Great moments in photojournalism...

I don't know if anyone else here has an interest in photojournalism, but anyhow...I'm endlessly fascinated with it and the real stories it tells about the world.

Here are a few of my favourite shots...feel free to share yours, if you have them. Sorry these are all pretty grim. There is plenty of upbeat photojournalism around though, I must just be feeling morbid today.

Steve McCurry

Pieter Hugo specialises in often surreal shots of African street life.

Mali 1975 by Sebastiao Salgado - one of the very best photojournalists in the world. His "The Majority World" series is just brilliant. This shot is deliberately confronting, so don't look if you feel you might be upset.

I thought these shots were pretty amazing. Taken by the official royal ohotographer to the Russian Tsar between 1907 -1915 they must be some of the first colour photographs ever taken. The colours themselves are beautiful.

These are amazing! I can't get over the Leo Tolstoy pic, I got a sketch of it and just bought 4 new canvasses. Leo is getting one.

Two I love from the 2008 World Press Awards.

Brenda Ann Keneally - New York Times Magazine. Used in a story about the working poor. The family pictured have seven children.

Luiz Vasconcelos - Brazil. Taken at the forced eviction of squatters by the military.

Re: Great moments in photojournalism...

It was taken by the famed South African photographer Kevin Carter in the 90's. It won many awards, but other photographers criticized him for not helping the subject's of his photo's and moreso the guilt eventually drove him to suicide. (Not just because of that picture, he'd taken thousands of pictures, mostly of human suffering and death)

The Manic Street Preachers did a song about him, worth a listen.

The Boston Globe always has great photography. Picking months on the Archives drop-down list at the top-right of the page will show you additional galleries.

These are really fabulous - rare colour photographs of American life circa 1939 - 1943.

Re: Great moments in photojournalism...

I love all the colors in these, and I've always been a big fan of those hand-painted signs. Those are great. I know someone (possibly the Library Of Congress) has a giant collection of these type of photos on Flickr. I'll see if I can find the address.

Re: Great moments in photojournalism...

Quote:
With images from southern and central Russia in the news lately due to extensive wildfires, I thought it would be interesting to look back in time with this extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time - when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun. Collected here are a few of the hundreds of color images made available by the Library of Congress, which purchased the original glass plates back in 1948.
