Re: Red Rocks - Morrison, CO - June 20

So is this a Ryan Adams and the stringdusters show or are they just opening?

Re: Red Rocks - Morrison, CO - June 20

Pulled the trigger on tickets. I've never been to Red Rocks, but have always wanted to check it out. Any tips from people who have been? I assume getting there early is key since it's a big place and the tickets are 90% GA.

Re: Red Rocks - Morrison, CO - June 20

I just grabbed GA tickets, as well.

You'll definitely want to get there early because GA is row 1-25, then like 50-top is GA too. The issue is you a really high up at that point. Not ideal for me.

Because it's a Tuesday walking into the venue right around gates opening will be more than enough to end up low. I'm interested in this opener so it'll work out.

I'd suggest getting to the venue early and taking in the tailgating. There will be a ton of marijuana and it will be wonderful.

Waiting for the mailman to bring my Isbell record so it doesn't melt on the porch, then making the trip to RR. Stoked!

Good times last night. The highlight of it was Winding Wheel. Just awesome.

Some really cool lightning over the storm most of the show.

Pretty happy back to back. Really wanted Anything I Say To You Now. Maybe in Milwaukee next month.

I know it's been said ad nauseum, but I really wish he'd mix it up. Few people have the catalogue he has, every show should be at least a LITTLE more different.

I'd be much more into traveling to see him if I thought I was gonna see something other than the same set. Oh well.

Re: Red Rocks - Morrison, CO - June 20

Head scratching how he played nothing with the stringdusters. I wonder if there was a mixup. There was a 3-mic set-up at the front of the stage but he only used the single mic. It looked like they had it ready for a few acoustic songs but it never transpired.

Prisoner was awesome. He mentioned amp issues so I'm not sure if he's been doing this all tour. But starting it solo/acoustic then the band came in and he put down his acoustic walked back to the electric kicked it on for a long solo.

This band jams a bit - very refreshing. Cold Roses has a great new jam. Magnolia Mountain and Peaceful Valley both rocked. I thought the shining didn't jam enough so that had me happy.

Re: Red Rocks - Morrison, CO - June 20

Just got home from the trip to CO. Seeing a concert at Red Rocks has been a bucket list thing for me, but it's about a seven hour drive from where I live. While it was a big time commitment to see one show, the concert was a great experience and totally worth the effort. Some takeaways:

The venue really is amazing. Maybe the biggest "whoa" moment where I was at was when Ryan hit the first chorus of Dirty Rain right as a couple lightning bolts struck in the distance.

When the Stars Go Blue was played in a kind of brooding, pulsing, hypnotic way that was a totally different treatment than I'd seen before, and it really worked.

His merch is great. There was a show-specific t-shirt and I got a copy of Vampires, thus completing my RA 7" collection.

We camped overnight at Bear Creek Lake Park, which is somehow very pretty and serene while also affording a breathtaking view of the back of a Home Depot. It's only a few miles from the venue.

Best overheard convo:
Teen girl: "My favorite song is Diamonds in Her Eyes from that Whiskey album."
Dad maybe?: "Oh, you mean Diamonds on the Soles of the Shoes."
Teen girl: "Yes, that's the one!"

There were some sound issues early on, particularly in the first two songs. Sounded like the music was panning left to right for whatever reason with volume problems too, but it was fixed by the third song.

Either I'm getting older and more crotchety, crowds are getting more annoying, or probably a combination. The people around us were a lot more interested in chatter and blowing weed smoke around than what was happening on stage. To be fair, it's hard to convince a casual fan that they need ten minutes of Peaceful Valley in their lives, but still.

Stringdusters kick ass, and their set was amazing. I was surprised neither they nor Nikki Bluhm joined Ryan. Seems like Dear John would have been a logical choice for a duet.

The improv song, while obviously not wholly improvised, was legitimately funny.

All in all, I had a great time. His voice was clear in the mix, the venue is one of a kind, and the set list (while similar to the rest of the tour) was perfectly fine with no duds for me. I agree with another poster that Winding Wheel was a particular standout.

It was about how he had trouble with his socks that morning (socks+rocks=sick rhyme), then the impending guitar solo that would perplex the cameraman, then how Todd's solo was so good it blew his brain apart. Kind of an up-tempo alt-county song.

Damn. Roughly where were ya sitting?

Crowds have been hit or miss for me in 2 summers of going to shows at Red Rocks (not the biggest sample size, but a diverse set of concerts at least). There's little I hate more than people who go to concerts to talk all night. I have no issue telling people to shut up or go to the bar to have conversations.

I got really lucky last night. Pretty much everyone around was into it. Lots of weed for sure, but I'll take that always over being between drunks in a crowd.

We moved around a little, and ended up on the first row behind the reserved section. By no means did it ruin the concert, and I think it was just back luck, but the folks we were around were up and down a lot, showing each other their Instagrams all night, and just generally being distracting. It was most irritating during during the acoustic tunes. It's amazing how bright a phone screen is comparable to the huge screen up front. It might have been a non-issue if we'd stayed lower down, but we wanted to spread out some.

Most everybody around us left about 30 minutes before the show ended, I guess to beat traffic (getting out of there is brutal, btw).

The weed thing is interesting to me, since it's not legal in NM yet. I don't smoke because of my job, but I did for years. To me, getting hit in the face with a fog of smoke isn't much different from somebody shoving their cocktail in your face. Props to RR though for encouraging people to smoke in private on their signage, even if not everybody did so.
