Re: Brian Fallon - Sleepwalkers (February 9th)

What are we feeling on this one, dudes? First few times I heard Painkillers, I was super unimpressed. Turned into one of my most played albums of that year. If you're in the right mind, and, evidently, I was, Brian Fallon's schtick is undeniable.

Feeling very similar after one run through of this one, as well. Wasn't that impressed. A few songs stuck out (Come Wonder With Me, Etta James - anyone else getting a huge Blood Loss vibe from this song?!), but most sounded like not-so-great genre excersises, that weren't really playing to Fallon's strengths (ironically, on an album that couldn't sound MORE Fallon), or advancing his sound/impact in any great way. I feel a very similar way about Brian Fallon as I do about Justin Townes Earle. Both seem stuck in a very distinctive sound, and, with each album, they just add in little flourishes to "change things up" (strings, sax, etc), but, underneath, it's the same thing we've been hearing since American Slang/Midnight At The Movies. Sometimes that's OK, and I often return to these guys for this reason - it's comfortable. You know what you're going to get. Kinda like catching up with an old friend. These guys have both been very upfront with the fact that they're not trying to push boundaries or change the world, etc, but I can't wait for them both to come out and blow me away again like I know they can. Until then, I'll keep buying their albums on release because I actually love the dudes making the songs, regardless of the specific songs on each release.

...I'll probably end playing this one like 68 times this year and love it. Ha.

Also! Didn't mean for this to become a joint thought-piece on Brian and JTE, just so happens that it did.

Re: Brian Fallon - Sleepwalkers (February 9th)

I was the same with Painkillers. Sleepwalkers is like you said a seeming exercise. I think heís a bit caught up in trying to make a record that pays homage to genres he loves while not necessarily nailing it. Etta James and even Forget me Not are songs Iíll go back to but this one doesnít have the allure of anything deeper. Heís been doing Dylan, Waits and U2 covers on the road and is also playing piano now which I enjoy.

The Gaslight reunion shows will bang and I have a feeling they go back to the studio soon. I think thatís where he belongs. Iím cool with side projects I.e Crowes / Zombies but I think he has so many songs left for Gaslight. Also their guitar work was pretty great towards the end. I watch Have Mercy (with Leonard Cohen infusion) live and get chills. I think that could be the tone of their next record. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, I'm hopeful that the Gaslight reunion will give things a kick. I'm actually one of those dudes that found things to dig on Get Hurt (Underneath The Ground is one of my favourite Gaslight/Brian songs fullstop, but 1,000 Years, Get Hurt, Stay Vicious, and Dark Places all get regular plays from me), so yeah, I agree that they were doing some more interesting stuff toward the end there.

On Sleepwalkers, again, I just feel like nearly all of these songs could have been written while... asleep. They're so Brian by the numbers. I dunno. We'll see what happens.

Underneath the ground is great. Get hurt as a whole grew on me after awhile too. Stray paper is a great song IMO. Not sure about execution on the album but thereís a video of him doing it live with a Gretsch and harp which is amazing.

Heís been playing blue jeans, 59 Sound (piano) and Navesink Banks.

Backseats at the Gaslight reunion shows should be so great / nostalgic.
