Re: Movie Recommendations

Yeah, this is probably his year. A great performance (I'm assuming) that doesn't turn off the old voters (Wolf of Wall Street was fantastic but not the right role to win the Oscar) combined with the repeated losses giving the feeling that he deserves it.

Very keen to see this. It's out now, but I just haven't found the time. Anything Michael Shannon I'm down for. ...Well, almost anything.

Heh, I avoided that one altogether. Shannon is sensational in this, he's got this creepy reptilian vibe happening.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I saw some good ones over the holidays. Sicario, The Martian, The Hateful Eight, The Force Awakens... All very worth watching.

Sicario scared me because of how close to home it is and how accurate things are. The drug violence and third world conditions only 3 hours away from me is very real. A scene where they are driving through Juarez under a bridge is dead on to the horrors that occur directly south of our borders.

The Martian was just a good survival tale set on Mars. Beautifully shot by Ridley Scott with an very great Matt Damon, this movie just works.

The Hateful Eight... I'm a sucker for Westerns and for Tarantino films. This one might not be the most accessible but if you like a good slow burn and can get around some pretty nasty dialogue you should give it a try. I loved every moment of it and at 3 hours wanted to watch it again.

The Force Awakens
. What can I say about this that hasn't already been said before. Great movie.

Last movie we watched in the theatre was Suffragette. It was okay, but felt like a bit of a missed opportunity overall.

Just got back from watching a French film called The Belier Family. Although the outcome is always predictable, it's effortlessly charming, frequently funny and quietly heartfelt without being too sugar-coated. Very enjoyable.

The Gift is a pretty nifty psychological thriller that'll keep you guessing right up til the end. A terrific cast including Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton who wrote the script, directed the film and also stars (phew).

Re: Movie Recommendations

Pretty excited about Stephen King's The Dark Tower finally going into production. It will start Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba. I don't know how the hell they are going to do it considering the amount of material that is the source, but it should be interesting nonetheless.

First trailer for the new Ghostbusters. I have to disagree with the headline here, though still reserving full judgement: http://www.vox.com/2016/3/3/11152328...usters-trailer

Re: Movie Recommendations

Bolding is mine. Mind blown.

Is Disney targeting its Zootopia marketing strategy toward Furries?

Quote:
In either an inspired or questionable (or both) new advertising tactic, it appears Disney has been marketing its latest animated flick, Zootopia, to Furries. Furries being people who have something of an invested and sometimes sexual interest in all things anthropomorphic.

The news surfaced when BuzzFeed came upon an email that a marketing agency working with Disney sent to the furry Meetup group Furlife, encouraging Furries to share photos of themselves in fur suits to social media with the movie hashtag, offering merchandise in exchange.

Considering that Zootopia is set in what is technically the human world, but with animals in people clothes, working people jobs, this is basically the movie for any given Furry.

In December, Inverse shared that the film “suspiciously catered toward Furries,” by using “shapely animals with gender signifiers like eyelashes and hips,” sensually voiced actors like Shakira portraying them and the fact that the main character in the film is a fox — “arguably the most popular ‘fursona’ cited by Furries.”

Furries, for their part, are enjoying the special attention. Groups have already set up Furry party screenings, created fan art that has incited petitions to stop creating Zootopia porn, and are already selling out theaters for what has apparently been dubbed the “Star Wars for anthro animals.”

Re: Movie Recommendations

If you appreciate the slow-burn, original and very human-centric films of Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud), then his latest will not disappoint. Midnight Special is basically a sci-fi chase film which doffs its cap to classics like Starman and Close Encounters and echoes the way in which those earlier films managed to create such a solid emotional core amongst all the other-worldly, extra-terrestrial window-dressing. A really good cast (Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, the little boy from St Vincent) really commit themselves to a storyline that could be all sorts of hokey in the wrong hands, and ensure sentimental elements always seem valid, rather than sugary. People will probably either love or hate the ending, but at least Nichols always leaves you thinking.

I'd recommend not reading too much about the film or watching any trailers before viewing, if possible.

Looking forward to Green Room, the new thriller from the director of Blue Ruin. The trailer look great, the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive and I give it bonus points for Patrick Stewart.

This was intense. Loved the ship-in-a-bottle feel. Great cast, beautiful women. A splendid addition to the dystopian film genre.

Yep. My wife and I watched this over the weekend. Have to say I was truly impressed. I have really enjoyed all of Ben Wheatley's movies so far. This one seems to be his biggest budget movie and boy did he ever know how to put the extra cash to work.

It comes highly recommended by the Starks.
