Re: Movie Recommendations

I was really pleased that Three Billboards did so well at the Golden Globes. Nice to see an "indie" kind of film get mainstream plaudits.

No doubt I'm in a minority, but I did not like The Shape Of Water at all.

It's the worst one I've seen at least. I didn't watch Pacific Rim or the Hellboy flicks. Crimson Peak was disappointing, but it had some merits. Michael Shannon is the only good thing going for this one. I just couldn't take the whole falling in love with Guppy-Man thing seriously.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Really enjoyed I, Tonya. Margot Robbie and the always wonderful Allison Janney really raise the film to a higher level with great performances. It no doubt plays hard and fast with the facts (and to be fair, admits as much right from the outset), but it's very entertaining and blackly funny.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer was weird fun.

I see the same director did The Lobster, a film I haven't seen yet but recently bought for dirt cheap because I'd heard it was good. That's up next.

I enjoyed it. It's gritty. Written by Cormac McCarthy. Directed by Ridley Scott.

Re: Movie Recommendations

So, Mute (Netflix) was a big dud. Sort of like a confused, discount-store version of Blade Runner. The movie should have just focused solely on Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, they were by far the most engaging characters and the only thing that made the film watchable. Pity, because Moon is such a gem.

Yeah. I agree with you 100%. Towards the end I just wanted it to be over.

Yeah, it really dragged. The whole futuristic setting seemed pretty much a waste of time too - the central part of the storyline could have just as easily been set in the present.

One film I really did enjoy however was The Florida Project. Just a really sensitive and honest look at childhood and poverty. Should have been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, imo. Willem Dafoe is terrific and the little girl is a scene stealer.

Re: Movie Recommendations

The wife and I went to see Annihilation this weekend. What a hell of a movie. I love the source material and though this was a great loose adaptation. My wife went in not know anything about it and she was blown away by the end. Just a beautiful mind trip of a movie. Unlike anything being made at this time. Very inspired by Tarkovsky. I was tempted to place this in the horror thread because it also falls into that category. Anyone else see it?
