It was intended to make fun of actors who go for the roles playing the handicapped to get rewards, but it was construed as making fun of the handicapped.
Thanks, that's what I thought. Satire often gets mistaken for deliberate cruelty. We had a similar thing happen here with a satirical comedy TV show called Summerheights High recently. The main character was a school teacher and he was really awful to a special needs student with Down Syndrome (played by a kid who actually had Downs). Some people got outraged, but in reality, the writers were making fun of ""normal" people who are condescending in their attitude, not the disabled themselves.

I had heard about Simple Jack. I heard about the "retard protests" as well.
And yeah, C, that's a good example. I wonder what Lilley's going to come up with next.

I don't know, but whatever it is, I'll be watching. He's in a league of his own in terms of Australian comedians, as far as I am concerned. He's just totally original and quite brilliant at what he does.

I saw it, I didn't like it. I will admit though, I didn't really want to see it, but I got out-voted. However, when we left even the ones who originally wanted to see it didn't like it.

It had a couple moments where I laughed but for the most part I was just thinking, "Oh my god, how is this not over yet? Are they really making this plot stretch for this long?"

I'm definitely going to have to check that one out.

Maybe I'll wait 'till it's at a discount theatre, just in case.

I've heard that Summer Heights High is going to be screening in New Zealand soon. From the clips I've seen on youtube I'm really looking forward to it.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I just re-watched 3:10 To Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

It really is such a great Spaghetti Western....reminds me of some of the old Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood movies from the '60s.

And the kid who plays Bale's son....he's going places.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I watched Soylent Green last night for the first time in a LONG time. The ending is good, but the rest of it is just meandering and classic Charlton Heston overacting, which I love.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I watched Pineapple Express a few days ago. There's a cultural divide here... umm... I felt like the movie wasn't made for me. There were a few funny parts, but it wasn't half as good as Tropic Thunder.

My boyfriend and I are looking forward to the new one starring Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

I want to see that one too. I'm going to try to read the book first.

I wanted to see Burn After Reading this weekend.

Yeah, when I saw Pineapple Express I didn't get the big deal over it too. Like you said a few funny moments, but on the whole a big let down. My sister had been going on & on about how hilarious it was and she went & saw it 3 times the week it came out. Then again, my sister is a big pot head, I am not.

I am planning to go see Burn After Reading tomorrow or Tuesday, I can't wait!

This poster for Zach And Miri Make A Porno was banned in the U.S. (not in Canada, though )

Spoiler:

If you ask me, it's not that bad at all....I only used spoiler tags so it wouldn't slow down the loading of the page.

Trailer for the new Paul Rudd (*insert mandatory swoon*) comedy, Role Models. Looks good and the one advance review I have read seems positive.
Thanks to clewis for sending this to me.

It only got banned because you can see the back of Seth Rogen's and Elizabeth Banks' heads near each other's crotch areas.

I guess the mere hint of oral sex scares the MPAA (U.S. ratings board).

There's a great documentary about movie ratings, and the hardships film makers go through to get their work seen...

It's a great insight into the bullshit that is the MPAA.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I've actually seen that...it is excellent. And quite bizarre in parts. It always astounds me how censors will allow all kinds of really depraved violence to get through (and I am a horror film fan) and yet be so conservative about consentual sex scenes between adults. World is crazy sometimes.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Yeah, it's insane.

I was 16 when Kill Bill Vol.1 came out, and it was rated R (here in Canada, an R is like a NC-17 in the U.S.), anyway, they wouldn't let me buy a ticket, even though I was less than a year away from being of age....I had to get my father to buy me a ticket.

Funny thing was, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was out at the same time, and it was only rated 18A (a milder version of R, where any minor can go, as long as they have a parent or guardian with them).

Even today, movies like Saw and Hostel get 18A, while Knocked Up got the same thing here....ridiculous.
