How is that possible? I figured your local TB just has a bucket of sauce packets for whenever you show up.

Certainly a meal with near immediate results. I'm on the can right now.

And yes, they should make a double decker with this. You are on to something Hild.

Oooh, spicy dorito flamas tacos?! I'm so in for that one.

That article was pretty cool, hilde. They should totally hire us for their ideas on other products to launch. There's already some ideas in this thread, and we haven't even been offered incentives!

Quote:
Are You Craving Taco Bell?

The latest buzz in the fast food world is the new $1 ‘Cravings’ menu from Taco Bell. Taco Bell is owned by Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), which also owns KFC and Pizza Hut. The chain, which is known for its inexpensive menu, is going one step further.

It is planning to replace its existing value menu, better known as “Why pay more?,” with the new menu option. The reason for this is that prices for some of the items have crept up to $1.49.

The entire value menu proposition

These days there are a whole lot of promotions from most fast food chains, led by none other than McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD), where each is claiming to provide more value for consumer's money. With the offerings and price points looking increasingly similar, it is really difficult to discern who is providing better value.

And it looks like people may be getting a little tired of value deals. According to researcher NPD Group, in 2012 visits to restaurants for deals fell by 3%, while non-deal based visits grew by 2%. This is a reversal of the trend that we saw about four years back.

Meanwhile, a situation has evolved where people are more reluctant to eat out as a whole. According to the National Restaurant Association, restaurant visits in the US fell for the fourth consecutive month in March.

While in the US this is often attributable to the strain on discretionary income due to payroll taxes, gas prices, etc, McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson has said that lower consumer spending is a worldwide phenomenon.

Therefore, restaurant owners are not left with too much of a choice but to resort to value propositions to pull people in. Analysts at NPD believe that the trick would be to move away from combo meals and traditional value menus and offer more innovations at lower price points.

Can Taco Bell do the trick?

The company insists that its new menu is definitely not just about cheaper fare alone. It is convinced that there is a good demand for the items that they have put on the new menu. The Cravings menu is aimed to fill in the gaps that often exist in value menu options.

The menu is in fact quite extensive. and offers as many as 12 options. including Shredded chicken mini quesadilla, Beefy nacho loaded griller, Spicy beef mini quesadilla, Cheesy bean & rice burrito, etc. Currently, the chain is testing the new menu in two markets – Sacramento in California, and Kansas City in Missouri.

Depending on the success of the test results, a national roll-out may soon be in the cards.

This is part of a bigger strategy

The chain has recently launched its concept of ‘happier hours,’ aimed at driving traffic during the slower afternoon hours. So, between 2 pm and 5 pm Taco Bell offers Loaded grillers and all regular size beverages at $1 each.

The company also offers 'value versions’ of Chipotle or Qdoba burritos. While there is no comparison in terms of quality, there is also no denying the fact that the dollar differential does matter. Whereas a basic Chipotle sandwich will not come for anything below $7, all items on Taco Bell’s Cantina Bell Menu come for less than $5.

So it is not just the value menu alone. The chain wants to drive home the concept of value through more than one means.

This has been successful

Taco Bell is generating strong same store sales growth even in this weak eating out environment. The chain’s sales were the major force behind Yum!’s 2% same store sales growth in the US first quarter. Taco Bell saw a strong 6% growth in same store sales, which offset the 1% decline noted by both KFC and Pizza Hut.

What else is happening on the value scene?

McDonald’s is still the biggest player and trendsetter on the value front. The company is aggressively promoting its cheese burger, fries, nuggets, drinks etc, all priced around $1. It had stepped up its dollar offering with Grilled onion cheddar burger at the start of the year.

The company maintains that promoting its dollar menu will be its strategy for this year, even if it means that margins will have to take a backseat.

But even the value menu could not help Big Mac avoid the 1% decline in same store sales that it saw in the first quarter.

McDonald’s remains the biggest brand in the fast food world and the company is gearing up to meet the current challenges head on. It maintains that it has some 160 menu items in its global pipelines to appease its fans across the world and drive growth.

Burger King (NYSE: BKW) has recently stepped up its game in the value segment. As part of this strategy, the chain has put its Jr Whopper sandwich on the value menu this year, pricing it at $1.29. Its other value offerings include cheeseburgers, salad, chicken nuggets, fries, drinks and other standard fare. It has started promoting these items more aggressively.

In the first quarter Burger King’s same store sales dipped by 3% in the US and Canada. However, it was able to grow its adjusted earnings per share from $0.11 to $0.17 due to aggressive cost cutting efforts. The company expects same store sales to gain momentum from May-June, riding on its new menu options, promotions, and easier comps.

Parting thoughts

Taco Bell is performing well. After the recent success of Doritos Locos Tacos, the new Cravings menu may be the next big opportunity for the chain. Taco Bell is expected to remain a key earnings driver for its parent Yum! over the coming periods.

Re: The TBY Taco Bell thread

Have they gone too far?

Quote:
By Anh Do

Fast-food news travels fast: Taco Bell is quietly testing a new "waffle taco" at three Southern California locations, including its Santa Ana restaurant on Grand Avenue.

And by 10 a.m. Tuesday, a steady stream of customers was coming in to order the new breakfast menu item in multiples -- four, six, 10 or more -- for a mere 89 cents each.

The waffle taco comes steaming in foil, a waffle folded around a thin sausage patty and a generous helping of scrambled eggs.

Squeeze the packet of Heinz table syrup over the top for a sinful morning treat.

That’s what Louise Carson, who lives near the restaurant, said she likes to do. She has been ordering the waffle tacos in the morning, and then offers them as after-school snacks to her kids.

“I pass them out in the car during pickup time and they have a bite before we go to different sports events," she said. "It’s handy, and the price is right.”

Taco Bell has begun selling breakfast items at nearly 800 outlets in 10 states as one of the latest fast-food chains to attempt to nab a bigger share of the early morning market. Because the menu item is still in the testing stage, calorie counts aren't available.

The waffle taco has become a staple for her family, Carson said, because it's so affordable.

Our take: The waffle part of the taco is mushy, and the meat has a slight rubbery texture that is not uncommon with fast-food items. But we might be in the minority. As reported earlier on the Daily Dish, Taco Bell's waffle taco already has fans buzzing on social media and an enviable hashtag: #itsdelicious.

Carson says she's a fan as well.

"It’s all about convenience and a good deal," she said. "And it’s easy to pack."

She also eyed the menu above the cash registers, noting the new fruit-topped oatmeal and chocolate-chip sandwich items being touted.

"Thumbs-up" to the chain for trying new flavors, she said, adding that tacos and waffles combine "the best" of both worlds.
