Male pill on its way...

There are several reasons why this will not be success. They are all quite obvious.

Scientist's develop male birth control pill

When it comes to birth control, it may finally be the guy's turn.

British scientists are developing a male birth control pill that could put a smile on the faces of a lot of women, according to a report by NBC's Dawn Friesen on "Today" Tuesday. The hormone-free pill, which prevents the ejaculation of sperm, could be on the market in five years.

The pill, a single dose taken a few hours before having sex, affects contraction of the muscles that control ejaculation, but wouldn't interfere with performance or orgasm sensation, researchers at King's College London say. The result is a dry ejaculation.

"It’s not stopping sperm production," Dr. Christopher Smith told NBC News. "It’s not a hormonal method. It's just simply stopping the muscle which takes the sperm along."

The scientists found the solution after noticing that drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia and high blood pressure were effective at preventing ejaculation, according to a report in the British newspaper "The Guardian Unlimited."

The pill would be more user-friendly than other male contraceptive methods such as vasectomy, injections or implants, researchers told NBC.

"Within half a day, the sperm is on the move again," says Smith.

If the pill passes clinical trial, it could be a significant benefit for people who are anxious about long-term effects of hormones.

Indeed. Not to mention that no female in her right mind would trust them to actually remember to take it.

Scientific Advances on Contraceptive for Men

...

Then Mr. Owens volunteered to test potential methods that lowered his sperm count so much that “I was not viably able to produce a child,” he said. His count rebounded weeks after stopping each method, and he fathered a daughter between research studies.

“I would definitely do some kind of long-term male contraceptive,” said Mr. Owens, a 39-year-old school social worker from Seattle.

Male contraceptives are attracting growing interest from scientists, who believe they hold promise for being safe, effective and, also important, reversible.

“We have a number of irons in the fire,” said Diana L. Blithe, program director for contraceptive development for the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. “I think men actually do want to do this.

...

The most studied approach in the United States uses testosterone and progestin hormones, which send the body signals to stop producing sperm. While effective and safe for most men, they have not worked for everyone, and questions about side effects remain.

So scientists are also testing other ways of interrupting sperm production, maturation or mobility.

One potential male birth control pill, gamendazole, derived from an anticancer drug, interrupts sperm maturation so “you’re making nonfunctional sperm,” said Gregory S. Kopf, associate vice chancellor for research administration at the University of Kansas Medical Center. The center has begun discussions with the Food and Drug Administration about the drug, already tested in rats and monkeys.

...

Elaine Lissner, director of the Male Contraception Information Project, formed a foundation to develop other approaches. One, “reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance,” or Risug, involves injecting gel into the scrotum to inactivate sperm. Another involves briefly heating the testes with ultrasound, which can halt sperm production for months, she said.

“I can imagine a world where you take your car in every six months to get your oil changed and go next door and get your ultrasound for 50 bucks,” she said.

American scientists will remain skeptical unless research shows Risug is reversible, or ultrasound effective.

Re: Male pill on its way...

My partner, Tim, is currently involved in a study like this since last September. It's not a pill, it's an injection. The side effects have been few and barely noticeable (affecting his mood and skin). But it works. I haven't fallen pregnant.

They recently called off the study and have ceased administering the injection because one test subject had experienced adverse effects that I guess were unbearable. My partner used to go in every 2 months for an injection, but now has to go in every 4 weeks for them to get a sample and track his sperm count. I've had to go in once or twice to get a pregnancy test and fill out forms.

The porn they have in the little room for giving sperm samples is HILARIOUS.

How Do They Run Clinical Trials for Birth Control?
Aren't the subjects afraid of getting pregnant?
By Maura Kelly
Posted Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at 2:56 PM ET

Do they only choose couples who want to get pregnant?
A clinical trial of a male contraceptive has been canceled, researchers announced Monday, after the drug was shown to induce serious side effects in 10 percent of the men who used it. Wait, how are subjects chosen for clinical trials of contraceptives? Aren't they worried about getting pregnant?

They're willing to take their chances. Scientists look for healthy, fertile, sexually active subjects who don't want to get pregnant or impregnate anyone, but understand there's a risk of conceiving. Most modern contraceptive trials involve several phases: In the early going, researchers try to evaluate the basic safety of their drugs, and the extent to which they can lower a man's sperm count or inhibit a woman's ovulation; later on, they measure the drug's real-world efficacy at preventing unwanted pregnancies.

