I need to catch up on King. I've read everything he has put out up until after Full Dark, No Stars.

Nice! I'll have to pick it up!

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

The Booker shortlist has been announced:

Rise Again At a Decent Hour by Joshua Ferris
The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler
J by Howard Jacobson
The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee
How to Be Both by Ali Smith

The Narrow Road to the Deep North is by an Australian author and is fantastic, btw.

I just checked it out from the library.

Also, I read Atwood's short story collection Stone Mattress and McEwan's The Children Act this past weekend. I really enjoyed both.

Yes, please read so we can discuss! I really enjoyed it. Don't read any interviews with him beforehand though. It will change it for you.

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

Oh, sad news CB - I just read that Faber claims this will be his final novel. He is said to have written it as a homage to his late wife who passed away with cancer recently, and has now decided he is not inspired to write any more.

“History proves that most writers get forgotten anyway,” he said. “That’s very likely to happen to my books, and if I’m extremely lucky, maybe one of my books will survive. The books I’ve written are my contenders, and whatever happens will happen. It’s enough.”

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

Wait, that's why you told me not to read interviews, right....oops

I was reading some Good Reads.com reviews and someone posted the news plus a link....oh well, not to worry. I've got the book and will be starting it tonight. The storyline sounds fascinating.

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

Yes, I didn't want you to know. I had heard something about his wife being sick before I read it. Then, a little way in, it hit me that this was to her, and it just stabbed me.

Regardless, it has so much to say. It has stuck with me in so many ways.

I like that they put in books that didn't come out this year, but that impacted their year none the less.

I've got some of their books on my "to be read" list as well.

I read Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle (the Mountain Goats guy) today. It was disturbingly accurate in the way it portrayed that unnamable feeling of melancholy that can sometimes over take a person, and the premise and some of the periphery concepts were really interesting. I'm still processing, but I can think I can safely say I would recommend it, though it disturbed me.
