The sports of yesteryear

The list of discontinued Olympic events throws up some archaic delights

WENLOCK, one of the cyclopean mascots of the London Olympics, takes his name from a town in Shropshire that is the inspiration for the modern games. It was after visiting Much Wenlock, where he observed the annual games run by the Wenlock Olympian Society, that Pierre de Coubertin pursued the idea of reviving the ancient Greek Olympics. The games that followed in Athens in 1896 had just nine sports, covering 43 events, and all the competitors were men. Fast-forward 116 years and London is showing 26 sports comprising 302 events for both men and women. Over the years the roll-call of disciplines has changed substantially, and discontinued men’s events since 1896 outnumber men’s events at the 2012 games by 194 to 163. Below we show a selection of events that have, unsurprisingly, failed to survive the test of time. Live-pigeon shooting, which made its one appearance in the 1900 games, might have been welcomed by some of London’s residents, however.

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics

Quote:
For a sense of how quickly the stench of loserdom can attach to an Olympic champion, it helps to watch not Jordyn Wieber, but her coach, John Geddert. Wieber had great performances in the women's gymnastics team final, but she didn't qualify for the all-around final -- which she was expected to win -- and she placed seventh in floor finals. Geddert seems to like the spotlight -- he has a blog, he tweets, he even blogs about controversy over his tweets. But when Wieber finished her floor routine Tuesday night, Geddert hugged her, then quickly moved out of the camera frame. By the time Wieber's score of 14.6 came up, he was yards behind her. Watch:

Maybe you're thinking that's perfectly natural -- the coach moves out of the frame for the athlete's moment of glory or pain. Maybe it is! But that's not what Geddert did a week ago, while the team was staring up at the scoreboard after the last competitor finished in the team final. The Americans knew Ksenia Afanasyeva's score would not be good enough for the Russian team to overtake them and win gold. As they waited in anticipation, Geddert rushed to join them.

He didn't just rush to join them, he put himself right in the middle of the shot.

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics

American star basketballer Kobe Bryant appears to have inadvertently started a cat fight amongst some sectors of the Australian women's Olympic team.

First, he has been pictured several times with Aussie swimmer Stephanie Rice. The latest photo shows Rice (on his immediate right), Bryant and two other members of the Aussie swim team watching a cycling final together.

The rumours appear to have annoyed Aussie basketballer Liz Cambage who Tweeted :

Quote:
I love how Kobe has his wife with him at the Olympics, yet still surrounded by groupies!!!
She then recommended that "some women need to get a grip".

A tweet war then broke out between various female athletes who probably should have all been doing something more constructive with their time. Drama.

American runner Manteo Mitchell has revealed he ran the last 200m of the Olympic men's 4x400m relay heats earlier today with a broken left leg.

"As soon as I took the first step past the 200m mark, I felt it break." he said.

"I didn't want to let the three guys or the team down, so I just ran on it."

Hard as nails and tough as teak, take a bow Mr Mitchell.

New Zealand just won another gold (in sailing), taking our total to four, which is our best since 1984 when we won 8 golds. Go NZ!

Haha, even I hadn't heard about that and I live there.

But yeah, prostitution has been legal here for a while now. It's great. I get one on the third Friday of every month.

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics

Another gold for New Zealand - five now, for a total of 13 medals, equalling our previous best medal total (Seoul in 1988) - still a couple more chances so we might get our best yet (well total medals anyway, we're not going to top the 8 golds from 1984)

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics

Quote:
Russia’s Mariya Savinova, the reigning women’s world champion in the 800 meters, won the Olympic gold medal on Saturday night. Even so, the Russian got second billing behind the second-place finisher, South Africa’s Caster Semenya. In 2009, Semenya won the world title in the 800 as an 18-year-old. Her reward was being kept out of competition for 11 months while her sport’s governing body investigated her gender. Back on the track, and racing against women, Semenya spent most of tonight’s race at the back of the pack, making her move only in the final 200 meters. It was enough to get her on the podium, but not to win Olympic gold.

After the race, track and field aficionados questioned her tactics. The BBC’s David Ornstein said it appeared that Semenya “had more left in the tank.” His story quoted BBC commentator Kelly Holmes, who won this event in the 2004 Olympics, suggesting that Semenya hadn’t made her best effort: “She looked very strong, she didn't look like she went up a gear, she wasn't grimacing at all. I don't know if her head was in it, when she crossed the line she didn't look affected." Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated senior writer Tim Layden tweeted that Semenya “seemed oddly disengaged most of race and not tired at end.”

In her post-race interview, Semenya said, “The body was not really on fire today.” But the spring in her step at the end of the race—Layden said she “seemed aerobically relaxed two steps past finish line”—led others to speculate that she had pulled a badminton move and tanked the race. Why would someone intentionally perform below their standard in the biggest race in four years? One South African track and field observer suggested that it might be “scandal avoidance”—her 2009 triumph brought such unpleasant consequences that she’d just as soon avoid further scrutiny, and an Olympic silver medal brings considerably less attention than the gold.

This response was predictable. In fact, Sports Illustrated’s David Epstein called it in a piece published days before the final: “If Semenya wins the gold, she is likely to be accused of having an unfair advantage. If she runs poorly, she is likely to be accused of sandbagging the race so as not to be accused of having an unfair advantage.”

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics

Total of six golds for New Zealand now after the gold-medal winner in the shotput was disqualified for drug use, meaning that our Valerie Adams moved from silver up to gold (she has won it before and has been the world champ a few times - the woman who "beat" her threw so much further I wondered if something was iffy about it).

It annoys me when that happens, because the person who deserved the gold medal (and eventually receives it) is deprived of their chance to stand on the top of the podium and hear their national anthem playing. It's not fair.

Dear god. In the most flagrant disregard for the safety and well-being of former sitcom stars and R&B artists from the early 1990s since Celebrity Boxing, Fox has ordered a special called Stars In Danger: High Diving. Which is, yes, celebrity diving. And they acknowledge the danger, right there in the title! I can't tell if that's respectable or makes the whole thing even worse. The show, which will feature eight "celebrities" learning how to dive and then competing, is a one-off type of a thing, so I don't expect we'll see much training. It will mostly be, like, Dalton James hurling himself into a swimming pool from forty feet up in the air. Oh, yeah, they're doing the 10 meter. So basically everyone is going to die and then we'll all be put in jail and TV will be shut down forever and that will be that. It seems a fitting way to go. There are already series like this in Europe that have gone well (I guess you could say swimmingly) so there's a chance everyone will be fine, but this is America. We f-ck things up here. I sense a lot of death in the offing. Maybe they could at least have Tom Daley and Matthew Mitcham tagteam (uh...) host the show to, I dunno, cushion the blow. Anyway, which old TV star do you think will soon be floating face down in a swimming pool, dead as cranberries?

I used to jump off the 10 metre when I was 11 or 12. Not diving though, just jumping and going into the water feet first. Good fun though.
