sensible gun control is somewhat apples to oranges given the respective population and political landscape but I'm still hopeful. 16 months after Las Vegas it appears the bumpstock ban will hold up in couough with 500K + already in circulation and the danger that a seizure rt, althprogram could potentially present for ATF, it's still premature to count this as progression in my view.

I need to study the history of AU / NZ politics a bit more : )

https://thetakeout.com/man-allegedly...ing-1833814178

Quote:
Man allegedly blows up strangers’ car over drive-thru honking

What authorities describe as a “relatively minor” and “benign” incident at an Australian McDonald’s apparently led to an explosion. A man has been taken into police custody after an alleged period of harassment eventually led him to plant a bomb in a family’s car.

That news comes courtesy of The Guardian, reporting on the charges against 33-year-old Ryan Sharp. On February 22, Sharp’s partner, a 31-year-old woman, was in the drive-thru of a 24-hour McDonald’s when another car honked at her. (Sharp was not present.) That incident allegedly led to what the Guardian calls “a prolonged campaign of stalking and harassment,” which reached its peak when Sharp detonated an explosive device authorities describe as “sophisticated.” No one was in the car at the time, and no injuries were reported.

“The work done by this male to identify where the victim lived was quite ingenious and indicated a specific intent,” counter-terrorism and special tactics command’s Det Supt Michael McLean said on Tuesday.

“He located the victims’ home, [and] we will allege, placed the device under the car where it ultimately exploded sometime later.”

Sharp was arrested at a gas station this week; afterward, police discovered a pipe bomb and drone in his possession. He has been charged with “two counts of using a carriage service to threaten serious harm, using a carriage service to threaten to kill, destroying or damaging property, placing an explosive on a vehicle with the intent to cause harm, threatening to cause injury to a person for being a witness and two counts of possessing or use of prohibited weapon without permit.”

His partner was also arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact as well as stalking or intimidating.

This is the latest instance of what seem like totally normal interactions at drive-thrus and fast-food places going bonkers, a category that includes these assholes who yelled racial slurs at a woman before driving her out of her car and driving it into a telephone pole; this guy and his initiative; this coupon-lover; this creative thinker; and this instance of packet-related rage. Just be cool out there, people. Take a deep breath.

Re: The Australian/NZ Chat Thread

That's been getting a lot of coverage here.....it's absolutely nuts. The guy catfished the couple onFacebook. Pretended to be a young blonde woman interested in buying some household stuff they were selling. That's how he got their address. The girlfriend had already taken a photo of their number plate after they beeped at her at Maccas and used it to find out their name.

The guy was apparently bawling his eyes out when he had to appear in court.

She certainly was very impressive in her handling of the Christchurch atrocity. Very compassionate, and very genuine.
