The way it's written was quite difficult to get used to (see below, from Wikipedia):
Quote:
Pygmy is an epistolary novel. Each chapter is a dispatch from the main character, Pygmy, writing as Agent Number 67, presumably to his home country's government. The book uses incorrect grammar, mostly comical "Engrish", written in a detached, scientific tone.
At first I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it, but once I got into it I was ok, now I'm enjoying it quite a bit, rather funny in places.

It's not super-recent (2009), I just picked it up from a second-hand book store. The only ones of his I've read are from earlier than this one (Fight Club, Survivor, Lullaby, Diary, Haunted, & Snuff). I remember really enjoying Diary.

He also has two collections of short stories that are worth checking out - Some Rain Must Fall and another collection called Vanilla Bright Like Eminem.

He has written a couple of novellas as well, but to be honest, I thought they were disappointing.
Years later, I am still haunted by the opening story in Vanilla Bright Like Eminem, and there were several stories in Some Rain Must Fall that really stuck with me. I liked The Courage Consort as well.

In that case you might enjoy The Least of My Scars by Stephen Graham Jones. I'm pretty sure that falls into the Weird Fiction category.

Anybody read anything by Stanislaw Lem? If so, where should I start? I saw Solaris recently, and it got me interested.

Yeah, I've collected enough for now. No library for a long while. Plus, I always have a few short story collections kicking around with stray tales unread. But I don't mind that quite as much as unread novels.

This is pretty engaging so far - an unusual mix of sci-fi and crime.

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

Just finished the new Margaret Atwood and I can highly recommend it. Terrifically inventive tales that are typically Atwood - a strong, complicated (but not always particularly likeable) woman as the protagonist and a storyline that seldom fails to surprise. The Freeze Dried Groom, Lusus Naturae, The Dead Hand Loves You and the title story were the standouts for me.

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

Stephen King's newest, Mr. Mercedes. I'm enjoying it. He's so good at building characters and suspense.

But I can't wait for his upcoming book, Revival. It's supposedly a straight horror novel. It's been a long time since King released something with real bite.