In the early phases of testing, volunteers take the experimental drug while using other forms of contraception, like condoms or diaphragms. For later tests, participants are asked to forgo these backup methods, and are instructed to consider the attendant risks. (In the case of male contraceptives, researchers look for men in committed relationships who can discuss the risks with their partners.) In any case, researchers are pretty confident, at this point, that the new drug works about as well as other products in common use; they're just trying to compute its precise rate of efficacy, along with its ease of use and the extent of its side effects.

Still, why would anyone take their chances with an experimental contraceptive? Some may be motivated by a desire to help develop new drugs. That's often the case in trials of male pills and injections, as many subjects believe that men should bear some of the burden for birth control. Male subjects may also be dating women who can't use other forms of contraception. As for women, the motivations are free health care and free birth control. And there's always the allure of cold, hard cash: Participants in these trials can earn a decent amount of moneyŚmaybe $1,000 or more, depending on the exact details of the experiment.

At least no one has to worry about getting a placebo. As a general rule, contraceptive trials test a new treatment only against itself. There's no need for a control group, since researchers know how individuals would fare with standard methods, or without any "treatment" at all. (About 85 percent of couples using no form of contraception get pregnant within a year.)

Male birth control injection fails
Sapa-dpa | 01 August, 2011 12:30

An international trial of a male birth control injection has failed due to its serious side effects, the professors overseeing the German implementation of the test announced Monday.

The trial, conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and CONRAD, a non-profit organization aimed at improving reproductive health, began late 2009 and involved 400 people in eight countries.

"The study was ended in March, because the injection does not work in its current composition," said Michael Zitzmann of the University of Muenster, in northern Germany.

One in ten men experienced side-effects including depression, weight gain, increased libido and acne. The older the trial person, the worse the symptoms were. These side-effects had not emerged in earlier national tests of the drug.

"It worked for 90 per cent of the men, but a 10-per-cent (failure), that is simply too much," Zitzmann said.

The trial involved men aged 18 to 45, including around 100 in Germany, living in a long-term partnership with women who had also agreed to the study.

"The expectations were not met," said Hermann Behre of the University Clinic in Halle, eastern Germany. The complete trial results are due to be presented in October, he said.

"But we can already assume that it will not work in this form," Bahre added.

Every eight weeks the men were given a testosterone injection, consisting of drugs that are already used to treat other conditions.

The injections stopped the men from producing testosterone, with the consequence that they also stopped making sperm.

"We need to start from scratch, the result is open," said Zitzmann. He did not think that a male contraceptive injection would be marketable in the next five years.

The pharmaceuticals industry has shown similar scepticism. A research project into male hormone injections by Schering, which first marketed the female contraceptive pill, was ended when they were taken over by Bayer in 2007.

"In the next 10 to 15 years there are no market opportunities for this," said Friederike Lorenzen of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals in Berlin.

The German association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies VFA says their 43 members are not investigating male contraceptives.

Nevertheless, Behre said success for male contraceptive injections was closer than many thought.

"In China, this kind of testosterone injection was tested successfully on more than 1,000 men. We have had the results since 2009," he said.

Male contraceptives were not aimed at replacing the female pill, Behre added. Rather, they would enable couples to share the responsibility of birth control.

Well, there you go.

We were definitely of the group that desires to help develop new drugs. Funnily enough, I experience all the side effects on the pill that they've just described in the male injection, and the pill has been on the market for decades.

Free-sperm donor told to stop

A California man who has fathered 14 children by donating his sperm for free has been told to stop or face a $100,000 fine.

Trent Arsenault, of Freemont, has been giving away his sperm to couples and single women he meets online since 2006, according to his donation website trentdonor.org.

"It only takes me 15 minutes to do my part," Arsenault, 36, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They'll send me a text message, and by the time they get to my house, it's hot off the press."

The engineer with Hewlett-Packard has given away 348 vials of sperm to nearly 50 women, and three women were impregnated last month.

Federal regulations, however, say sperm donors must get tested for diseases at least a week before every donation.

He could face a $100,000 fine or a year in prison if he broke the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations.

Re: Male pill on its way...

I read that story in Newsweek, I think it was, at the dentist. That little story makes Mr. Arsenault look like a creeptastic master-baiter. According to the story I read, he is really responsible about health practices, he's actually a virgin, and he stays in contact with the children he's fathered if the parents want him to. Much of what he does is for lesbian couples, because going through sperm banks can be very costly, and anonymous. Apparently some of the families like that he has relationships with those children.
