Re: Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound (6/16)

I was playing it yesterday while I made dinner. Vampires came on. My 7-year-old son paused and listened and then asked me what it was about. I explained and he thought some more and then suddenly just broke down in tears. I got down to his level and hugged him and asked him what was wrong. He told me the song made him very sad. I hugged him some more and told him it was kind of a sad song, but I added how you can tell a really good song when it makes you feel something so strong. We talked it out and he also said he thought about how one day he'd have to go on without me (God willing). I told him that would probably happen - but not for a long time...but that we'd make the most of the years we had together.

Re: Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound (6/16)

In regards to the album...I really like it. Isbell is really on a roll. He's making some of the best music of his generation and he's the one musician I'm constantly trying to get other people to listen to.

On a side note...we took a family trip to Florida the week of the 18th. We drove down from Wisconsin (a little crazy, but it was fun) and I played the heck out of this album as we drove through Tennessee and Georgia (too bad time did not permit a trip through Alabama)!

Wow. What a story, what a thing to have to explain to a kiddo. Nicely done.

so what is it you would like him to do exactly? like, specifically. "change it up" is a little ambiguous.

his last 3 records all sound the same to me. same formula, tempo, etc...
the thing i liked about early ryan adams records is that they were all different explorations into different styles. now ryan has become just as stale as isbell.
i think americana, alt country is in a really dull, boring place right now. most of the bands-musicians are just churning out the same boring shit over and over again.

i got you now. i guess i just find his dynamic lyrical content and the new guitar sound as something different (e.g. could you see anxiety on SE?...no way)but i see your point now man.

i would like to see him switch it up on the next album as well

start experimenting or incorporating other things sonically.

You people are crazy. Isbell is the best songwriter out there right now. Dude is on a roll.

i'm not saying that he isn't a good songwriter, he just seams to be pigeon holing himself in one style, when its obvious he has the talent to branch out and try something a little "crazy" or just "different". unless it's a contractual thing or his record company rejecting other projects we haven't heard

Re: Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound (6/16)

there are certain artists that can put out similar sounding records and still get away with it, in my opinion. john prine being one of them.

Re: Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound (6/16)

Isbell is one of my favorite songwriters, particularly as a lyricist, with his knack for adding unexpected but evocative details. In my estimation, The Nashville Sound has one song I'd set among his top tier--"If We Were Vampires"--and a few others I really enjoy--"Tupelo," "Chaos and Clothes," "Something to Love," and "The Last of My Kind."

I agree with shamooth, though, on the rest. The "rockers"--"Cumberland Gap," "Hope the High Road"--don't especially rock and offer little melodically to make them memorable. I think Isbell is capable of writing a poignant examination of systemic racism and gender and class privilege, but "White Man's World" isn't it. It's ham-fisted and superficial. As for "Molotov" and "Anxiety," I haven't made it all the way through either song and have given up trying.

Overall, I think TNS is a solid album with a few standout tunes, but not phenomenal.

Good stuff here. Talked about changing the chorus of Chaos and Clothes. Also this is a good pod for any musicians or songwriters out there.

Just came to pos that, Freights. Great performance.

With some time Chaos and Clothes has emerged as my favorite on the record. Great performance here.

Re: Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound (6/16)

that tiny desk concert has really unlocked the album for me or vice versa - been listening to it quite a bit today and im really starting to dig the whole thing for once - aside from the white man/white world song - i just cant - far too awkward/clumsy for me

instead of skipping every other song im finally letting it just play and reveal itself to me - molotov is totally working for me at the moment
